hello hello! i am going to be transferring come August since i will be going back to college, and need to find a store to transfer to. i currently work in a store with a drive thru located off a highway exit which is one of the busiest locations in my state, and it sometimes can be a bit too much for me because i have anxiety and struggle a bit when i have DT, cafe, mobile and delivery orders. i was wondering if working at a cafe only store is less stressful at all or if there are any major differences? the closest store to my dorm is cafe only but i’m unsure how different things will be. TIA :)

Just to provide a different opinion, I work in a cafe with no DT and it is extremely chill. Like yeah we get busy, but we also have times where it’s straight up dead. It’s great and I love it and I don’t have to wear a headset or have people yelling indecipherable things in my ear hahha
I think the main thing is just how busy the location is. We have a high incident rate and a few sketchy folks, but I don’t think in the few weeks I’ve been here that our line has gone through the door. And that includes Canada Day!
However, if the cafe store is on campus, it may be very busy. But it might just be less stressful because there’s only two ways to order, and less stimuli. Good luck!

our drive thru was shut down for maintenance and we were cafe only for one of my shifts and it got pretty busy inside. I will say personally it felt very emotionally draining. i never really thought about how talking through a headset to someone who can’t see me really felt like nothing as opposed to the person being right there in front of me yk? that’s just me personally though!

I've worked at a DT and transferred to a cafe only on a college campus. In my experience, the cafe only was more stressful in some ways (it was much higher volume than the DT store I worked at, massive rushes between class times) but less in others (no headsets, you don't have to worry about window times). It also depends on what time you normally work, mornings when everyone is heading to class are typically much busier than the afternoons and nights at my store, so I normally found working nights much less stressful.
The first couple weeks might be a bit rough compared to what the store would normally be like too, my campus store got a bunch of transfers around the same time and had a lot of new people when I transferred in, so we were all kind of adjusting to the store at the same time.

which one do you prefer most? DT or cafe only? i appreciate the help!

I prefer DT, but that's mostly because of the student body on my campus, lol. In my experience people have been nicer and tip better at drive through stores, but a lot of the customers at my cafe only store are a lot more impatient/don't tip at all. There was also a massive training problem at my cafe store, which wasn't great for me as one of the more experienced baristas. I also really like the rush/stress of peak, and it wasn't really the same at the cafe store.
Being close to all of my classes/my friends/etc. was really nice though. A lot of my problems with the cafe stores on my campus are things that would vary from store to store, so I can definitely see how a cafe only with better management might be better.
