How are you guys handling the customers who yell in your face regarding price changes?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MrDrProfessorBalls
It’s as if they think we do it personally just for a laugh as if our entire planet isn’t experiencing the worst inflation.
turtleben24861 points1y ago
Talk a ton of shit about them with coworkers and friends and family. Get that anger out
MrDrProfessorBalls [OP]10 points1y ago
LOL i mostly mean how do i respond to the customer but that is the logical answer
astro-jason31 points1y ago
My goto is “Starbucks has been raising prices every quarter(, guess our CEO needs another boat because they’re not paying us more.) Sorry about that”
MrDrProfessorBalls [OP]8 points1y ago
i like that. to the t
turtleben24816 points1y ago
Lol I'm usually just like "yeah, I know..." or "yeah, prices are going up everywhere" or "yeah sorry"
MrDrProfessorBalls [OP]6 points1y ago
i like that, keeping it simple. my last couple shifts i’ve had a handful of people at my dt window insist on some explanation as to why and try to blame us for ‘ringing it in wrong’. i always get caught on my own words in those situations
turtleben2487 points1y ago
Omg, of course they do. If they ask for an explanation I would just say "I don't know", if you're comfortable with that. You can always say "I can get my supervisor" if they really pester
mrcupcake182 points1y ago
Yeah I always keep it simple. Idk if this is bad but I just pretend everyone is dumb (cause most are) don’t over explain, don’t use a lot of “Starbucks” terms just keep it short and sweet because they will either not get it or don’t care so why waste the energy?
Mea-fae_Owl730 points1y ago
For those who demand an explanation I tell them just like I am paying more for my groceries, Starbucks is paying more for the ingredients to make their drinks and logistic cost have gone up. I’m sorry but we baristas don’t make the prices or cause the inflation we are all feeling.
cpv_9137 points1y ago
My answer.. "
I don't have an answer for you that will satisfy you. I can tell you that it's not going into my paycheck but feel free to call corporate. 1800starbucks and let them know how upset you are."
And don't ever apologize.. It's NOT our fault.
board-certified17 points1y ago
“damn that’s wild”
MrDrProfessorBalls [OP]3 points1y ago
LMAOOOOO
AmIAwakeOr16 points1y ago
I never tell them I'm sorry. I don't have any power over the prices. I tell them to contact Starbucks corporate offices directly. Then I make sure if they want that iced or hot and carry on. Life's too short to engage these people for very long.
trbpanda14 points1y ago
i always say "yeah corporate likes to raise their prices without telling anyone im sorry i think it sucks too". get them mad at the higher ups not me i just work here lol
celloqueer6 points1y ago
Don’t apologize, just tell them something to the effect of, “I know, I’ve been seeing prices go up every couple of months and we know when we see it on the register that people won’t be happy.”
Some people are just assholes but some people will calm down if you acknowledge them. Yesterday item availability wouldn’t work at all and this woman looked like she was about to lose her shit because we were out of the chocolate croissants she mobile ordered. But I refunded her, showed her through the drive window how the screen just said loading and wouldn’t do anything when I tried to Mark the croissants out, and she got it. At least a solid 50% of customers who get really pissy are trying to get their Starbucks bc their day also sucked and so if you level with them that shit isn’t working they sometimes get it.
Jefferson_steelflex-5 points1y ago
I just go like yeah…. Corporate keeps raising prices.
LycaenopsPictus4 points1y ago
"Haha I know right? Believe me, if I had the power to make these kinds of decisions I wouldn't be makin' drinks. What can I get started for ya today?"
PerspectiveCapable983 points1y ago
I just say yup and it’ll keep going up with a smile 😁
kikisoats3 points1y ago
“yeah i just work here. i got nothing to do with the price changes…”
I_like_to_know3 points1y ago
I say, "I know, prices are going up everywhere, it's crazy these days" or something like "tell me about it, I recently saw something on the news that families are paying $300 a month more on groceries than two years ago, price increases are everywhere you look" for anything else just say "hey, they don't ask for my input on those decisions so I'm not sure of the why, if you call 1800starbuc someone in customer service might have a better answer for you" Sometimes, if they realize (without you actually saying it) that it's not your fault they start treating you like a human again. Sometimes.
turntmosfet2 points1y ago
I usually say something along the lines of "yeah, they're robbing us here behind the bar too. Those shareholders keep getting richer while we both keep getting poorer, haha"
idk_why10002 points1y ago
If they just point it out/ask if prices have gone up I just half heatedly acknowledged that they've gone up.
If they get angry and ask why prices have been raised I'm honest with them, I tell them that no one even told me prices were being raised until I saw it myself on the register and I'm not nearly important enough to be given any explanation on the increases.
If they're still mad I also tell them that I get my coffee from Starbucks too, so my coffee has also gotten more expensive and I really don't like it either, especially since we're paid peanuts.
I'm usually dead in the eyes when I say this so most customers either pity me enough to drop it, or they realize I'm just an unimportant cog in this machine and raging at me won't change anything.
Accomplished-Bad38562 points1y ago
“Yeah I heard the CEO got a raise”
Necessary_Low9392 points1y ago
I never had this happened and I’d probably tell them to go to Dunkin’ Donuts or something t
No-Macaroon-42651 points1y ago
Lmao honestly idk how you guys just don’t respond with the same energy they give you. If someone is yelling at me I’m not going to respond politely, get away from me if you’re going to be an asshole.
Mnmpringles1 points1y ago
The people that just grumble and complain I just say something like “yeah I know…” but the people that get belligerent I straight up ask them what they want me to do about it and then they have to stop and think for once in their lives and they get all grumbly about that, get their stuff and leave.
LilKaySigs1 points1y ago
“I’m just a college student working minimum wage with no bearing on the prices”
Minimum_Salary_63191 points1y ago
I’ve been saying “they raise it with every new launch unfortunately. I always say i wish they raised our wages that much!” to kind of hint at hey im not getting any benefit from this either.
Forest06291 points1y ago
I just repeat “I know, I know” with an emotionless face until they leave
derrussian1 points1y ago
Prices have barely been touched at my liscensed store. They were raised once or twice and that was it and it was more than a month ago. But we've been doing our best to train our new baristas on how to properly ring up different syrup pumps, caramel drizzle, etc. And people keep thinking when they're charged the actual price that it was inflation.
Our customers are truly in for a rude awakening once we go live with Stsrbucks Connect in a couple weeks and can much more easily ring people in properly
Longjumping_Stick_561 points1y ago
blame inflation. just say the price of everything is going up so the prices of drinks have to go up as well to meet a certain profit margin. that should shut them up they can’t argue with that.
