Calling out sick (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mekayla96
Can you get written up or in trouble for calling out sick? I don’t do it often but feel so guilty every time. Today I needed a mental health day and it’s really bothering me thinking that everyone at the store is annoyed even though I know they don’t care.

No only if you do it a lot. And don’t feel guilty! If they are not adequately staffed because of your absence that is not your fault. Most stores are understaffed and overworked. Only reason your coworkers should care or be annoyed that you called out is if you do it all the time

Okay. I’ve called out 3 times total since I started in March. Idk if that’s a lot or not 🥴 I just feel so bad but other people at my store do it way more often so idk. I know I shouldn’t justify it based on other peoples behavior though.

Nah that’s not a lot. I’ve had coworkers that called off like once a week for a whole year and they still have their job

Okay haha 😂 yeah we do too lmao. I’m just super paranoid and really need this job

I get that I used to feel bad too. But this job is honestly not worth getting stressed over it’s pretty hard to get fired in my experience

Yeah I’ve only called out 3 or 4 times in the 4/5 months I’ve worked here. Once was because I thought I had covid which I didn’t but didn’t want to risk it.

At my store we consider mental illness an illness. If you need time to recover, take it. There is a cap for calling out, but it doesn't sound like you are anywhere near it. You are also supposed to call in with a reasonable amount of time so that the team can find coverage if needed. Any time a partner is sick, a nice thing to do would be to ask partners for coverage for the shift. But it isn't really required and you don't need to feel guilty if you aren't up for it. It doesn't sound like you have anything to fear and less than anything about which you should feel guilty.
