What’s your unpopular Starbucks barista opinion(s)?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by peepeepoopaccount
Here’s mine:
When it’s not busy, I like making frappuccinos (nothing worse than a caramel crunch frappe during a rush tho 😭)
I don’t want customers to be charged extra for blended drinks. Why does Starbucks get an extra ¢50 for our extra work? We don’t see that money
I like the cookies n cream cake pop
That iced white mocha w SCCF and caramel drizzle is fun to make
Chai is better w regular milk over oat milk
shes-got-issues82 points1y ago
I love making frappes (not during rush ofc) but hate lidding them. I overfilled a CRCF today and couldn’t get the lid on for the life of me. It took me like three whole minutes, an extra cup to support the overflowing drink, three tall lids, and I think I scraped off the whip/driz/crunch two or three times to try again.
I didn’t even get it in the end. I had to ask my new coworker for help 💀 It was a humbling experience
peepeepoopaccount [OP]48 points1y ago
Omg I hate when that happens. Especially when the customer who ordered the drink is watching you make their drink 😭😭
And then of course after every CRCF there’s a huge crunchy mess to clean up
shes-got-issues14 points1y ago
I try so hard to block their sight with my small body 🙈
Responsible_Snow71097 points1y ago
Lmao this comment is so real 😂😂 this is me when on cold bar and people just stare at me waiting for their drinks as if theyre the only ones who ordered at that exact time
Water-is-h2o7 points1y ago
Always nice seeing a tall frap, because you know the lid will go on easy
fistfullofbs3 points1y ago
The dome lids can be the worst! Idk if we had a bad batch or if I was me but for one drink I went through 6 or so lids! I couldn't get the thing on to save my life
[deleted]3 points1y ago
The same thing happened to me on my first day, and the coworker who was trying ended up having it exploded on her. I felt so bad and it was a great introduction to my new coworkers ( note the sarcasm).
horriblyIndecisive1 points1y ago
I hate that! Drive and dto are breathing down my neck when that happens "i need that." So humiliating haha
snowflakenecklace64 points1y ago
i LOVED making shaken espressos. the shake was fun and it was sooooo satisfying when you got that good foam
clumsysilencee9 points1y ago
This!! I’m honestly considering getting a shaker for home because it’s so fun.
snowflakenecklace3 points1y ago
i don’t like drinking them myself (the espresso taste is too strong and i don’t really like foam texture) but had fun making them always
fistfullofbs5 points1y ago
My favorite drink to make! Except when it's topped with cold foam, then it's not as fun 😕
snowflakenecklace3 points1y ago
well that’s because cold foam is the devil.
fistfullofbs3 points1y ago
Pure evil 😈
jordan_leigh52 points1y ago
Idk if it’s still this way, but add-ons and “extra steps” like “blended” or even certain pastry items being warmed up actually add into a data pool that helps determine how many labor hours should be delegated. So a store that sells more frappuccinos or warmed food etc. will have more hours to give its employees. Which is why we would run with like 7 or 8 people on the floor but slower stores would run with only 4 or 5. I would know of stores that would mark pastries to be warmed but then use an ‘ask me’ to designate it not to be warmed just so they would build up their labor hours so they could have more people on the floor at that given time of day to make things easier on them.
peepeepoopaccount [OP]3 points1y ago
Weren’t they still marked as blended before they were a charge tho?
jordan_leigh9 points1y ago
Ya I’m just (hopefully) clarifying that is the benefit received from special request/upcharge type items. That your store builds labor hours which can help with more coverage for shifts.
gingergal-n-dog5 points1y ago
Yes and last summer my store had an insane amount of drinks being blended that wouldn't normally be so, thanks to tik tok. The service charge is what it is and adds more labor back to the store. It was needed. Remember stores are set up differently depending on their age and location. My store for example (15+ yo with original setup) teas and refreshers are located separately from Frappuccino, vsc & blenders. It is more than an extra step to get between stations. It is more work. It is more labor than originally planned when the price of the drink was set up. We have to account for that to be fair to ourselves as a business.
TRoseee3 points1y ago
We’re getting blended cold brews and nitros and blended lattes with the cold foams blended in after they’ve been foamed. It’s crazy.
Left-Needleworker42249 points1y ago
Has nothing to do with being on bar but the job is actually really enjoyable rn. I totally get where most people come from but I love working at Starbucks.
Pillsburyhoeboy1917 points1y ago
I'm on my final day of training tomorrow and love it so far, coming from a line cook job at a very busy restaurant starbucks is pretty simple so far but also the God dang dome lids are awful.
Side note I'm really liking adding raspberry syrup to cold foam and double blending it over any of the refreshers once I'm at my caffeine limit
b99__throwaway7 points1y ago
pro tip tho buddy: the refreshers still have caffeine
Pillsburyhoeboy195 points1y ago
Thats good to know, i mostly just can't be drinking another quad shaken espresso at the end of my shift lol I'm/trying/ to ween myself off of the line cook caffeine addiction of 3+ bangs a day tho
gingergal-n-dog1 points1y ago
Decaf shots are great for this
peepeepoopaccount [OP]10 points1y ago
I love working here it’s stressful sometimes and I wish we got paid more but the job itself is fun
Broad-Flounder-49712 points1y ago
This. I thoroughly enjoy the fast pace and I love making coffee.
dallizzlee4 points1y ago
Me too. I’ve been with the siren a year and I still love it.
roryascher2738 points1y ago
1: every single refresher we sell right now is literally PUTRID. 2: frappucinos are indeed fun when it’s not busy, but during peak and you order a frappucino i want to die. 3: why does frap roast smell like rotting soy sauce?? 4: starbucks be up charging blending drinks and other stuff now but we ain’t getting raises so ??? 5: the cookie dough cake pop was elite and needs to come back. 6: the morning buns???? FIRE i miss them!! 7: anyone remember the cold brew whipped cream? it was so yummy i don’t understand why it was sent away :( 8: the entire holiday season food and drink selections are absolutely the bomb.com, especially the toasted white chocolate mocha and the cranberry bliss bars!!! 9: i miss when we used oatly oatmilk. now we use some weird off brand oatmilk that leaves a weird taste and texture in your mouth and i hate it i don’t even order coffees anymore because of it! 10: for such an inclusive company, we should really have more vegan options. not vegan myself but have lots of vegan friends and they’re very sad at their choices.
GreenTourmaline1310 points1y ago
Cold brew whipped cream. Gosh that was amazing :)
peepeepoopaccount [OP]3 points1y ago
What is cold brew whipped cream?
Ok_Beautiful_40563 points1y ago
In 2017/18 we had whipped cream for a certain caramel Frappuccino that later became the caramel ribbon crunch we make today. It was made with dark caramel and an ounce or two of cold brew and it was so smooth and so good 😩
b99__throwaway4 points1y ago
!! 3 !! yes!! i say this all the time it’s disgusting
roryascher272 points1y ago
it is literally so nasty
galaxydisco171 points1y ago
My store still uses oatly, that's weird that your store stopped. Oatly gives me that filmy taste.
roryascher272 points1y ago
swear to gods, they just change it every couple weeks. we had oatly for a while, then to this barista blends one, then to pacific foods oatmilk, then to silk oatmilk, then chobani oatmilk, now we have the dream oat beverage. my favorite was the chobani one personally!
galaxydisco171 points1y ago
Hmm, chobani is my favorite, I got it once due to an instacart incident ,it was the only few unsweetened oatmilks that was unavailable.
roryascher271 points1y ago
i loved it so much having it at work!!! but unfortunately they don’t sell it in stores around here so i’ll have to start ordering online!
EliMinivan26 points1y ago
Nothing we sell is worth buying
Alternative_Exam372325 points1y ago
Pumpkin spice should be a year round thing. If you order anything matcha I gag a little Oat milk is ass Frapps are fun Cranberry bliss bars are the best and should be year round
Lanky_Rip_54149 points1y ago
The matcha grosses me out to no end. Blah
Alternative_Exam37232 points1y ago
I’m can’t handle it 😂 it’s soooooo nasty
peepeepoopaccount [OP]5 points1y ago
I love pumpkin spice I’ve only worked here for the summer but I can’t wait for the fall drinks
Alternative_Exam37233 points1y ago
I’m so excited😂 Sadly we don’t get free drinks at my store 😩😩
peepeepoopaccount [OP]3 points1y ago
Wait really? Are you at a licensed store?
Alternative_Exam37233 points1y ago
Is that a store inside another store? If so, then yes.
lewabwee16 points1y ago
We should sell actual unsweetened matcha/chai. The stuff we sell isn’t even actual sweetened matcha/chai. I don’t know what that crap is. It should be higher quality and the sweetener should be separate.
Ok_Beautiful_40561 points1y ago
There used to be a lightly sweetened chai alongside the regular chai for whatever reason and a less sweet frap base 🤷🏻♀️
lewabwee1 points1y ago
Yeah, my store wouldn’t even keep a backup of the Oprah chai (pretty sure the Oprah chai was the lightly sweetened boxed chai). We’d open a whole ass box whenever someone ordered it.
I didn’t drink chai back then so I don’t remember how it was. I also never drink fraps but I heard the light base was nasty. One of the reasons sweetener is so popular is it covers up a lot of ugly flavors.
Ok_Beautiful_40562 points1y ago
To this day I have people ask for light base and it’s like once every two months but still???? How many times to I have to tell you it’s discontinued please listen
bubblecumpink15 points1y ago
The iced white mocha! That’s my go to way to make it but w blonde ristretto shots
peepeepoopaccount [OP]11 points1y ago
I personally think it’s a bit too sweet for my tastes but I love adding the caramel drizzle on the foam cause it’s so pretty
bubblecumpink3 points1y ago
No you’re right, it is sweet that’s why I stopped drinking it for a while or maybe it’s placebo but the blonde ristretto shots take away some sweetness cuz of the caffeine levels
peepeepoopaccount [OP]3 points1y ago
I have to try that and w less white mocha too. I always thought it looked good but the one time I tried it it was too sweet.
rockishOBOI2 points1y ago
I feel like blonde shots are more sweet and creamier than the other shots
0x52and1x5212 points1y ago
I don’t think Starbucks should allow partners to use the disposable cups for partner beverages. Instead, I’d like them to give Partners a credit for one reusable cup every 6 months. Seeing my coworkers use 6 cups in a single shift is soooo frustrating 🙃
buzzy90007 points1y ago
We were told last year to not use disposables but it hasn't been reinforced and within a month or so everyone had slipped back, some people still try to use their own cups but if they forget it isn't even mentioned. I work in a franchise in the UK with a company that owns other brands so I don't think it was a Starbucks specific policy.
diarrheajar11 points1y ago
I, too, hate all the additional charges. I see so many posts whenever corporate adds a new charge (like the extra 50¢ for blending), and baristas are like “yes!! Finally!!” But I don’t get it. We don’t see any of the money, and we’d have to do the extra work either way. All it’s doing is putting more money in the pockets of the higher ups. Plus, even though we get discounts, we are still paying for all the extras when we’re off the clock.
dallizzlee15 points1y ago
.60 for caramel drizzle on top and another .60 for caramel drizzle around the cup? No.
diarrheajar4 points1y ago
Seriously!! It’s ridiculous.
badatlife159 points1y ago
I get this, but always hope it will deter at least some customers from being extremely extra. I don’t mind the caramel drizzle/ex caramel drizzle, bc I like my drinks with that. But blending a shaken refresher then adding cold foam, customers need to be charged for their foolishness.
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
With the blended thing, i saw another comment where someone was wondering why Starbucks would charge for blending something but not charge for when people want no ice since the no ice option use up more products. So it got me thinking like from their perspective, why would they charge for blending something but not for no ice drinks? Not that I'm saying I disagree with the blending charge but I'm just thinking like from their perspective why would they charge for that and not no ice drinks
Ok_Beautiful_40564 points1y ago
Another user said it’s to accurately allocate labor hours to the individual stores and I think that makes sense. I HATE HATE HATE blending refreshers or anything else not typically blended I’d like more hours to blend things thanks Starbucks haha
Responsible_Snow71091 points1y ago
Lol yea i do like hours as well so i am fine with that but it got me thinking when i saw someones comment that asked about charging for blending non blended drinks but not charging for no ice drinks. Would we also het more labor hours if starbucks charged for no ice?
foxygrandma10110 points1y ago
A lot of people keep putting extra caramel drizzle and vanilla sweet cream cold foam in their iced white mochas and matcha green teas and they need to stay FAR FAR away from me
dallizzlee10 points1y ago
I didn’t know the cookies and cream was controversial lol. I think that one is hella good
peepeepoopaccount [OP]3 points1y ago
A lot of people on this sub said it was gross
galaxydisco171 points1y ago
It tastes like Hershey's cookies and creme bar.
dallizzlee1 points1y ago
Yesss my favorite candy bar haha
coffee-and-chillll9 points1y ago
I actually feel incredibly lucky to work here. Amazing benefits, free drinks/food, and it lets me feel creative in my own way. It’s the only job I’ve ever had that truly makes me feel proud of myself about how hard I work and how much I’ve learned. I also struggle with depression and going to work really helps me get out of my head and interact with others.
It’s not perfect, no job is, but this job really has helped me in so many ways and I’m very thankful for that ✨
Ok_Beautiful_40564 points1y ago
I feel the same way about working at Starbucks but slightly different. It’s one of the only jobs where I enjoy the work I’m doing and if I cannot do it I can switch to a much different “job” and still be helping my coworkers and customers in a way that fulfills me. Maybe it’s the anxiety, maybe it’s the depression, maybe it’s my adhd, but I have more good days than bad. The bad days are usually because of non work related events too.
coffee-and-chillll2 points1y ago
I totally relate. The bad days for me usually are connected to things going on outside of work. Overall the job is great :)
aspiringgrandpa8 points1y ago
if i can’t ring it up on the POS then i shouldn’t have to do it (customization wise)
peepeepoopaccount [OP]8 points1y ago
There’s a lady who orders a venti Frappuccino and requests extra on the side. Like she wants everything in the blender and wants any extra that doesn’t fit in the cup in a separate cup. Idk why it makes me kinda irritated bc like why tf you want this disgusting ass Frappuccino so bad?? And yeah we have to manually type it
killjoy04568 points1y ago
i still don’t get why they aren’t charging extra for light ice or no ice. like that’s costing a good amount of money in product as opposed to a blending charge.
Water-is-h2o7 points1y ago
If I’m not on bar and we’re not too busy, pour-overs are fun
Ok_Beautiful_40563 points1y ago
I once accidentally made the most divine blonde roast pour over on accident (aka idk what my technique was and I cannot replicate it so far) also I can’t remember the coffee I used 😭
IcyColdBrew2 points1y ago
I have this desperate desire to tell people about iced pourovers. They are completely superior over iced americanos. So much stronger and tastier, even an iced decaf one. But for the sake of baristas everywhere and safety from any directed animosity, I stay silent. Lol
galaxydisco172 points1y ago
That's how I feel about iced London fog tea lattes especially blended ones.
Necessary_Low9397 points1y ago
I rather make fraps than any shaken drinks
Beautiful-Director7 points1y ago
I dont think its an unpopular opinion but frap roast is gross and I hate making it 💀 I dont think drinks that are already blended get charged the ¢50 to have it double blended but I could be wrong. On August 1st all of our raises go into effect so technically we will see it soon. Might be overrated but my fav drink is the strawberry acai w/ lemonade
devilsreject49266 points1y ago
I don't like coffee bc it doesn't do anything for me. I drink water all day 😬
Ok_Beautiful_40565 points1y ago
I appreciate “regular” cold foam being removed from the register. Literally no one wants nonfat cold foam. I used to put vanilla in it before VSCCF was a thing.
logiwave4 points1y ago
I like my job
heartofgears3 points1y ago
I dont think customers should be charged for "light ice" at all we definitely rip ppl off with our ice. But we should charge for "no ice."
blackplastic973 points1y ago
The strawberry cake pop with the all time best cake pop
The the chicken sausage bacon biscuit was the best sandwich ever
Espresso Lemonades fucking rock
Starbucks was my all time favorite job and I was treated really well there
awesomechief9893 points1y ago
Tell me why that blended thing just smacked me so hard, u right about the pay
kittykaty142 points1y ago
My unpopular opinion: I'm grateful to be working at Starbucks
I'm a single mom (he just turned 1) and I'm apart of the Starbucks College Achievement Plan. They've given me hope for my future and the ability to work, go to school, be a mom, and not worry about crippling debt in the future. There was a point where I didn't think that would ever be attainable. Even though I'm at a store that does $100,000+ sales and it gets crazy sometimes, I could never hate the job because I know I have a future thanks to them.
AndrewtheRey2 points1y ago
This is something I resonate with. So many people at my starbucks were doing ASU and it is a life changer for so many. As a matter of fact, one of the SSV’s graduated in May and she has found a job paying $80k a year, which is monumental for someone in a rust belt town plagued by drugs and unemployment.
leeblissy2 points1y ago
maybe not barista specific but. my god why do we have to treat customers like they're toddlers?
if I'm busy doing something or even just in a bad mood or smth the last thing I want to be doing is chatting with a customer, so why do my shifts insist that I have to? because they'll get bored at the drive thru???? dude they're usually adults or theyre with other people they don't need me to ask "how's your day going? doing anything interesting today?" every minute I'm on the window. they came to starbucks to get coffee, not to be entertained.
I don't understand why I have to hold their hand through the waiting process because miss karen might get impatient.
don't get me wrong sometimes I DO have the free time and I AM in the mood and in that case I enjoy chatting up some of our customers. I have favorite regulars same as everyone else that im more than happy to talk to, but i also know if theres something better i could be doing and i also really dont feel like talking to them for whatever reason then my conversation is just gonna be awkward at best.
honeybunchesofmia2 points1y ago
matcha is disgusting. why would i wanna drink grass flavored milk? 🤢
Decent_Wall13802 points1y ago
i moved from a hell store to a lovely neighborhood store and it’s gets so slow sometimes. i love making super complicated drinks when it’s slow, especially if it’s a cafe order so i can talk to the customer. it makes me sad the company is becoming fast food because the cafe environment is really nice but i guess i’ll go to a little indie coffee shop instead
I_Love-Lasagna2 points1y ago

cold bar is the best bar
Ok_Investigator43141 points1y ago
I hate making anything with cold foam like why are people so obsessed with it?? especially on refreshers!?!?
floofxs21 points1y ago
I only like matcha latte cut with hot water like a chai. No one says anything negative but they almost all hate the matcha anyway.
I liked the golden ginger drink too.
Honey citrus mint is disgusting because steamed lemonade reminds me of the consistency of mucous.
peepeepoopaccount [OP]1 points1y ago
Before I worked at Starbucks I used to really like the honey citrus but I haatteee making it 😅
