Should I show up to work knowing I’m going to be fired? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Haroboe
So basically I know the next shift I go to is my last, but I want to be able to get maximum value before I go. I have about 36 hours of sick time off I would like to use, or would it be automatically used when I’m let go. Is there anything I can do to get a little more value or should I just block all Starbucks numbers and just not even show up to save time and gas?

Yes get fired so you get unemployment. Otherwise they can say you quit
verdeuce 34 points 1y ago
Yes they’ll also have your last tips for you. Vacation time will be paid out on your last check but not sick time. You also get paid “reporting time” for showing up and having the termination conversation….depending on the state you’re in
rudebii 60 points 1y ago
If you don’t show up it might be considered job abandonment and no unemployment for you.

If you are getting term’d they’ll call you into the back and do it at the start of the shift.
ConsistentCow5848 4 points 1y ago
Not necessarily. My sm has planned to fire people but not done iy till the middle of their shift out in the cafe
QuinnMcL28 3 points 1y ago
Oh wow. That's pretty harsh.
namastebetches 28 points 1y ago
what did you do?
Haroboe [OP] 116 points 1y ago
I used foul language in front of a customer, the language was not being directed at any partner/customer, it was a mistake which resulted it me saying “f*** me” not a first time offender
i_am_me47 61 points 1y ago
oop can you be fired for this…? asking for a friend hahah.
bluths10dollarbanana 62 points 1y ago
Yes, I had 2 of my best baristas get fired because a customer overheard them cussing and they complained
Swan97 61 points 1y ago
Yep and I got a final writeup for it even though I wasn't the one that cussed. Apparently someone called and since it happened during my shift they blamed me for it since I was in charge and they didn't know who did it. They wanted me to be grateful I wasn't fired but I was pissed. I had never been written up for anything so I quit. I just felt too disrespected and didn't want to stay somewhere where I could be fired for something that they can't even prove I did. Half the store quit after I did though so that was nice

Yes you can be fired for swearing on the floor for any reason.

I asked my SM for the specifics on this once because I was curious and he said that swearing on the floor is instant separation, and swearing in the back of house is a final written warning.
ittybittybakerkitty 12 points 1y ago
Ok but why tho? I understand a write up but really?! Seems a bit much when we're already super understaffed as a whole
Gilofthemushroomfolk 5 points 1y ago
Wow so I always heard that anyone can get fired for swearing on the floor but my coworkers do it literally all the time and no one cares. Is my store just chill or?
almostdied_at711 4 points 1y ago
I got fired for calling someone who didn't even work at Starbucks, who Starbucks had no affiliation with, who was not a customer, on my own time off the clock a deadbeat
I didn't actually call them a deadbeat and they had no proof that I called him a deadbeat either.
aspiringgrandpa 6 points 1y ago
that seems….wrong? no company should be able to fire you for shit you do in your own time unless it’s absolutely diabolical idk
maddogracer161 1 points 1y ago
Yeah...can be an on the spot firing too...
TheDoubleDan 41 points 1y ago
Heaven forbid a fully grown adult hears the 'fuck' word. Oh how that must've negatively impacted them for the rest of their lives! I bet they can't even go near a coffee shop without getting PTSD now.

Yeah you’ve gotta be careful about language. I’ve had some coworkers shocked when, after close, I cursed. Like yeah no… not gonna use anything worse than “darn” while customers are around. Too many Pearl-Clutching boomers that are eager to see young adults fired for expressing their feelings.
QuinnMcL28 7 points 1y ago
Idk if it's bc I'm from NY and pretty much everyone swears all the time but this seems really extreme on the part of Sbux/manager. Sorry you are losing you job over something so petty.
MLGTheForkOnTheLeft 3 points 1y ago
WHAT THE FUCK!? Holy hell. Dude i curse all the damn time and like with some or my customers too. Holy shit maybe i should watch it.
Luna_Raccoona 1 points 1y ago
Every barista in my store has said this many a time 👀
Anonymia1101 4 points 1y ago
i wanna know now too
iwantmysharpieback 25 points 1y ago
I wouldn't recommend blocking the numbers or it may slow down you getting paid
289partnerofq 24 points 1y ago
Call out sick. Every time your manager schedules you again just to do the firing. Call out again. Use the rest of your sick time. When your sick time is all used. Finally go in and let them fire you. Then write it in the book before you walk out. Technically they’ll be forced to put in your sick time. If not, they’ll be deep shit violating labor laws. This is what I did.
aint_that_right 14 points 1y ago
Hah, yeah this doesn’t work. Terrible advice, if the store manager has a brain they won’t schedule you, they’ll just ask you to come in to sign your papers. You can’t take sick time for that!
Accomplished-Bad3856 20 points 1y ago
The law is different in every state, but I’m pretty sure you’re not going to get reimbursed for any unused PTO or sick time on your final check.
mewwissa 14 points 1y ago
Nah cash that shit out. Show up for your last shift to write it in the book, they’ll pay out your unused vacation but not the sick time, I believe. Unless policy has changed in the last year.
Dramatic_Celery_2262 6 points 1y ago
I hate that because customers curse us out all the times. Luckily my shift backed me up and said I didn’t say the “f word” 😒
0x52and1x52 1 points 1y ago
you should definitely call out and use the sick time lol
LatterRooster 1 points 1y ago
Call in sick first. Get the sick time paid first at least one day
No-Chocolate-6828 1 points 1y ago
Yes
juliaandy99 -38 points 1y ago
If your not gonna show up at least get coverage. Otherwise you’re just being inconsiderate of your entire team. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Haroboe [OP] 29 points 1y ago
I found out I was being let go because all my shifts were removed from my schedule on the app and they were all covered without my knowledge/ consent
shmeep10 8 points 1y ago
This happened to me too when I quit,,, I was so pissed bc they took me off the schedules that were out which would be my last two weeks
Johanito69 6 points 1y ago
No my mom
Died can I not go
-yes but did you find coverage 🙄🙄🙄
Johanito69 5 points 1y ago
If the team has even half the sense of empathy they’ll understand sorry you work with soulless people
duckenjoyer69 -26 points 1y ago
If you're still scheduled, yeah don't be a dick
