Anyone else have their Starbucks AC break and temps reach 100+ degrees and the owner tried to make your crew still work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by em0tional-shawty
AC broke in our store and it reached 104 degrees in the store and the owners response was "I'm bringing fans" so we closed the store and left :)

OSHA violation, call corporate
arobynn_hamel 21 points 1y ago
My store ac breaks alot and the highest ive seen it is 96. How high is it for an OSHA violation?
BarracudaBae 22 points 1y ago
Anything above 78 degrees is considered a violation, if I remember correctly
lion-vs-dragon 7 points 1y ago
Omg I wish I would have known this 8 years ago working at a DQ with the ac broken on a 90F day in with no fans, and the ice cream machines couldn't even make ice cream because they couldn't stay cold. We still somehow had to stay and work -_-

Link to the specific OSHA rule, for clarity. Boutta go OFF on someone if i gotta work in the Texas heat with no AC.
DragonPuffMagic 5 points 1y ago
There is no OSHA regulation on heat in the workplace. There is a recommendation, but no enforcement. Workers just have to have access to water. I work in an environment that regularly is 100+.

This is definitely something that should be addressed in contract negotiations.
looker009 5 points 1y ago
Please link, I am not aware of any such OSHA rule

Like our store is always hot anyways, but even customers were coming up to the register with sweat pouring down their faces and my employee was throwing up from the heat and they were like "does the hotel have a fan you can borrow? Can we prop open the doors?" Like it wasn't already 91 degrees outside. 🙃 we didn't even clean anything, we just left because of how dangerously hot it was. Even the district manager later on said protocol is to close the store and she was really trying to make us work in that.
esaeklsg 12 points 1y ago
Not my store, but I knew of one that only closed when all the fridges started failing to keep things in temp because it was so hot. I woulda walked if it was mine.
sirencursedwithrage 9 points 1y ago
omg I would've had to leave. that's unsafe. and I can't regulate my own body temperature so
CheetoBurrito24 8 points 1y ago
Hey. Not to be like, that person /s, but um, have you heard about Starbucks Workers United?
em0tional-shawty [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, I reached out but we are third party owned and they responded once and I never heard from them again after they asked which location we were unfortunately. I don't know if we are even able to unionize. There's so many terrible situations we've been put through at this store tbh. This isn't even the first.
CheetoBurrito24 2 points 1y ago
Oh gosh I’m so sorry. Yes if you are not a corporate store you can’t unionize within the Starbucks umbrella
DasTeufelkind86 6 points 1y ago
Yeah, my friend works at one that's had their AC out for weeks. They can't find anyone to fix it supposedly, because the AC unit is like 50 years old. I guess no one's thought to fucking replace it??

But yeah, there's AC in the lobby. For the guests. They brought in portable ACs for them, but the staff just get to suffer.
cpv_91 3 points 1y ago
Our AC had been broken for 10 weeks. We're in for So Florida. Replacement originally due in 20 weeks, now new estimate is end of July. I'll believe it when it actually arrives. They installed two stand up units that are keeping the lobby cool 😵 while we melt behind the line. When it's in the 90s outside its definitely hovering in the 90s for us.
DasTeufelkind86 4 points 1y ago
That's gotta be OSHA violation. I hope yall get yours replaced shortly!
Dumptruckbb 5 points 1y ago
We have a regular who owns another popular franchised Resturant in town, and when our AC went out he just brought his industrial fans. It was fine because it was fixed either that same day or the next morning, but if you’re dealing with this for days then that’s ridiculous.
Starbucks_IVF_MAMA 4 points 1y ago
My store doesn't even have a thermostat to see the temperature 😐
Electrical_Metal_106 3 points 1y ago
Any of the store thermometers (like the ones we have in the steaming pitchers) would show you the temp of the air.

Here’s the “official” osha guidelines(but not on an osha website)- I think it’s mainly for manufacturing jobs, but he we manufacture beverages, and it’s like an assembly line and the time constraints are Very similar!! Anyway, we would probably fall under “light work” according to most standards, but the people making those “standards” just don’t know… I would say we are closer to “moderate”…I tried to post a screen shot, but I can’t so just click the link and scroll until your see bullet points- https://www.jacksonlewis.com/publication/osha-s-heat-standard-likely-affect-indoor-manufacturing-facilities#:~:text=The%20permissible%20heat%20level%20cannot,level%20is%2080%20degrees%20Fahrenheit.

There is no OSHA rule on temp. I am not sure there is any internal rule about it
Pillsburyhoeboy19 1 points 1y ago
In Florida I was working in a domino's with no ac that reached 112° and they still had us working 🥲

I believe if it’s over 78 you aren’t supposed to work… lol

Then my store would be closed all summer 🤪
