should a high schooler work at an early-closing (5:30pm) starbucks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by avaayuu
I'm a senior in high school this upcoming fall and I recently got a job interview at a Starbucks relatively close to me. I've wanted to become a barista for quite a while now and was really excited about this opportunity. However, I didn't properly research the hours at this particular Starbucks (since I incorrectly assumed most stores close at around 8-9pm), and I realized that this Starbucks closes at 5:30pm.
The problem with potentially working here is that I'll only be able to work on the weekends; the thing is, I have open availability on at least two weekdays after 3pm so I was counting on getting some of my hours after school instead of overloading myself too much on the weekends.
(Even if I get the job I don't wanna sacrifice my mental health by working two eight-hour shifts on the weekends, esp during college app season).
So unless the manager is seriously understaffed and REALLY willing to make exceptions, I'm not sure how plausible this job is.
Since I've already scheduled an interview for this Friday, I was wondering if I should just stick it out and discuss my situation with the manager or if I should just try my luck elsewhere. I don't wanna unnecessarily waste my time going to an interview if I have no intention of taking the job, though. I also don't think I should be wasting the time of the manager if I can only work two shifts a week.
Hopefully I explained my situation properly (this was a bit rambly and long-winded) -- I'm just looking for any input/advice so I can figure out whether to continue pursuing being a partner at this Starbucks location if it closes at 530pm.
\*\*also, if there are any other early-closing Starbucks partners out there, how likely am I to get other high-school coworkers? This might seem irrelevant but I'm scared that even if the manager makes all of these adjustments for me, I'll be the only high-schooler there.\*\*

Starbucks doesn’t allow minors to be scheduled before 7am and after 10pm no matter the area you’re in as far as I’m aware as an asm

A lot of high school students that I've worled woth under different managers and at different locations only work weekends and most partners don't usually get long shifts and a lot of managers rend to give minors 4 - 4.5 hour long shifts until they graduate.

I’m a 17 year old who’s worked here for a little over a year and I’ve never been able to open. I’ve worked mostly pre-closes, and the odd close on holidays when we close early and it has been fine even during school. But you should probably check with the store what type of availability they are hiring for, and be prepared to get less hours than your coworkers during the school year because you will have less availability.

I also work another job that’s really flexible so I’m not that pressed for hours/money; since my Starbucks closes at 5:30pm, I would only be able to work weekends. Is that unheard of? Ik each starbucks is different but having a general idea would be really helpful. Thanks for the advice!

It all depends on the store itself. We genuinely have someone who just works Saturday’s for 4 hours. So it all depends if the manager needs that availability covered.

It depends on the manager tbh. We had an interview where the girl could only open for 2.25 hours and then she had to go to uni, and the interview just ended there. You could always ring and ask before going in for the interview and say what you said here- you assumed the close was later, if it's not possible then you're sorry for wasting their time.

Thanks for the advice! I was thinking about doing something along those lines but have pretty bad phone anxiety haha

The starbucks scheduling system does not let minors work before 7 am or after 10 pm no matter what state you’re in, so you don’t have to worry about opening.
