Please. Help me. This is disgusting.
Old staff fired. All recent hires.

Oh boy. There should be training materials/step by step instructions on the iPads. Can’t tell you exactly where to find them, cuz I’m not at work right now.
But basically the machines should be fully emptied and de-scaled once a month. And once a week, they should be fully emptied and have sanitizer solution run through them. Daily, they just need to be wiped with a sani towel (the bottom edge of the black panel the ice falls onto).

I haven’t done it in a while but that sounds about right from what I remember. I used to be the designated clean play shift and would always do the ice machine myself because no one ever actually did it right and it would get disgusting!
Bhaisaab869 points1y ago
Up until about three weeks ago, I had done every single clean play since clean plays first started. I was always the one to do the ice machine lol. Now I’m working mornings and don’t have to do another clean play.
Not_Another_Karen [OP]9 points1y ago
We are a licensed store, so there is no iPad to look up and our paper book doesn't say how to clean.
Thank you so much.
Bhaisaab8610 points1y ago
I’ll look it up in the morning and post the full cleaning procedures for the ice machine tomorrow :)

I came from licensed. There should be a website you can log onto, you might have to get the password from your manager mine had hers saved, but on the website there is a search engine in the top right corner and you can literally find anything there. It was my go to. You can type in ice machine and then under clean safe and ready it will detail how to clean it. I used it all the time to fix the espresso machines and pumps and whatever else

Hi love. You should still have access to the parnet hub resources for log in. Please ask you SM or whoever the manager is for the login it it will have all guides for cleaning equipment including icemakers. Otherwise you can Google the model name and number and find a manual online usually that can be downloaded.
Not_Another_Karen [OP]2 points1y ago
Oh, wow! I did not realize we could access the partners hub as a licensed store. Good to know, thank you!

Lmao my store just waits for it to break down and let the technician handle it. I work at a licensed store and they only give us 45 minutes for 1 person after closing to do basic cleaning. Never have enough time to get to do more advanced cleaning or maintenance. Took us over a year to get to cleaning the bean hopper on our espresso machine, we only have one machine and can't empty lt for cleaning.
Not_Another_Karen [OP]6 points1y ago
We get 15 minutes to "close" after closing at 7. So, we follow certain tasks throughout the day to make sure the last thing we do at 7 is final dishes and a trash run.
We have been doing our more advanced cleaning throughout the day. If two people are on, one deep cleans while the other handles till and drinks.
The hopper, we clean once a week but it just means we stop selling espresso ten or fifteen minutes before close just to get it done. Creates a bit of inconvenience but we take pride in being clean.
Edit: if you want tips on daily tasks feel free to pm me. Not sure how well it would work for your store but might help!

Licensed store leader here!!!
#1 the switch to turn ur off is located under the front panel. You’ll have to screw it off or you might have an obvious button to push without screwing off the panel. #2 empty it out! Scoop that ice out and dump it in the sinks and run hot water. #3 take your delimer bottle (fill it with one packet of delimer solution and then fill with lukewarm water to top and shake!) spray the entire machine and wait 10 minutes to scrub. #3 after scrubbed with delimer, spray down with water. #4 spray sanitizer solution and let sit for another 10 minutes. #5 I usually rinse water again at the end, but it’s not an actual step, but I do it just in case. #6 start your machine back up! Make sure you filled your front of store ice bin before running cleaning cycle too!!!

In the same situation Noone in our store knows how to do it and it's been atleast a year I feel bad for our customers.
jackmalfoy6 points1y ago
How do I convince my manager to let us do this? We thought we had the time yesterday but they told us specifically not to because they’re worried about “the amount of ice to fill up” for morning crew.
Not_Another_Karen [OP]8 points1y ago
It fills up relatively fast, I'd say if you had completely finished by end of the night, there should be enough for the morning and it will continually fill throughout the day.
Cleaning ice machines should be a regular thing and are supposed to be. Bacteria and mold from the ice are no joke.
I often don't ask when it comes to cleaning in the slow time of the day, I take initiative and do it as long as I know a task can be completed in the day. May not necessarily work for you, in this instance but do warn them of the possible risks of mold in ice. As well as if a health inspector saw a machine like this...
If it isn't able to fit your crew's schedules, they should be bringing in a professional to do regular servicing and cleanings.

For me, I would fully stock the ice bins in the evening and then do the cleaning. Overnight, the ice machine would fill to about half way, and since morning drinks didn't tend to need that much ice, there was still plenty to go around.
We did have an upgraded ice machine which was designed for higher volumes, but as long as the ice bins are fully stocked, you should be fine.

we do ours doing clean play
wizardsticker4 points1y ago
You can also call in your ice machine to facilities if it’s really bad to have someone clean it during the day! Our old one was really nasty and we could never get the pink stuff out all the way 🤢, they did a way better job than we ever could!
Not_Another_Karen [OP]3 points1y ago
"Pink stuff" is bacteria rapidly growing. It's disgusting.

Try this if you can't find another way to access a manual: side panel manuals.
If you disassemble the ice machine, there should be side panels that can come off. They are protected from water, and hopefully build up. Our machine had a typed cleaning manual attached/taped to the inside of the removable panel (left side). It came with the ice machine. Try there.
Additionally, if you are a barista who knows how to clean your store's ice machine, consider making a manual yourself! Slap it on the side panel or outside of the machine! So green beans (and you!) don't have to stress over finding the EXACT ice machine model in Store Resources and then deciphering the app's ancient tomes to figure out how to clean the dang thing :)
Not_Another_Karen [OP]3 points1y ago
Thank you! Will take a peak tomorrow. I do know they come apart fairly easily.
I have "manuals" and "guides" all over our kiosk now so we all follow the same standard and level of cleaning for consistency, especially for new hires.
We do have someone coming in from another store to give the two of us a run down of how to properly clean.
Spookybabette3 points1y ago
Hi! If this is the iceomatic that has the blue power and cleaning button with the white ice curtains (ie the newer one) I can try and send you the instructions I use! The problem I have with the iPad instructions is it doesn’t explain the cycles you have to put it through or how to do it (at least when I first started cleanplay)
Spookybabette1 points1y ago
I can’t post images here lol but if you google iceomatic ice machine cleaning manual it should be the first link that pops ups that’s titled Cleaning-CIM.pdf - Ice-o-matic and it should have pictures in there and it explains how to initiate the harvest cycles and stuff
For the sludge I’d just use a sani towel and a hot towel and pray
bre_kiser2 points1y ago
We just went through this at my store I basically climbed inside that bitch and had to clean it for 30 minutes then run the cleaning cycle. After showing my manager we figured out the machine hadn’t been cleaned properly in like 3 months so now we do it on clean plays every Monday
Not_Another_Karen [OP]2 points1y ago
Yeah, I asked another store member. The old team used to do it once a year.... so, we are doing it every two weeks now.
galaxydisco171 points1y ago
The only person in my kiosk that knows is my manager, but he rarely does it due to how understaffed we are.
