Am I gonna be in trouble for this?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by LaurabelleBabe
I worked a 7-12:30 today. At 5:30 am I woke up with food poisoning and immediately knew I had to call out. I attempted to do so only to be met with a busy tone on the phone. Called a bunch more, tried coworkers, tried to call another store in the area to see if they knew any other numbers. Eventually it was 6:45, I was unable to leave my bathroom so I sent my husband to the store to get someone to call me. None of them knew the phone was apparently down and the shift sounded really annoyed until they figured out I was telling the truth about the phones. Technically I didn’t call out early enough but it’s not my fault right? Like I shouldn’t get in trouble for this…

You don’t have to worry about it, it’s not your fault the phone is down and the shift should not make you feel guilty for calling out

^ I can’t imagine spending more than 15 minutes trying to contact the store when I’m already feeling sick, and I wouldn’t expect it from anyone else.

Update: I have a 101 fever. Covid negative (went and got a test) but I probably have the flu. 🥲

Oh, that is definitely not simple food poisoning. You shouldn’t get in trouble for that.

i hope you feel better soon! regardless of what it is that sounds miserable. i wouldn't worry about the calling out issue; sure it's annoying but it wasn't anyone's fault and you clearly did your best.

My coworker had an asthma attack and same thing happened to her. Phones weren’t working. Sadly, she did in fact get in trouble for not calling ahead of time (told us at 5 am in the group chat even though her shift started at 10 am). I thought it was dumb. I understand finding coverage is hard, but illnesses can be so unexpected.

You should not get in trouble for being sick. Also, nothing is ever *just* food poisoning. Food poisoning can be incredibly serious and lead to lifelong disabilities and death depending on the specific cause. You should definitely go to an urgent care if your symptoms continue. Even if it is a minor case of food poisoning, you could be severely dehydrated from it.

I can’t speak for your store but I’m a shift and i’ve had this happen before - Barista tried calling out but the wireless phone was dead and I didn’t notice. Once I went to call him and ask him where he was, I noticed the phone was dead, then checked the collar ID and sure enough he called like 7 times. That’s not a reason at all to be mad at the barista. You can be mad at the situation but the barista didn’t do anything incorrectly so as a manager you need to direct your frustration away from your peers. That’s how I see it. Sorry this doesn’t help, just my two cents 🤪

I wouldn’t have sent my husband. That’s what they get. That’s actually really common for Starbucks phones to be disconnected and sound busy. Idk why.

You're more than in the right. If you're in any kind of trouble, leave that store immediately. No Starbucks job is worth your health. Your bosses can understand that, or they can lose you. That's their choice.
