asm asked me to stay 2 hours late and then left when i was scheduled to be off (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Unlikely_Turnip_9469
basically the title.

ive been working at my store for 3 years now, i go to college out of state so i’m currently only working over summer and winter break. i just started back again this summer, this was maybe my third shift. i opened (4:30 am) with my asm and an ssv, our asm is the one making the schedules right now and she scheduled me once (a 5 HOUR shift) right when i got back and then not at all for two full weeks so i complained to my sm during a shift i picked up, we’re pretty close i didnt expect anything to happen i was just talking to fill the silence. anyways she (asm) asked me to stay until 1 (shift change) instead of getting off at 11 because we didn’t have enough coverage. sure, yeah that’s fine nothing out of the ordinary for my store. well anyways 11:30 rolls around and i ask where she is because im starving and want to eat a snack but definitely don’t want her to see. apparently she dipped right at 11 (she was scheduled until 1). cue shocked pikachu face because if i knew she was actually asking me to switch with her i never would have agreed, apparently she told the ssv i asked her if i could cover the rest of her shift because i missed out on hours the past two weeks. she’s done this to others a bunch before i guess, this is the first i’m hearing of it. and yeah she gets paid salary so no harm no foul for her.

oh yeah and also she left for two hours between 4:30 and 11 because she had to pick up her kid.

edit: obligatory adhd/autism spectrum/im not used to opening so i def acknowledge im cranky from lack of sleep, i just wanted to vent a bit because i was still pretty frustrated sitting in my car after my shift and my coworkers know all too well about all this so i wanted to hear some outside opinions/similar stories!

I mean if you want to be petty about the reason you stay or not I guess just ask next time lol, does the reason really matter? You could’ve said no
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 5 points 1y ago
haha yes i know that i couldve said no, i generally like my job and my coworkers so i initially didnt have a problem with it. it was just frustrating that she lied and said that we desperately needed help when obviously she just wanted to pawn her shift off on me to go f around with her bf and told the ssv that i specifically asked her if i could stay. anyways i just wanted to rant a little bit i totally understand where youre coming from though

Never really posted anything on Reddit, moreso just look around, but this absolutely boiled my blood. You are completely in the right. Given the situation and context, this was disrespectful. Not only was it disrespectful to ask you to stay under “not enough people” circumstances, and then they leave, but it’s also disrespectful in them lying to your coworkers as well. It’s not about “well they asked and you said yes”— not at all. It was deceitful, disrespectful, and lying. I would’ve complained to my SM about it 100%.

thank you! sm knows hahaha, i love her so much but shes more of a person to talk sh*t with than someone who would actually make changes when we bring up problems. it does create a very fun work environment most of the time, though.

when she left , was there no other key holder in the store ??
if she was the only ssv/asm/sm person around , u can report her bc that's not allowed lol
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
luckily yes there was an ssv! we had plenty of coverage and it was a relatively slow day, so we both easily couldve just left at 11 (its not like she usually stays til the end of her shifts anyways haha) that’s what i’m so confused about tho!
sirencursedwithrage 1 points 1y ago
I mean she could've just been asking bc you wanted hours ? but then why didn't she just say that , and why did she lie to the other supervisor

just weird
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah i would definitely understand if it was just about giving me hours, but she gave no indication whatsoever that she would be leaving, just that we needed an extra person for those last two hours. also i heard stories about her doing the same thing w a lot less experienced baristas on much busier days so i doubt it

Just as a note ASMs aren’t real salary. They are OT eligible and have to clock in/out for their shifts/lunch.

They do have to work 40 hours a week.
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i stand corrected! i heard from a coworker she was salaried, but in hindsight i shouldntve assumed. not sure where she gets her 40 hours from, when i work with her at least she tends to leave early but that part’s none of my business
persona-2 2 points 1y ago
So SMs are true salary. Same pay no matter what they work.

ASMs have a “salary” but it’s really a yearly total divided into an hourly figure. The sketchy part comes with that they can edit their own punches. So she could still clock herself in and out for 40, be paid for it, and only work 30. If she is caught she will be fired though.

And it is your business. If she is coverage it comes out of the stores total budget of hours. So if she is supposed to be on the floor for 10 hours and isn’t she is screwing y’all over and leaving you short.

We just had an ASM who would do this sort of thing; leaving when she was scheduled coverage, had partners work her shifts while she sat in the back, complained that she had to be in the building for a certain amount of time to get her benefits.... she was friends with our SM and DM tho so she got away with it easily
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i wouldnt go as far as to say she’s editing her punches, shes a lot more strict about standards and store policies than my sm, but who knows? both schedule themselves as coverage and help on the floor sometimes, but mostly just sit in cafe and do managerial work to help with labor hours, they tried to explain how it helps us too but i still dont get it, why not just schedule themselves for non coverage and then jump in if we need help?

I don't see the problem. She asked you to work and you said yes.
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
yeah i get where youre coming from, i didnt really have a problem working two extra hours its just a pattern with her that she lies to get out of work and just generally treats us like we’re children and/or idiots but just from reading this post and not knowing her at all i understand why it doesnt seem like a big deal
fuwaldah -2 points 1y ago
You wanted more hours. You told the SM, who told the ASM who writes the schedule. They offered you more hours.
Unlikely_Turnip_9469 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
i get it. i think im overreacting a bit about the whole two hours, not a big deal in the scheme of things. its just more the principal of the thing, i dont like being lied to especially by my managers. im also still upset about not being scheduled for two weeks, i was able to pick up one 8 hour shift but i have a completely open availability and told her i could work 40+ hours a week, so (in my opinion) there was no reason not to schedule me at all and i missed out on all that money, its whatever though i make like $9 an hour, i stress myself out way too much over this minimum wage job so feel free to disagree, ignore, or whatever
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 1y ago
OP isnt upset about the extra hours they got offered as stated in the comments and post. OP is upset that the asm made it seem like more coverage was needed and then left at the time OP was originally guna leave at. And on top of that lie to OP, it was that the asm said to others that OP specifically asked to cover the rest of her (asm's shift). If someone doesnt think those 2 situations are messed up, then that same person probably thinks that if a president accomplishes something but lies in the process, its fine because they helped someone out. No. That makes them untrustworthy and a liar. Thats what OP is not happy with
fuwaldah 1 points 1y ago
Then I guess OP should address their concerns with the ASM.
