because then they have to pay livable wages to the staff
Ghost_Venom_62 points1y ago
Livable wages, better benefits, and they'd have to treat us like human beings.

- It is easy to say no to a single employee. It’s a lot harder to say no to 1000 simultaneously - It is a bad look for them. Especially as a company that is typically regarded as having good benefits - It creates an “us vs. them” work environment which is not great for the company culture they desire
Ultimately, the above reasons can negatively affect shareholders sentiment with the company which is horrid for corporate Starbucks

And it’s harder to fire a unionized worker because the Union might back them up or defend them

Hey guys, remember that when your manager prints and puts up those completely verifiable and very specifically worded, unbiased, and not at all Starbucks corporate written Union Info Sheets to NOT mess up the QR code!!! They have to be readable to take you to the Starbucks webpage so if you took your Sharpie and scribble on the squares in any little way, you can't read them, so be sure not to do that!!! Wouldn't want to obstruct Starbucks informing people about something so important as worker's rights and manageable working conditions <3

when a company pays its workers a fair rate for their labor, there is generally less "profit" for major shareholders to hoard.
the corporate board of major shareholders booted kevin johnson and replaced him with howard schultz because howard is ruthless in his union busting tactics. they did this to ensure their monopoly over all of the money starbucks makes remains in their own hands. and to ensure that other investors don't divest from starbucks.

beyond weird! i wanted to transfer to a store closer to my house with gas prices being what they are, but it would've taken way more time and effort on my part to "prove" i would be a good fit for that store. instead of, you know, doing what was best for my financial and physical well-being, they decided to make it a huge burden for me to bear alone. it's almost like they want to burn us out so we can't demand better conditions.
maddogracer1616 points1y ago
Bro, I drive 40 minutes to my store because the store 5 minutes from my home has refused my transfer as a SSV despite interviewing for the position every 6 months when someone doesn't work out.
Sdee12343 points1y ago
*They want you to burn out so all the tenured baristas who need a living wage quit and they can hire a new wave of young baristas that they can overwork and scare into cooperating with them...
mama_bibi2 points1y ago
This but also. When you have a revolving door the benefits don't actually get paid out. They say they don't want a high turn over rate but in reality that is what they want because it benefits them financially to not actually have to pay anything out...stocks, insurance, education...

Corporations exist to get as much profit as possible, and to increase the rate of profit on a quarterly basis to show improved performance. Profit is the amount of value they derive from sales above the cost of running business, maintaining and improving equipment, store / office rent, and employee pay. To increase profit they have to increase the cost of the product, improve efficiency to produce more product, or decrease cost of business - typically by reducing employee pay relative to inflation. Typically they want to do multiple.
Unions provably increase the pay and other benefits for employees through collective bargaining. There is a clear antagonism between management and workers here, because workers want to get paid more and have better benefits to survive and have better lives, and management wants to pay as little as possible, and increasly lower how little they pay.
So of course they don't support unions, they will say and do everything in their power, lie cheat and steal their way into avoiding unionization - or coopt unions if possible. But employees should absolutely push to unionize and use it as a platform to take power from management as much as possible, the same way management will fight to reduce worker power as much as possible. /rant

You’re thinking about a company that gives a shit it’s employees. Starbucks doesn’t
Berrypenguin4 points1y ago
capitalism.
mewwissa2 points1y ago
Workers wouldn’t have to unionize if they were treated like human beings 🤷🏻♀️ obviously they push back on it because they want to continue getting away with forcing employees to work on less money, less people, and faster.
KurtzKOButtz2 points1y ago
Cuz it costs money and corporations love money more than treating people well
BabyH1ppo2 points1y ago
Their reasoning is, they can't give new benefits to partners without having to go through the union first. So it just makes it harder for them to expand benefits. Again... Their reasoning. Not mine.
uwumoment12 points1y ago
lol they’re lying. it’s not that hard for them to give us benefits, they just want to scare us
MrsClaireUnderwood6 points1y ago
That's not reasoning, that's an excuse.Their reasoning is they don't want to pay their employees more than they legally have to but they can't say that.
moodycatdog811 points1y ago
Because unions sucks.....
KobeJay22-1 points1y ago
THIS! I previously worked at a Starbucks licensed store that was unionized , IT WAS AWFUL! I hated the union. I’m so much happier at my current Starbucks store that isn’t unionized. Btw the unions don’t really do the stuff they promise. I made less at my union store, and then you have to pay your union dues every paycheck.

Unions protect the small and in the end never help the company.

What is a union with
LatteMaster-25 points1y ago
Unfortunately both sides lose. Employees dont make enough to make a union worth it in many areas(specific to Starbucks im saying). Starbucks will have less control and more legal nightmares. All of this would have been solved if they bothered to look at what McDonald’s is doing and actually pay 18-19 an hour with benefits. Instead they do “raises” that anyone with half a brain would see are bs.
Also before people comment “anti-union”. Please make sure you fully understand that when you are under a union you must pay union dues, the company can still tell you to fuck off and you will have to arbitrate and even then you can still lose!. Primarily for part time workers and students who just want their money its typically not worth it. Unions are an option, not necessarily the BEST, just the forced one in this case.
