Mishap about cashing myself out.(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by readinginthestorm
For context I've been with Starbucks almost 2 years. I've worked at two different stores in that time and at my first store people cashed themselves out all the time and all money was always accounted for so theft was never an issue. Today I bought some chips with my tips and I took out the change and put it in my pocket. My new ASM came over and told me I couldn't do that. I explained to her that I had never known that but from now on I'll make sure not to. I even gave her the receipt so she could check it and she asked to see the change I took out which I did because I thought that made sense to check if it all matched up. She then demanded to see the cash I took out of the register but I tried telling her I didn't take any out and the cash I had was my tips. She look liked she didn't believe me and so i told her I didn't take anything. She scoffed and said whatever and then went to talk to my SM. I understand if you're not allowed to check yourself out but it was all I ever knew because like I said my old store did it all the time but I think she could have handled it better instead of accusing me of stealing right? I also told my other coworkers that I get along with and they were absolutely shocked she treated me that way and said it wasn't okay even if I did something wrong and she could have handled it better. What does everyone else think about this?

So these situations is why I always, always, always mobile order if I’m doing a transaction. It saves my ass in case something happens. Only time I’ll approach the register is if I’m using a reward for a cup or something (or I’m off the clock) otherwise it’s someone else ringing me up. And always have a receipt.

Be careful. The thing about these rules is that like, many of them get bent all the time but even so they’re still always there kind of hanging over your head and if a manager were to ever be annoyed by you, that rule that’s always ignored is still a rule on paper and can be used to get you in major trouble.

I never handled cash when I was checking myself out. I'd occasionally use a SBUX card by swiping it or entering the card number, but never touched the cash drawer.
Technically I don't think you're even supposed to use their register for your own transactions, another partner should be ringing you up. Obviously some stores were lax on that, but it's the rules. Just don't do it again if anything.
