Former partner here. I had to leave Starbucks a few years ago due to my husband being stationed overseas. We just recently moved back stateside and I've tried applying back to Starbucks at 10+ locations. Am I missing something on being hired? I swear it's been crickets. I had 5+ years of previous experience with Starbucks and over 3 years of shift experience. Is it a lot more competitive to be hired as a shift now than it was before?

Especially for a shift position, just because there’s an open job posting doesn’t mean there’s an open position (according to my manager)
You might have better luck either calling or going in and asking if they’re hiring shifts
beetreddwigt [OP]4 points1y ago
Yeah I know every store is required to always post "open" positions even when they don't have an opening. I have already made contact with a few stores. It's just incredibly frustrating that I had to quit to move overseas, I had no intention of leaving my job before I was in the process of training to interview to be an ASM. I just wish Starbucks actually would support military family partners more than just putting a badge on their apron and maybe be able to hold the position with the company so I could've just transferred when I moved back. I'm just worried I'm going to have to start all over again as a barista.

I say this as a fellow military spouse: A few years is a LONG time to guarantee a position with a company. It's not a reasonable ask. It doesn't make SB's military family support performative.
I understand you wanted to move up and didn't want to leave your position, per se... but when you married your soldier, you got the career instability AND the Tricare. It's that military life. We take the good and the bad.
I also don't think it's a terrible thing to start over as a barista. Friend, that's a stepping stone to where you want to go, not a step down. Truth is, regardless of why you left, you haven't been employed with this company for a few years. A lot has changed. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to have to take a minute to recalibrate yourself to the way things are now, and then promote up. There's still no minimum time in the baristas' position required before promoting up. It's an "in", if you can get over the worry of "starting over as a barista".

I understand where you are coming from but I didn't bust my butt for 8 years to start all over again. I have volunteer experience in my resume gap and plenty of other items listed as achievements. For me personally, yes taking a job as a barista would be starting over.

I work at a “military store” and our district has a military liaison (SM who works directly with members of the base for a variety of programs). See if the district you now live in has one. We aggressively recruit military family. It saddens me that your experience isn’t being sought after, even if they are no open positions.
beetreddwigt [OP]2 points1y ago
Oh wow I didn't even know those types of stores existed. Thanks for the heads up. I'll see if this district has one. I'm by a base currently, so hopefully I can find one.

I know that they have to hold positions for people who are in the reserves, I wish that would extend to military spouses and families, as you said. I'm sorry you're experiencing this, especially when Starbucks says that they support those of us in the military, out, or families. (I'm a veteran which is why I said "us," please don't come for me😂)
beetreddwigt [OP]4 points1y ago
Haha don't worry I won't come for you. I'm not a dependa who thinks I serve 😂
Tvdrone1629 points1y ago
Why hire experienced people when you can already work your skeleton crew to death while complaining no one wants to work. Starbucks just eating cake.
beetreddwigt [OP]5 points1y ago
Is it really that bad now? I worked there prior to COVID
Tvdrone167 points1y ago
In October it'll be 5 years for me, I've read between the lines of why night crew is always understaffed, "we don't make enough at night to warrant another person" when we're literally having drive thru wrapped out into traffic because people leave their jobs around 5-8. They moved our drive thru oven to the exact opposite side of the store because it's "standard" now and if we want it moved back we would have to "make a case". So we did. Morning people have enough labor to have planted positions there, but not at night. Was told to get fucked because morning crew likes it. It may just be a SM issue, but everyone I've talked to at other stores has similar issues. It's a shit show ever since the unionization started, they're just lashing out at their workers now. I wouldn't bother trying until Howard is gone, he's the main anti union pusher.
beetreddwigt [OP]3 points1y ago
That sucks. I remember I had a similar issue when I worked nights. We would be a Skelton crew after 3pm. I used to have to take my lunches an hour into my shift because we didn't have coverage for it later. It's definitely something where I wish leadership would just throw in a few coverage days to prove that they could earn more if they had more coverage
orsonvulture2 points1y ago
Right now at my store we're running on skeleton crew on any shift that isn't morning. We aren't a low volume store either, not the highest out there but it definitely isn't warranted to the extent that they're cutting labor so I would say it's pretty bad in some places for sure. The worst part honestly is we don't get clean plays anymore so it just makes closing even harder since it's hell getting one person and the SSV to fully clean everything considering nothing gets cleaned the way it should be since we literally don't have time or people to help clean :(
Tvdrone162 points1y ago
Yeah God forbid I have at least one person for four hours to help cover 30s would be amazing
roomoney4 points1y ago
It all depends on store needs. Sometimes, shift teams don't turn over that often so the need is fewer and far between of that as a barista role. You best bet is to call stores and see if they are actually actively hiring for the SSV role. The req is always open, doesn't mean we are hiring for it.

It took me five months to get back into a Starbucks.
beetreddwigt [OP]1 points1y ago
Geez that's a long time
Necessary_Low9392 points1y ago
Yes honestly if u don’t give up u will bound to find one. Just keep trying.
beetreddwigt [OP]1 points1y ago
Will do. Thanks for the motivation ❤️

Update: I ended up getting a shift interview and got hired on the spot. Don't settle for less than you are worth 🎉

It took me YEARS to get hired at a Starbucks🙄 and I’m not even at a corporate shop I’m at one inside of a store so I’m “technically” an employee of the store not Starbucks themselves 😂
youjustgottaignite1 points1y ago
it’s a hidden blessing tbh. Current partner here, 26*. It’s a mess right now. Lots of stores want to unionize. Many seasoned partners I talk to from other stores feel so undervalued, including myself. My personal opinion, apply to other places that will appreciate your skillset.
