how would u make this/what does this mean(i.redd.it)

once again, the app needs to stop letting people order decaf cold brew and iced coffee. i understand some people want the espresso taste without the extra caffeine but we have no way of knowing that!
victorious_gem42 points1y ago
I work in jersey and my store has deacf ice coffee... but we don't brew decaf hot coffee
acnh122217 points1y ago
Same here in NYC. I mean, we’ve had a decaf iced coffee shortage lately so we don’t have it now, but we usually do
Ordinary-Theory-8289-114 points1y ago
Does your store not carry decaf iced coffee? It’s available at any Starbucks I’ve been to
StrangeAfternoon74 points1y ago
They were giving you a decaf americano, or iced decaf pour over, but tbh I’ve never done that for a customer.
pfooty34 points1y ago
Not necessarily! When I worked in Massachusetts we had actual decaf iced coffee that we brewed every morning. But now that I’m in California we don’t have it. All depends on your area.
imeanitpeanut18 points1y ago
In Massachusetts too, and we brew actual decaf iced coffee too. It might be because iced coffee in general sells better in New England year round than the rest of the country.
nicolelynnejones7 points1y ago
also in MA, we have decaf iced coffee every day and that’s what we used for 1/2 decaf cold brew orders
nicolelynnejones5 points1y ago
I think all or most stores in the Northeast have decaf iced
If I had to guess it’s probably due to the year round iced coffee thing that stemmed from Dunks. Like 80% of our sales year round are cold coffee. We get a lot of decaf iced coffee sales
StarWolf6482 points1y ago
In my old store (NC) we had decaf before 11 o’clock, but would dump decaf and blonde after that time
Ordinary-Theory-8289-7 points1y ago
Every store in my area Carries it lol love all the downvotes 😂
leoperidot163 points1y ago
Lol, literally earlier today I gave a customer who ordered decaf iced a decaf iced americano, only to discover that our pitcher of decaf iced was just behind the iced coffee thing anyway. We brew decaf iced every morning when we open but not a lot of people order it. I’m in Massachusetts.
cpv_913 points1y ago
Completely area specific. I've worked in South Florida for over 18 yrs and we've never brewed decaf Iced coffee and we stopped brewing decaf pike about 5 or 6 years ago because we used to throw so much of it out. If someone orders decaf it's either an americano or a pour over.
croissantboyy1 points1y ago
my store literally brews a two liter pitcher of decaf iced coffee every day (we barely go through it but it's still a thing). it comes pre-ground in a similar bag to the regular iced coffee except it's smaller and has a blue strip on it. the reason your store doesn't have it could be due to location, or your manager and ssvs don't think you sell enough to warrant ordering it.
udderlymoovelous1 points1y ago
I work in NY, we have actual brewed decaf iced coffee! We don’t brew decaf hot for most of the day though, so people who order it get a hot decaf americano
Ordinary-Theory-8289-20 points1y ago
I work at Starbucks dude. We have decaf iced coffee at every store in my area lol
taebunz12 points1y ago
You guys have it because it’s actually purchased enough by customers in your area. I live in south Jersey and my district stopped getting large bags decaf coffee and ice coffee over a year ago bc no one buys it. This only decaf we will receive is the small retail pikes
Neither-Lab74902 points1y ago
idk why you're being downvoted, in my area it's not uncommon for high volume DT stores or flagship stores to have a pitcher or two of decaf ice coffee prepped. but i've certainly never heard of decaf cold brew lol
[deleted]2 points1y ago
[deleted]
nicolelynnejones1 points1y ago
Idk why you’re being downvoted, maybe it’s just a northeast store thing but I’ve never worked at a store without a pitcher of decaf IC with that brown lid on it
Edit: now I’m getting downvoted for literally telling the truth lmfao. some parts of the US brew decaf iced every day. it’s regional standard.
LY-_-0 points1y ago
What store is it? Is it not in the US?
Vilali1 points1y ago
Some stores do, some don't. It ultimately depends on how much your store sells. I have probably been asked like 10 times for decaf iced coffee in the two years I've worked here.
anotheroneig240 points1y ago
It’s like whoever made the sbux app has never worked or been a barista at sbux lol
cookiemonstah8751 points1y ago
I mean, they probably haven't. It has to be a team of developers. Maybe some have worked for Starbucks as baristas in the past, but it likely had very little to do with getting their current job
Seraphim_Faye12 points1y ago
Actually yeah a lot of corporate has never been a barista. There is a SSV at my store that used to work in the labs at cooperate helping make the new drinks.
shipssiren189 points1y ago
It means, they're getting an empty cup at mobile order pick up
lilminch52 points1y ago
this is the only correct answer
Minute-General-20901 points1y ago
😂😂
LycaenopsPictus81 points1y ago
I'd make it as an iced americano (Maybe ristretto) with the fixings of a nitro sweet cream, and have it at the handoff bar to explain to them we can't decaf coldbrew, but I did the closest decaf option + what it is.
Necessary_Low93952 points1y ago
Customer, if u want a decaf cold brew, it defeats the purpose of a cold brew. Like come on.
-Zispy3 points1y ago
You’re saying cold brews purpose is only to deliver caffeine? Lol
badatlife152 points1y ago
Yes, nitro cold brew is one of the highest caffeine content available it literally defeats the purpose.
Necessary_Low9394 points1y ago
No nitro and reg has the same amount of caffeine. It just has the nitro in it.
I replied to that other guy this: The definition of cold brew, according to Starbucks (I would know because I worked when it first came out and was still using toddies to make it) brew and seep grounded coffee beans overnight with in large amount so there is more caffeine and also more flavorful.
badatlife151 points1y ago
Yeah i realized that as I was starting to write that. But just went with it, but like you said it’s definitely more caffeinated than iced coffee, therefore, I would say it’s pretty fair to say it’s purpose is to be highly caffeinated.
-Zispy1 points1y ago
I know I love the nitro but I can only have decaf now :(
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
No. The definition of cold brew, according to Starbucks (I would know because I worked when it first came out and was still using toddies to make it) brew and seep grounded coffee beans overnight with in large amount so there is more caffeine and also more flavorful.
-Zispy-4 points1y ago
Yes, lol but you could make it with decaf
Necessary_Low9392 points1y ago
No u joke, theres no point in explaining it to u. The process of making it is so the drink can have MORE caffeine and coffee flavor. So why would I make it decaf? there are also no more decaf hot or iced coffee beans. There’s only a decaf espresso beans where u can make americanos which is ur best bet dummy.
Assiqtaq51 points1y ago
Tall Vanilla Sweet Cream Nitro Cold Brew, decaf, why is this even orderable?
dontlook4tme14 points1y ago
this happens pretty frequently at my store and i think what happens is customers are clicking on espresso options and choosing decaf under the assumption that it makes the drink decaf? bc they never actually choose the amount of shots they want so i just assume they’re not paying attention to what they’re ordering
Assiqtaq2 points1y ago
Our store (kiosk) just got mobile ordering yesterday. Today it wasn't working. Not looking forward to tomorrow. Also the number of food stamp customers who were shocked they could not longer pay with food stamps was not funny.
cadmus189035 points1y ago
Call it out as "Kinda Decaf Cold Brew" and you aren't wrong either way
piIIowtalk23 points1y ago
Ngl I would have done a vanilla nitro with a decaf shot.
here_forthefun8 points1y ago
Usually it appears as “single” when they order a shot of espresso, which isn’t the case here so I wouldn’t do that
piIIowtalk8 points1y ago
Well if they mobile ordered it they only show you the decaf button under the options for what kind of expresso roast/number of shots you want, so that’s how I would have interpreted it
here_forthefun7 points1y ago
It can appear as “decaf” without them actually paying for a shot of decaf espresso. Something Starbucks needs to fix on the app. For example, you can make a chai appear as decaf espresso without actually paying for a shot of decaf espresso
dfresh3000-1 points1y ago
When it appears as single, you know not to do blonde or decaf because the default is signature (but it doesn’t say signature). It’s a shot of decaf espresso because there is no decaf cold brew
here_forthefun2 points1y ago
Except they didn’t pay for a shot of decaf espresso. If you have the app, look it up on there. You can do decaf espresso but unless it says decaf and single, it wouldn’t get a shot of decaf espresso. I would wait to make it until the customer got there and ask, which you would do anyways since it’s a nitro
dfresh3000-1 points1y ago
They did not pay for decaf nitro - that’s not an option. They paid for a shot of decaf espresso - because that is an option
7beforeminutes52 points1y ago
Me too!
jayx110 points1y ago
I feel like this is the only logical conclusion
jazzysoranio18 points1y ago
I’m sure whatever the answer is, the answer from corporate would be “it’s your responsibility to make the moment right.” Forget actually taking the time up there in corporate to go through the POS system and see if some things don’t make sense and need to be updated.
LY-_-11 points1y ago
I was told to put a decaf shot and write a note saying it was a decaf shot added and the cold brew is still regular
here_forthefun2 points1y ago
I would wait to ask when they get there, especially since it’s a nitro. They also didn’t pay for a shot of decaf espresso so I would make sure they aren’t expecting the whole thing to be decaf
BaristaBabe132 points1y ago
This is what I would have done.
peepeepoopaccount10 points1y ago
I wouldn’t. NCB makes me so damn wired
CyzophyTacos7339 points1y ago
When people ask for a decaf cold brew... I tell them we don't have decaf cold brew, but I can make them an iced decaf Americano instead. Especially when they want the vanilla sweet cream cold brew... I offer to make an iced decaf American, with vanilla and the vanilla sweet cream.
But nitro is unfortunately not one we can make decaf of.
Number1Barooista9 points1y ago
I would tell them I can't make a decaf cold brew. Offer an iced decaf Americano with sweet cream Cold foam
[deleted]9 points1y ago
[deleted]
badbaristuh23 points1y ago
unless the label specifies a number of shots, the customer didn’t pay for an add shot. This label implies decaf nitro which we straight up cannot make. I’d leave it unmade and let the customer know tbh
Responsible_Snow71091 points1y ago
>unless the label specifies a number of shots, the customer didn’t pay for an add shot.
Its interesting u said this and i have a question and was wondering if u may kno anything about it. So theres this customer that sometimes orders mobile from my store and she gets a venti caramel ribbon crunch frapp with almond milk and a bunch of other mods. On the sticker, i always see it says "blond" and never understood why and i asked my shift supervisor and she looked up their order somewhere on the POS and it showed no charge next to the "blond" modification so she told me not to put a blond shot in the frapp since customer hasnt paid for it. So im curious as to why thats able to be chosen?
badbaristuh1 points1y ago
It’s another one of those useless modifications. I generally cross off “blonde” on these labels, or “decaf” on vanilla bean fraps that come through because it simply doesn’t apply. Same as above, neither drink has espresso in the standard drink build which means the customer is not paying for the resources of pulling an espresso shot for their drink. I don’t mean to be a stickler all the time, but pulling shots takes close to half a minute and Starbucks already wrings so much labor out of you guys that it’s not worth trying to accommodate a customer who is either deliberately breaking the rules for a free shot or unsure what they are ordering — at which point you can have a convo so their order makes sense to both of you.
Responsible_Snow71091 points1y ago
But other people were saying that she might want blond espresso to replace the frapp roast and they said thats free of charge
KenansCloud1 points1y ago
I think you’re supposed to replace the frap roast with a blonde shot
Responsible_Snow71091 points1y ago
Ohhh is that what that means? Because it just said "blond" and nothing else on the sides of it so it confused me and i got even more confused when my shift looked up the order on the POS and didnt see a charge next to it and told me to ignore it since its not paid for? It was weird. If it has to be replaced in place of the frapp roast, i would assume my shift would know that considering shes been with starbucks for 15 years but idk i guess there are some things maybe even vets dont kno because it may not be something that she has dealt with much but idk. I just felt bad always taking her advice and ignoring the "blond" modification cuz now the customer hasnt been getting what theyve been wanting
Necessary_Low9396 points1y ago
Nah they want the whole thing decaf and nowhere indicates shots
martinifather5 points1y ago
I’ve had coworkers tell me to put a decaf shot, but they aren’t paying for a shot unless it says single. The app just gives the decaf option for no reason. I just cross the decaf off the sticker and explain it to the customer when they get there and change the drink if they request it
Helyra5 points1y ago
I just wait till they get there and explain it to them.
No waste of product and you can get a nice customer connection going on.
jklmnopedy5 points1y ago
It means the customer is an idiot? 🤔🤷♀️
What did you end up making?
sysiphusrockstar4 points1y ago
Means you wait for their goofy ass to get there. Hard to believe the app will even allow this.
Wonderful-Put-59724 points1y ago
It means they have no business ordering for themselves! But I would put the label on an empty cup and ask what they actually want (if they even know!).
philosopher_cat_lady3 points1y ago
It's impossible to make that drink
nolambb [OP]3 points1y ago
we just waited til they got there bc we do that when anyone orders nitro anyways so it doesn’t go flat. i was in the back when they came so i have no idea what ended up happening.
laurenhasgerms2 points1y ago
Just the nitrogen in the cup w/ VSC.
RubySapphireSage2 points1y ago
I wish they would base it off regionals , like some places has decaf iced coffee then in those areas they should have the button open to that door but if not it causes so much confusion and delay
FightingDrag0ns2 points1y ago
I just looked at the app, and there isn’t an option to choose decaf, but there is an option to add a decaf shot so that’s probably what they selected and then it printed out looking like that. Knowing that, that’s what I’d do. Having not checked, because I like to get creative, I probably would’ve put equal parts ice and water into a steaming pitcher, pulled decaf espresso shots, added those to the pitcher and steam that to about 50°-60° and then pour it over a tall cup of ice. I know that’s doing too much, but I like to make it nice. That creates an aerated americano that layers itself and cascades like a nitro cold brew but uses espresso instead.
evviiieeee2 points1y ago
this is when u stick it by the mobile orders and wait till they get there to explain and ask if they want something else
thedevvylee1 points1y ago
From an app standpoint I think they add that under shots so maybe they added a decaf shot? That’s the only place I could see that would let you put decaf as an option. So maybe they think it makes it all decaf. If it was me I’d add a decaf shot and just explain to them when they get there hey our cold brew doesn’t come decaf.
Spiritual-Pen17681 points1y ago
I think they just want 1 decaf shot
kikuuq1 points1y ago
Realistically I would probably hold onto the sticker to ask when the customer gets there, but its probably just made the same with an additional shot of decaf in it
frient19951 points1y ago
I’d kinda make it decaf 🤷♂️
forbiddenbrownies1 points1y ago
i would keep the sticker at handoff, and then when the customer arrived i would let them know that I don't have decaf cold brew, and i would offer them the next best thing: a steamed americano
what is this you ask? well, if you steam/aerate an iced americano you will end up with a drink that tastes and very closely replicates nitro cold brew, cascade and all. it's my go to recommendation when the nitro machine is down. it's a good substitute and offers a nitro-like drink but without the issues presented by actual nitro in this situation.
other than that, there's not much else. normally what happens is you have to explain to a customer that they selected 'decaf' under the "shot prep" menu on mobile, which doesn't technically affect cold brew or other drinks not containing shots. one could easily argue that they should understand that they are still getting cold brew, just adding a nullified label that per standard of the drink means and affects nothing. however, one could also argue that the customer may not understand the app fully and therefore it's a baristas responsibility to make the moment right. i respect both sides, but at the end of the day the goal is to make the customer's expereince the best it can be!
(also in case anyone wants to try this iced Americano concoction simply make a tall iced americano to standard with light ice, pour into a steaming pitcher, aerate until all of the ice is melted, and pour into a venti iced cup. it's actually really good ngl!)
kaefeen1 points1y ago
add a decaf shot lmao
SqzHerLimes1 points1y ago
Not as bad as the peraon who wanted cold brew hot😑
blinykoshka1 points1y ago
if i had to make SOMETHING without asking i’d make an iced decaf americano with sweet cream.
Tiny-Focus49371 points1y ago
Do everything normal and add a decaf shot
StarbucksStarbitch1 points1y ago
That’s a decaf shot bud.
RenuhhBunn1 points1y ago
Q
saltynerdy1 points1y ago
The whole point of nitro is how fast and hard the caffeine hits 😂 even if this was possible why would someone order it.
freetofeelfree1 points1y ago
Anyone else’s store wait until the mobile order customers arrive to pour the nitro in the cup?
[deleted]1 points1y ago
[deleted]
iretto_yt_wrestlegod1 points1y ago
put a shot of decaf espresso in it?
kaidariel271 points1y ago
I'd check your mop system! There might be a decaf cold brew that accidentally got turned on
darkwolf5231 points1y ago
Iced americano away
zeewur4 points1y ago
No because then this customer will show up at another location asking for this and when they are told it isn't a thing they will be like "WeLL tHe oThEr LOcATiOn I gO tO doEs iT"
darkwolf5231 points11m ago
How did I see this now? But point taken
TwiggyRich0 points1y ago
Id assume they just want a decaf shot in it since that's how they would select it on the app
MasterMischievous0 points1y ago
I’d give them a tall nitro with sweet cream and a shot of decaf
StrawbaerryJay0 points1y ago
decaf americano. no one has to know and they obviously won’t be able to tell the difference. 💁
sani_anra0 points1y ago
even if they knew they wanted a decaf shot added, they probably didn’t put “single” to avoid paying for it. which is still annoying and confusing for us baristas.
pixiecrappe0 points1y ago
I’d just add a decaf shot
Jasreha0 points1y ago
Talk nitro cold brew with a single decaf shot, maybe?
SeaworthinessGold8460 points1y ago
Iced decaf americano with sweet cream foam is how I’d make it lol
zeewur3 points1y ago
A nitro VSC cold brew doesn't get foam unless specified?
TH00TN00T0 points1y ago
Decaf air-icano lol?
PerspectiveCapable98-2 points1y ago
I do iced coffee 🤷🏻♀️
Ordinary-Theory-8289-22 points1y ago
Just make a sweet cream cold brew with decaf iced coffee? Cmon people put your thinking caps on, not that hard lol
5AV1OR19 points1y ago
That’s not cold brew nor is it nitro… put your thinking cap on and recognize that this is an item we can not make therefore it shouldn’t be able to be ordered.
Ordinary-Theory-8289-13 points1y ago
You think this customer will be able to tell the difference between cold brew or decaf iced coffee? They obviously wanted the same kind of drink as a sccb but decaf. Closest you could get to that would be to use decaf iced coffee instead of cold brew. Sorry I missed the “n” so didn’t realize they ordered nitro.
Aurora_Boreallis9 points1y ago
Most stores don’t have decaf cold brew or decaf iced coffee.
Ordinary-Theory-82890 points1y ago
Mine does 🤷♂️
nolambb [OP]5 points1y ago
we don’t have decaf coffee or iced coffee. put ur thinking cap on…
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points1y ago
My area Caries decaf iced coffee 🤷♂️
here_forthefun3 points1y ago
Cmon, not all stores have decaf iced coffee. It varies by region. Iced coffee and nitro have different textures too
Ordinary-Theory-82891 points1y ago
Okay that’s fair, but not sure why I would assume not all stores have decaf iced coffee when every store in my district does lol. I figured that most others would carry it aswell
