Availability Change? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sentinelspook
Hello!
I just got hired at the sbux not too long ago, and my first day is tomorrow! I have my availability for training set as 8-4, but I would like to change it to opening shifts after this first week..
Do you think they would allow it since I just started? I’m also a full-time barista.
Thanks a lot!

Edit: I want to change it back to opening because I plan to attend ASU online for Electrical Engineering! How long do I have to work at sbux, before I can enroll?

I’m not sure if you’re in the US (most barista positions aren’t full-time, in fact it’s pretty rare. I’m going to take that as a hint).

But if you are, usually your schedule is posted 3 weeks in advance. You would still need to work those days or find coverage/switch shifts. However, changing availability might be tough depending on your manager. My manager would not allow me to switch because she hired me specifically for my availability I presented to her & it would make it difficult to do so. I recommend talking to your manager about that.

Also, by my understanding because I also plan to attend ASU for accounting, you would need to work 240 total hours over 3 full, consecutive months until you qualify.

You may call them to ask about eligibility once you reach the minimum requirement. You can also find out in the hub where it says “benefits”.

Technically speaking, all baristas and shift supervisors are hired as part time employees, even if they receive full time hours. (There’s no legal standard by the FLSA or DOL for full vs part time in the US)

But yes for ASU - in three calendar months, you must hit 240 hours. Then at the start of the fourth month you can enroll in benefits, and your benefits eligibility kicks in at the start of the fifth month

I’m in the US!
I’m also from a verryy small area, and they are hiring me for a new store so they are hiring both full and part timers.

Okay cool! I only got my first week for training so far, so I’ll see tomorrow if the SM is there and talk to them about it!

And thanks! I don’t have my partner number yet, but I’ll def look when I do!

That explains it! Because it’s a small store and it’s fairly new, I’m guessing it won’t be much of a problem then :) I’d still see and check with your SM.

Best of luck!
