SSV: How do you feel about baristas that call themselves “honorary shifts” or say remarks like “I’m almost a shift, so…”(self.starbucksbaristas)

At my store we joke that some partners are shifts and they said “no I don’t want it.” No one has ever said it themselves it’s always appointed

i think it’s so annoying and it’s just honestly frustrating. there’s this girl i work with who likes to act like the shift and it’s just a power trip for her.
one thing she did was tell me to make some backup tea and then she refuses to help this new girl at bar when it was getting a little backed up and there was only the three of us and she was just standing around (the shift was in the back). so i started helping on bar a little and then she kept giving me tasks like the tea and i was waiting for the tea to finish brewing so i helped out on bar and one singular customer walked up to the register and she immediately says “you have a customer” as she’s just standing right in front of the register doing absolutely nothing.
she’d also get mad at me for getting any drip coffee for customers, even though the coffee is directly behind the register and some customers don’t move until you grab them their coffee, esp if it’s just a black pike, blonde, or dark.
and it’s so annoying because the shift that day lets her do whatever she wants and doesn’t care that she acts like a total ass whenever it’s her as the barista who’s been there longer than others. it’s just an excuse for her dumb power trips🙄

Very interesting .. sounds like exactly somebody I work with.. just in case I’m the shift you’re referring to please come to me and we can talk . Let me know what state/province you work in , in case I can rule it out .
If I’m wrong and it’s not the same barista I’m thinking of, talk to your shift. It’s not okay!

My old shift supervisor used to call me an "honorary shift" and make me do a bunch of his work for him. I've never heard anyone call themselves that before.

it’s only annoying when they’re not actively helpful. a lot of shifts quit at my store recently so myself and a few others have stepped up and are going through the process of being shifts (which i’m getting interviewed for soon so wish me luck!!)— mostly just helping run breaks. like, i feel like i can say i am an honorary shift. it’s really annoying to me when someone who isn’t helpful or is generally just a bad team player says they’re an honorary shift. we have one person in particular that will say stuff like that then refuse to clean bathrooms. 😩

Brah. I had a barista almost take the shift keys home and say “well I can have them in my pocket because I’m an honorary barista!” My other shift turned around and said “actually. Baristas aren’t even supposed to touch those keys sooooo…” I just smiled lmao

I ignore them 🤷♀️

I think those people think they do a lot more work than they actually do

Can agree. We had no customers during a restock and they asked me to restock them while they were on their phone. I looked at them and said “Actually I’m moving product around, can you restock your green bean?” Lol

I think the people that designate themselves as an “honorary shift”/“basically a shift” can be 🥴 but I’ve had all of my shifts tell me that because that’s just where I am in my development - I’m just not wanting to leave my store right now
I stay in my lane day to day, but when there are opportunities to I step up and may make a suggestion on a play or task someone. But I don’t use it as an excuse to do things like take over the floor or get out of doing tasks or anything
Just because of the way I carry myself throughout the day coaching and being helpful I’ve had many a green bean think I was a shift and ask me things like to sign their Covid check in or tell them where to go on the floor 🤣

ew ew ew. they always take their job WAAAAAY more seriously than my shifts ever did. which is probably why they weren’t a shift. because everybody hated their micromanaging

I have a partner like this they think they know everything about Starbucks even though they have only been there for a month or two. And they were a regular before getting hired. So they think they know everything Starbucks. They even tried to tell my shift how to do there job. And my shift told them to stay in their lane. And they tried flirting with the same shifts boyfriend in front of them

These are people that like to to be "in charge", but have no idea how to be a leader people will follow.

No one at my store says this...the closest I've heard is "I'm trying to be a shift"
