I'm writing this the day after the worst day I've ever had working at Starbucks. I am a shift here at my store, yesterday opened my eyes that management does not care about us, I had partners call out for my mid day part, which my store manager was aware of, they found me coverage until a certain time, so it was 4 of us at the time until I had to send someone home cause they were not feeling well. 4 came along and that's when my third partner had to go, my SM knew it was just going to be 2 of us, myself and another partner, and still didn't do anything. I had cafe full of people, mobile orders, and on top of that drive thru orders, I had to juggle doing both bars, oven, and takin cafe orders, my co worker isn't well multi tasking and is not ready to bar which is understandable to some point, they are semi new. At this point I did not know what to do, I wanted to walk out, I wanted to cry, I stepped to the back to try to call my DM since my SM was not replying. DM did not answer, I called my other shift and asked them what I should do, and I told them I was going to close cafe myself regardless if I get in trouble. I was having to do this all while I had a stack of orders i needed to do, that's when my SM calls and tells me to close cafe. Why was I put in this mess in the first place, even after I had said I could not do this, I feel like we were not put first. And this should have never happened, idk how I kept my composure and manage to do it. But after yesterday it my last straw and I put in my two weeks cause this company does not deserve me.

I feel also like this sometimes. Like they do not take the time to manage an issue before it occurs. There is no foresight used. They would rather wait until the situation is as bad as it can be and then take action.

This was my situation as a shift for months on end until I finally quit. SM didn’t care and ultimately got fired a few weeks before I quit, DM was new and just didn’t care, and our “stand in” manager was an ASM from a store an hour away and had only been with the company for less than 2 years. My store was the busiest in the region. They would only schedule me one opener, which my whole morning crew was either brand new or just awful and unreliable. The final straw was them scheduling me one new girl to open with that was always late before but then just stopped showing up for an entire week and wouldn’t respond to any of my calls or messages. I told the stand in manager that this girl was not going to show up the day before, and her response was “well, just call me in the morning if she doesn’t show up but keep in mind I live an hour and a half away.” Uhhhhh. Then she had me enter the building BY MYSELF to count money from the safe BY MYSELF with her on the phone to “witness.” I should’ve turned her into my DM, but I ended up just staging a strike and stopped showing up, got the rest of my morning crew on board and the store didn’t open until like 11 or noon for a few days. Fuck Starbucks. They truly do not care about partners, they care about profits. So when they fuck around with you, you fuck around with their profits.

Man, with all the shit this company is doing, I'm glad I got out when I did. Long!Covid kicked my ass last summer and I was out for two months. Pretty sure they just replaced me, but I was too sick to keep in touch and don't know what happened. Oh well. Just one more notch in my belt in my life in retail.

I kinda felt like it was 3 years wasted. I was about to become an ASM at a brand new store, but they just continuously fucked me over. I knew they’d expect me to run on fumes just the same if I became an ASM, and I wasn’t willing to be subjected to anymore bullshit.

I’m so sorry this has been your experience at the company. I totally get what you’re saying, but sometimes I feel like it’s less that Starbucks doesn’t care, and more directly related to your specific store staff. It totally shouldn’t be that way, but I think because Starbucks is such a big company, the experience of employees is much more directly related to their store manager and district.
From having various jobs, I do feel like Starbucks cares as far as our benefits because in my opinion our benefits are great. There’s definitely so much more progress to be made on labor, but tbh I don’t really know of any workplace that doesn’t have that issue. In all of the jobs I’ve had, it’s the people that make or break the employee experience, and less about the company directly.
In this case, your store manager and DM are directly to blame. I absolutely agree with you, there is absolutely no excuse for you to be put in any of these situations. I have no idea how your SM or DM got hired. Their behavior is absolutely inappropriate and beyond out of line and there’s no excuse as to why you were put in these f’d up situations.
I hate that the experience of working at Starbucks directly relates to the specific location. My SM has always been there for us and will come in and help us out if there’s call outs and no one will cover, and I’m infinitely grateful she’s our SM. She goes above and beyond, and I hate that other managers are the total opposite of that. I really think Starbucks has some strides to make in workplace conditions, but also the specific location really plays a major part in the partner experience and I wish it wasn’t that way. I hope you find an opportunity where you’re appreciated, supported, and valued for the hardworking and amazing employee you are. Wishing you all the best ✨

I have to say I agree with all of this ⬆️
I’ve worked in several different stores with several different SM’s and WHO you work with makes ALL the difference in your experience!!!! My last SM was the absolute best ever!! Like this comment ⬆️ said about their SM, my last one would come in and help out if we needed her. She truly cared about the team and the store.
My current SM is the opposite and only works mornings, highly favors the morning crew and only helps find coverage if someone on the morning crew calls out. Multiple times (in the 5 weeks I’ve been here) different people have contacted the SM to call out for the night shift and the SM does nothing, no coverage and doesn’t even let the closing ssv know someone called out!
Two VERY different experiences! All because of WHO runs the store.

Exactly! So true. It’s all about who runs the store, and a lot less to do with Starbucks as a company. I’ve had a variety of jobs and at the end of the day it really doesn’t have much to do with the company and instead has much more to do with my coworkers.
I hope your current SM changes their ways for the better or that you can get a better SM!

This is in an issue with Starbucks as there has been a increase in bad hires and corporate culture not changing to help us manage the increase in work load. Most of the good people still working at this company are new hires. During the Shultz video what was it over 70% of the company is new hires or something. There has been massive turnover and that's for a reason something's wrong with either the hiring or corporate culture.

If your store manager doesn’t respond immediately to shit like this — put your two weeks in. It’ll only get worse.
I am store manager at a licensed store and sometimes, honestly I hate the job, and I look forward to not having to do it one day but I will never fail to answer my baristas when they need me. That is what a manager does.

You couldn't be more right! Good for you for recognizing your worth and putting your 2 weeks in. It's my goal to promote myself to partner one day soon, too.
