Does the CUP fund cover transportation expenses?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by devilsreject4926
I'm homeless and live in a camper. I've been working for Starbucks since 2019, but in January I totalled my car and since I can't afford to get another one I've been having to Uber to work since it's too far to walk every day. I just checked my bank balance and I am flat out broke and won't get my paycheck until next week. I don't know how I will be able to get to work. I can't even afford food because all my money goes to bills and paying for Uber to get to work. To make matters worse, my hours got cut, so my last paycheck was tiny, and now my hours have gone up but because of the previous cut I now have no way of getting to work. Does Starbucks provide assistance for any of these issues?? I don't want to tell my manager in fear of being fired for not having transportation or being judged by her. It would be humiliating if I told her.
Edit: whoever downvoted this, gimme ur location so I can beat some empathy into you :)

The CUP fund can grant you a maximum of $1000. But don’t list the reasoning for you needing this money something like paying bills. Tell your SM you’re applying for the fund so they can vouch for you and help you obtain the fund money. Best of luck to you, they got back to me within a week

Thank you! I'll put it down as bills and inform my manager.

No don’t put it down as bills! The reason I put was like a down payment on an apartment or something

Ohhh okay. That makes sense. I'm attempting to save for an apartment right now anyway.

I feel you my dude, the fund is a really good stepping stone

The cup fund is pretty limited in what it covers.
Transportation wise, the cup fund won’t help, but you can get 20 $20 Lyft credits at some locations, to be used before 6am or after 6pm.

Any ideas on what I can do other than killing myself? Cuz I'm out of options.

Look into if your store is eligible for the lyft program
See if there’s any public transportation options that may be feasible for you (my husband was having to walk 20 mins to take two busses to work for a while)
Reach out to some coworkers and see if anyone is in a similar area to you and can maybe cut the distance at all (keep the details minimal, just say your car is in the shop right now or something)
See if your manager is able to schedule you for fewer, longer shifts to reduce how much transportation you need

Thanks. There's no public transport in my area and some of my coworkers know I don't have a car, but unfortunately I live in the opposite direction from everyone I've asked to carpool with. I will try asking for longer shifts in less quantity though. That could definitely help. Still not sure how I can get to work today but I'll figure something out.

If you have Facebook, maybe there’s a “buy nothing” group where you could get a bicycle? Not sure just how far you live from work but that’s another option.

please talk to your manager!! ive never had to do this so im not entirely sure about the process and whatnot but i know starbucks does offer paid transportation (either through lyft or uber i cant remember) for partners that cant get to work any other way

Oh sweet. I'll try talking to her about it then, since it is an option. I just didn't want to go to her with a problem that can't be solved by Starbucks. Thanks!

Sorry to hear you're going through such a hard time! As some others have mentioned, there is a program where the company will reimburse you for at least some commute expenses through Lyft.
DEFINITELY at least apply for the cup fund. Your situation is 100% why it exists. A couple of my coworkers just recently made use of it to avoid being evicted from their apartment (behind on rent due to car repair expenses). It's literally one of the best parts of this company.
Beyond that, PLEASE talk to your manager. Especially if you're literally going hungry at the moment. Most decent store managers will do whatever they reasonably can to take care of their team in my experience, and it rarely hurts to ask for help.
