Has anyone done Graphic Design through ASU? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sherdle
I have zero confidence in myself in all areas, as a preface.

I’m online starting classes for graphic design in the fall, and I wanted to see if anybody had gone the same route and had any feedback for me to ruminate on. I’ve never done online schooling, and I haven’t been to college in roughly ten years (life’s been weird, ok?)

Any thoughts or commentary would be awesome, even from partners who went for other majors or didn’t end up graduating. Thanks, pals!

i'm entering my sophomore year in the graphic design program at asu. here are some things to know about the studio class (principles of graphic design i) and the program as a whole: the first two years of the program focus on primarily hands-on physically made design work that focuses on the principles and basics of graphic design. the last two years of the program focus more on digital work/branding/web design/etc. the program is very intense and you will need to dedicate a lot of time to every project. many students struggle with being able to balance a job with school because of how much dedication is required. at first, you will likely be confused by the projects and won't understand the lessons that are supposed to come out of them. this is very normal. eventually, you will see the value in every project you complete and things will start to make more sense as you progress through the semester. the syllabus is vague and hard to navigate on purpose as it is meant to encourage students to ask more questions. i highly suggest watching this video: https://youtu.be/km9-XcV-hoc. this all may sound daunting but I promise it is all worth it and your fellow students will support each other and help each other out. time management is the biggest skill that will allow you to succeed in this program.

as for history of graphic design, ATTENDANCE IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. if you have enough absences you will fail the class and be held back (literally). a lot of students sign in for each other if they can’t make it to class (you didn’t hear that from me tho🤭🤭).

GOOD LUCK!!!! my love for graphic design has definitely grown due to this program and you learn so much from every project. just trust the process and make sure to prioritize your mental health in the midst of all of it. i hope none of this sounds scary I promise it’s not that bad as long as you take care of yourself and practice good time management!!

Frick.
Okay well thanks TONS for the info, first of all. I was second-guessing myself before even reading this, so don’t even worry about it, haha!
I’m addition to working full time, I have four kiddos, so I’m not feeling particularly optimistic about my success on this path, but what heck, righttt? The worst that can happen is I flunk right out, or that I switch majors to something less demanding, which I’m okay with.

After speaking with the advisor, she kind of walked me through how this was going to look for me, and I’m just going to take it a day at a time and see what happens. But I’m really nervous about it, haha.

Thanks again. I’ll definitely be watching that video. I’m also going to invest in like a REALLY nice planner and also I guess I’m just not going to sleep for the next x years and who even needs free time, really?

sigh

i think the online version of this major is a little more flexible? I’m speaking from doing everything in-person. but yeah i think it’s always good to explore more options if you already have a pretty busy life. one of my professors went through this program while pregnant and working full time and she graduated, so it’s definitely possible, but the sacrifices that will need to be made may not work for everyone. i’m glad someone could tell you all of this before actually starting the semester! 😅
