Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Full History - 2022 - 07 - 05 - ID#vs56aq

Dear Customers of Starbucks (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by astrenixie
Please, please, if you have any care for Starbucks employees, boycott Tuesdays in July. We are underscheduled and understaffed ON PURPOSE. They are setting us up to fail ON PURPOSE.

We are being overworked while not getting enough hours to feed ourselves. I have coworkers who struggle to feed their kids. I have coworkers who can't afford rent. All of this so that people quit.

All of this to do their hardest to go back on their promise of paying us what isn't even a living wage anymore. They can spare the 50% off to make our shifts living hell, but they refuse to give us what we are owed. It is the baristas who make your drinks, not the people sitting in corporate who are happy to watch their store employees struggle to survive.

Literally almost cried today bc of this promo. How am I supposed to run a fully functioning floor on the busiest of summer days in a high volume dt location with 3 people.
astrenixie [OP] 110 points 1y ago
You aren't. We had enough people today for a regular shift, but this promo had us all stressed and scrambling to play catch up. The shift called to ask if we could call another person in, and we were denied on basis of not enough available hours to give. We finally got a coworker to come in an hour early, but it was moot at that point. At least I got a pity tip from a nice lady, cause I DID cry on the floor. And then corporate wonders why people are fighting back, smh.
Mea-fae_Owl73 30 points 1y ago
My store was lucky today. I walked up to my SMs and asked them to get us some help as there was no way we were staffed for this. They called in someone early and we were able to give someone a lunch and have them stay a couple of more hours. It may not be “happy hour busy” but it was busier than they anticipated for.
Assiqtaq 29 points 1y ago
If they are going to understaff you, then you guys really should just slow down. Obviously it is not a priority for them, why are you acting like it is a priority for you? It isn't like any part of the profit goes into your pocket.
astrenixie [OP] 25 points 1y ago
I absolutely agree, but it would have to be a store wide effort, and many of my coworkers don't think that way. The only reason I still put effort in is for my coworkers.
Assiqtaq 3 points 1y ago
Same.
MochaSlanger 13 points 1y ago
Yes but nobody likes being harassed by upset customers…so people are forced to choose between personal comfort and often times personal safety because some customers are unpredictable!
Assiqtaq 2 points 1y ago
Well this is certainly true.
turpentinetears 13 points 1y ago
Our exact situation today with a call off and a trainee who got thrown in the deep end
kirieiji 9 points 1y ago
Same here.. the mid shift left 4 hours early so I had to take over and we were doing a 3 person play. I tried to ask my SM if I could ask someone else to come in and help and she said "No :) we need to cut back on labour anyways"
cancermooncrybaby5 2 points 1y ago
Me and 3 of my baristas cried yesterday. On top of this promo we had a shift meeting that required me to be off the floor for an hour and a half during our afternoon rush. We were never able to catch up, it was the worst close I think I’ve ever run. I just kept apologizing profusely to my partners because of course it felt like my fault and i felt terrible that they felt so stressed and overwhelmed

I work for a licensed location (for a company that pays me substantially more with more benefits and the encouragement to (politely-ish, of course) stand up for myself and my coworkers when it comes to verbally abusive assholes). Telling customers (esp in the wake of issues corporate employees are experiencing) that we cannot honor their coupons gives me an odd sense of joy.

I worked corporate for two years. Low wages, toxic corporate structure, and the lack of something as basic as BEING ABLE TO TIP VIA CREDIT/DEBIT (it makes hundreds of dollars of difference most weeks) has made it so I’ll never work for corporate again.

I never thought I’d be so happy working for something licensed.

I’m standing with y’all. You deserve so much better. I know the shit you put up with for such low wages/benefits. YOU DESERVE BETTER!! ❤️
astrenixie [OP] 24 points 1y ago
Thank you so much for your support. I have to say, working two whole years here sounds impossible to me, so much respect to you! I'm glad you're happier. I used to want a career with this company until I saw the poor treatment and lack of support. Having each other's backs right now is so important, and I could never get through a shift without kind customers and awesome coworkers. 💚
captmarksparrow 16 points 1y ago
283 here. It’ll be 3 years in October. I’m at my wits end lmao 😵‍💫
astrenixie [OP] 16 points 1y ago
Congratulations for hanging on so long! I hope you find new and better opportunities soon! Nobody deserves this craziness.
dkr1829 7 points 1y ago
285 here dying in TX, fighting everyday over the thought of keep working this job or quit or just literally kms on camera ☠️☠️ My 3yrs will be the coming January but I just got my 2nd anniversary pin 2 days ago 🥲
ExpensiveSchedule229 45 points 1y ago
Wait the 50% off code is all Tuesday for the entire month?? Oh hellll no
trmbnplyr1993 15 points 1y ago
At least it's 1 day a week. And only 1 drink is 50% off. I'd hate to see it being 50% off all cold drinks.
zshadowhunter 3 points 1y ago
Be glad you missed frappyhour then....or the spark drinks, unicorn day was a special hell.
thechamelioncircuit 43 points 1y ago
The only reason we didn’t die today was because we didn’t have Mango OR Pineapple
astrenixie [OP] 26 points 1y ago
I really don't get why people are so into the pineapple drinks. They don't even taste very pineapple-y.
thechamelioncircuit 3 points 1y ago
I actually found out that I’m allergic to pineapple via the refresher lmao. I chugged a venti and went into anaphylaxis
astrenixie [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Holy f*ck, I am SO glad you're okay! Anaphylaxis is so scary. At least you know now so you can avoid pineapple!
thechamelioncircuit 3 points 1y ago
Thanks! It was only mild thankfully! That’s why I carry be adryl
FrustratingBears 3 points 1y ago
my allergic reaction wasn’t that bad (just had a tingly mouth) but i ALSO found out i’m semi-allergic to pineapple from these 😭🤘
marketelasticity 19 points 1y ago
I didn't know this was the play I wondered why management was all sat at a table having a meeting while myself and another new hire ran the whole place with an angry shift.

I almost fucking cried this is evil
Necessary_Low939 18 points 1y ago
I didn’t know they were doing this. And thank goodness I don’t work Tuesday
ellensaige 16 points 1y ago
I woke up this morning throwing up and couldn't go to work and I felt so bad leaving my coworkers yet another person down. I was the precloser and I can't imagine how bad it was without me.
astrenixie [OP] 15 points 1y ago
Hey, if you are sick, it's better to stay home. As much as it sucks to be down a person, that isn't on you. It's on corporate for underscheduling. One person calling out should not jeopardize a shift. I hope you feel better soon. 💚
ellensaige 7 points 1y ago
it also sucks cause my manager made me text people trying to find coverage. I should've said no but I was super out of it so I just said yes and texted everyone I could think of. my manager is literally incompetent though and doesn't ever do his job so I don't know what I expected.
astrenixie [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Oof, I'm sorry about that. My manager is nice but doesn't know a lot of stuff, and he just got off paternity leave but is now taking vacation. Management is such an issue just about everywhere, I swear.
ellensaige 5 points 1y ago
It's so bad. He only works mornings and has never once done the food pull. He doesn't have someone else do it, just doesn't do it at all. it often doesn't get started until 12 or later when he gets off and someone else gets keys. same with the midday money count, it sometimes doesn't get done until 4 or 5. I don't know what I can do as a batista because I can't tell him to get it together and do his job.
Alarming_Base3148 3 points 1y ago
Per employee handbook, your only responsibility is to report your emergency absence. It is SM or ASM responsibility to cover it, so you know next time.

If it's not an emergency (family suddenly in town) then it's on the partner.
Assiqtaq 12 points 1y ago
I don't work in a standalone, I work in a licensed store. A kiosk in a grocery store. I got asked today twice about this Tuesday thing, I had not heard a single thing about it before. First lady was cool, she just said oh well and paid for her drink. Second lady, who of course was there 20 minutes before close, got pissed off. Told me "Never mind then. You'd think they'd put up a sign if they aren't going to do it!" I'm like, put up a sign they aren't? They barely tell us when we ARE going to participate, you think they care enough to actually send signs for when we aren't?
astrenixie [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Oh, my gosh, YES. I hate when customers expect us to have any authority over stuff. We are barely given any information. I had no idea this was happening until last night because the shift I closed with keeps up to date on things like that.

No joke, a lady argued with one of my shifts and wanted to call corporate because our "signs didn't show the right price." Like, first off, I told her the price when she ordered. Second, we can't change the menus unless we get the materials for it, and the prices have been rising because inflation. I feel like some customers just have zero idea on how corporations work.
Tvdrone16 10 points 1y ago
I changed my availability the second I saw this on partner hub, Starbucks ain't gonna beat me down like that a month before the raise kicks in.
astrenixie [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I wish I had known sooner! I would have done the same. In fact, I would have loved to organize with everyone so all of us had Tuesdays off in protest. But we found out after schedules were made, which I think was purposeful.
havii_90 10 points 1y ago
So I didn’t even know the coupon existed. Tuesdays were my usual during the school year of buying coffee between work and practice. I’ve been skipping a lot of Tuesdays this summer and now I think I’ll continue to do so
astrenixie [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Thank you for the solidarity! It is very appreciated.
North-Nectarine9138 7 points 1y ago
3 callouts, no repleacements, I’m the shift lead closing with a new barista… We got out 2 hours after close- and we closed early….. I’m so spent….😫
astrenixie [OP] 2 points 1y ago
That sucks so much, but, hey, congrats for making it out! You were stuck late, but you got it done, and it's awesome that you stayed to close. I know some shifts who would leave on time with key things undone. You deserve a long rest and some selfcare!
AdBoring6672 7 points 1y ago
263 that recently got the fuck out of there. Good luck to the rest of y’all ❤️
UsualRefrigerator211 7 points 1y ago
I was on hot bar alone doing cafe, mobiles, and drive thru plus helping the one person on cold bar. And we had a new person on window and a new person up front no help whatsoever and it was just awful bc of this promo. It’s usually chill on tuesdays so the staff is fine but today was a fucking nightmare
astrenixie [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Oh, absolutely. Cars were wrapped around the building at our store all morning and until like...sometime around 3, I think? And we had so many mobiles.

A lady walked in while around seven people were waiting on mobiles or cafe orders, and she asked if she could have a refund if it took a while for her drink to be made. She left without ordering, thank goodness.
UsualRefrigerator211 4 points 1y ago
omg glad she left. We had several refunds in the cafe today because someone did a 17 item order (all cold bar) and it took us forever
Lukesnowwalker 6 points 1y ago
My store was so understaffed during the winter even after telling them multiple times that i needed to be out for school they kept promising me that they were hiring new people and to just hold on “just one more week”. come to find out they never even opened positions online. they had no intention of hiring anyone 🙃 needless to say i warned my coworkers i was leaving and put in my two weeks. as long as the bucks has one employee they’ll work them into the ground. unfortunately they won’t learn until the stores have to close from no staff 😵‍💫
ringronies 5 points 1y ago
Both sad and reassuring to see that my store wasn’t the only one struggling hardcore. Today was a nightmare. I have never wanted to walk out before, but today I heavily considered it. If I’m going to be this insanely stressed at work, at least give me enough hours/compensation to make it worth it. Jesus, today was bad.
foreveratome 5 points 1y ago
We had clean play tonight and we’re doing closing tasks until 11. Never got to make any back ups, barely got to do any cleaning tasks. After my shift I wanted to just sit in my car and cry. This promo is horrible. Our lines both in cafe and drive were so bad that not even shutting off mobile orders helped.
ConfusedFey 5 points 1y ago
I was wondering why the heck I was scheduled to close with one other person on a TUESDAY. I've closed every shift I've had for the last year and never has it only been two people an hour before close on a week day. Can you inform me more as to what is going on?
astrenixie [OP] 15 points 1y ago
So, from what I have seen and been told, Starbucks tends to underschedule during summer anyways. However, in response to workers organizing and in attempts to pay less when the raise comes, they have been cutting hours, particularly in every store located in a "union-risk" area. It is a tactic many businesses use to get people to quit to avoid paying unemployment, as the majority of unemployment in the US is paid by employers. The more people quit, the fewer people will receive the bonus pay for being with the company a longer amount of time. It is also a common strategy in the US for employers to hire as many employees working under the benefit-elligible hours as possible to cut corners. In short, it is easier to mistreat current employees to get them to leave and then replace them with people who will be "cheaper" to keep on.

Some stores that were previously compliant unionized because of these awful tactics, but many stores still remain un-unionized because people are scared of losing a job that provides benefits and where you will not be fired for being queer.

I would like to clarify that these hour cuts are from corporate, and store managers can get in trouble for giving out more hours.
ConfusedFey 3 points 1y ago
Checks out
ringronies 1 points 1y ago
Where can I get more information on this whole situation? Where are you able to learn all this?
astrenixie [OP] 6 points 1y ago
I've learned a lot speaking with shifts and managers and keeping up with what people are seeing in their stores online. It's hard to find things explicitly stated, because Starbucks likes to pretend they are treating us well, hence the push to not "look like we are begging for tips." But many of the intercompany announcements and communications clearly show a push for union busting and a lack of regard for partners. As for the hours, I see that firsthand, and they pushed the raise to the latest month possible all while making conditions worse for us.
[deleted] 4 points 1y ago
post this to r/starbucks too. it’s gonna get a lot more traction there bc more customers are active there
astrenixie [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Will do! Also, if anyone wants to cross post this, I am fine with that. :)
c-3le 4 points 1y ago
i usually work tuesdays and i wasn’t scheduled today and usually tuesdays aren’t rough at our store despite being one of the high volume dt location in the area so we do cleanplays on tuesday. it’s usually slow and steady after 4 on tuesdays so i decided to stop by and say hi to everyone and as i entered i felt like i’m entering hell. the crowd was a little bit less than cars and coffee but still crowded, everyone was running here and there i wished i could jump in to help but couldn’t afford getting anyone else in trouble. i really hope they had a good shift and a clean play tonight.
astrenixie [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Oh, geez, I feel that. I had a mid shift today, and it was terrible, so I was definitely ready to leave. But I felt bad for my coworkers who were still dealing with off and on rushes of customers wanting a cheaper drink. Our cleanplay was also tonight, and it was probably a good thing, because we could only get so much done before it was time for me to leave. I stayed an hour past my shift's end talking to the clean players who were waiting for their shifts to start in the lobby, and breakdown was not finished by the time I left. I hope they did okay.
anonbaristaandstuff 3 points 1y ago
I’m at a licensed store so we don’t do this promotion and the amount of people acting like it’s personally my fault they can’t get their dumbass frappuccino half off
Minute-General-2090 3 points 1y ago
I 100% know you corporate workers need more. As much headache working in a license store, it doesn't amount to what you guys have to deal with and we get leeway with some if not, most things that corporate would put a boot to.
mhgl 3 points 1y ago
If you’re going to ask for customers to boycott can you provide useful information as to why?

I think I’m gathering there’s a sale on Tuesdays that you aren’t receiving extra staff for or the store is pulling employees on Tuesday to save labor?
LOUD_AS_FUCK -2 points 1y ago
If we ask, that’s reason enough.
mhgl 3 points 1y ago
> If we ask, that’s reason enough.

As a customer, I assure you it isn’t. I don’t know you or your level of rationality which is why an explanation of the ask would be appreciated.
Good_Pay_4439 3 points 1y ago
I can understand why you ask for the information you did and want to politely and respectfully direct you to the many responses in this post as to why. While only one poster may have floated the idea of a boycott there are several responses from baristas throughout the company stating we are getting our hours cut (disproportionately) and cannot afford basic necessities. Additionally we are understaffed, information is not communicated to the partners who need it most, more often than not we are scheduled outside our availability (at least in my store) and we rarely have the ingredients required to make the items being advertised.

For example: many of us did not know about the Tuesyay promotion being every Tuesday of this month. This was not communicated in multiple locations.
astrenixie [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I was going to reply along a similar vein, but this sums it up. I already stated why. And the comments back it up. To need more information other than the fact employees are being mistreated is wild to me. Thanks for explaining, cause I'm getting tired of repeating myself!
-Zispy 3 points 1y ago
I feel awful for you guys. I keep hearing about everyone being understaffed, but my store has been great this whole year and a half I've been with them. Yes we've had staffing issues, but never for very long. Our management is great and this launch we usually have an extra person in case we get super busy.
bulletsproofheart 3 points 1y ago
yeah. tonight was one of the worst shifts ive ever worked. it's brutal out here
VagrantEnchanter 2 points 1y ago
I typically work Tues - Fri... came in to the code on our register, asked sm if it was for anything in particular?

"No, just if you need the code."

Half off tuesday.... haha...nothing in particular...

vincentcaligione318 2 points 1y ago
my store is extremely short staffed and YET we STILL can’t get 40 hours a week 🙄
astrenixie [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yep. I had to tell my store manager multiple times, and now I should be getting at least 20 hours a week. I need to because I'm doing the ASU thing, and they are more strict about it than the other benefits options. Still, nobody should have to beg for hours, let alone just enough to be half time.
vegan-trash 2 points 1y ago
The promo was awful. No staffing and a manager who keeps pressuring us to cut labor.
astrenixie [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Our store is lucky. Even though our manager is new, he really wants to help us. His hands are mostly tied though, because the DM is watching him like a hawk.
AuntieRia1128 2 points 1y ago
I am just grateful it’s only on one drink and it can be spread throughout the day (not just 3 hours)! I was terrified that it would be for as many drinks as you wanted like happy hour used to be. I do think it sucks, don’t get me wrong, but I found this far less stressful than happy hours used to be!
astrenixie [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Oh, for sure! A lot of people still come in and order three drinks minimum though, at least for us. We had tons of cars bring multiple people with the app so they could get more drinks. Like, so many cars got 7 to 10 beverages and then got irritated when they had to wait.
AuntieRia1128 2 points 1y ago
That’s horrible! I’m so sorry! I honestly don’t think many people in my area knew about it, but I think next week will be nuts cause the commercials will be playing on the fb all week and those who used the coupon this week will be telling everyone 😬
BlueWaters99 1 points 1y ago
Can someone explain the 50% Tuesdays. Is it one drink per person? Only if you have the app?? Or only with coupon?
astrenixie [OP] 4 points 1y ago
From what I have been told, it is only for rewards members, and only one drink per member per day when the coupon is active, aka TuesYAYs.
rszdemon 3 points 1y ago
Correct. It will treat it like the old bogo coupon where once it’s scanned on your app it’s used. You get one per week.

It’s basically the BOGO how it should have been from the start. It lowers strain on baristas compared to the disaster that was happy hour (both financially and for labor). Happy hour caused huge issues because corporate didn’t think people would buy 5-6 drinks at once JUST because it was happy hour.

The amount of people who left the register after a barista called me over to explain to try and call the DM was insane. But they were told it’s only one drink per account per week.
