Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

My whole district just switched their hours of operation (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CoffeeChesirecat
to 4:30 am. My availability starts at 5:30. Anyone else going through something like this? This change also affects my other job so now I'm losing a second source of income. Why are they like this?

same here. starting as soon as we are getting our raises. my store opens at 5am currently, but will begin to open at 4am on August 1st

why so early? i would actually vomit if i had to be in my store at 3:30 am
LumpyAloe 2 points 1y ago
I’m an opener and my store is also making that change. Now it makes sense why we’re getting raises at the same time as the change—it’s to justify making us work earlier/later
overturned23 6 points 1y ago
i predict that they’re gonna give us our raises then cut our hours so we are making the same amount of money
LumpyAloe 1 points 1y ago
Sounds about right 🙃
BatWeary 1 points 1y ago
one of my coworkers lives an hour away…he’d literally have to leave at 2:30am what the fuck
overturned23 4 points 1y ago
i don’t know why stores are doing this. my store actually pushed back our opening time to 6 am instead of 5:30… meanwhile another location in the district that has less business then us pushed their opening time from 6 am to 5 am

"Why are they like this?"

Money.

If your store opens and you only get 5 customers in the first half-hour, Starbucks is losing money. They gotta pay you, pay to have the store open for that 30-minutes, etc. etc.

If your store opens and y'all are immediately doing 15, 20... 25 customers in the first half-hour, they suspect they could be losing out on customers/revenue by not being open 30-minutes before that.

Yes, we got raises, but the company has to find a way to pay for those raises by making sure your store is only open for times it's making the most money.

Side note, I love telling customers that complain about the higher prices now that the price-increase is due in part to Starbucks paying its employees better (see also: still not adequate) wages. Just to watch their "surprised pikachu" face.

Bhahaha I'm going to use that on the next customer that complains about prices because it's true. I love the work but hate that society has us places so low on the totem pole. It's even more insulting with the new hours.

I would be more on board with this if I saw justification. We don't have that kind of traffic that early. Or at least that's my prediction based on our area and what I see at 6 AM. Well, it sucks. I just got promoted and agreed on a 5:30 start time. At least this is collective suffering?
reddjedett 2 points 1y ago
Yes, collective suffering. My SM just informed us of our store hours change, as well. We open at 5am now. In August, it will be 6am. I'm usually the opening SSV. There's tons of stuff to do in the morning to prepare for 7am peak--including, MOST IMPORTANTLY, running some breaks for partners.

I can't imagine only having one hour to do it in next month. :(
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 1 points 1y ago
That's rough and also so weird that your store is scaling back. This doesn't seem to have any rhyme or reason. I can't wait to talk to my SM to begin to try to understand.

Today was my first open alone so I don't have much of a concept of time and don't have a routine down yet.
gingergal-n-dog 3 points 1y ago
My sm said she's waiting on word for our hours to change also. 430 open, 9 close. Ugh. Not looking forward to the 4am opening.

I left Starbucks in February of 2021, but I just found out my old store is changing their hours of operation from 6 AM- 8PM to 4:30AM-10 PM, like WHY?
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I'm pretty sure they just hate us.
flutise 2 points 1y ago
Its opposite for my store. We used to open at 5 am, (get to the store at 4:30 to open), now we are opening at 5:30 and getting there at 5. Also closing an hour earlier. So now we have less hours available and less time to get everything set up in the morning/end of the day.
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 1 points 1y ago
That also sucks.
fuwaldah 1 points 1y ago
How does this affect your other job?
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I petsit all throughout the year and use that first hour of the day to make a morning stop.
fuwaldah 1 points 1y ago
So tell your manager you won't be able to work that early.
CoffeeChesirecat [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I'm one of two opening ssvs unfortunately. I kind of have to.
Starbucks_IVF_MAMA 4 points 1y ago
That's a problem, it's not your responsibility. They're gonna have to train more people to open. Keep your availability the same you're not paid enough.
fuwaldah 3 points 1y ago
I guess you have two choices. Check on the dogs earlier or Tell your SM you can't work that early. It's your decision.
