Anyone else's store have them take their meal break an hour into their 8 hour shift??? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by kittykaty14
I don't think there is legally anything wrong with it but damn I have to go back and work 7 more hours now. Like wtf?!
Miserable_Party_3857 124 points 1y ago
Nope! As a shift supervisor I make sure that their meal break is taken at least 4 hours into their 8 hour shift to help break it down :)
kittykaty14 [OP] 27 points 1y ago
You're a saint
Miserable_Party_3857 10 points 1y ago
sob i love my beans so much okay
vietlazed 2 points 1y ago
As a shift supervisor I make sure my sm schedule extra person to run break in middle of peak. 6-7 people
vegan-trash 7 points 1y ago
You can argue that there’s more than 6 hours left on your shift so you’d need another lunch
Poyal_Rines 75 points 1y ago
Yeah that shit is bull. Like I'm an opener, I don't wanna take my break at 6am
astivana 46 points 1y ago
It might be legally wrong >> I discovered recently that if you work at least 7 1/2 hours in my state, you have to have a half and it can’t be within two hours of the beginning or end of the shift.
Audreyy117 11 points 1y ago
What state are you in?
kittykaty14 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I'm in California. All I could find was that it has to be taken in the first 5 hours
juicyspitwater 2 points 1y ago
most likely california cause that’s my state laws too.
AccomplishedWill471 1 points 1y ago
wait that’s a cali law? i live here and at my starbucks the openers (4am-12:15pm shift) normally take our lunch around ~5:30am. they say it’s to get our lunch out of the way before peak (during the week it’s from 7am-9am normally). during peak we have everyone on the floor.
almondmiilktea 1 points 1y ago
My sister is a shift at a store in CA as well and she’s an opener and taker her lunch at 5:30 as well
Mickey_Fan51 17 points 1y ago
I agree it’s annoying. It happens at my store too and I hate working 7+ hours straight.😞
Ok-Mix-5129 15 points 1y ago
That’s not allowed? Corporate policy is you cannot work more than six hours before you need a lunch.
kittykaty14 [OP] 6 points 1y ago
I looked it up for my state and it's allowed it just really sucks. Longest 7 hours of my life 😩
Ordinary-Theory-8289 11 points 1y ago
Although legally they are in the clear, they are violating Starbucks policies. Breaks should be given out every 2 hours. So if you work 12-8 you should get your first 10 around 2pm and then yiur half around 4
b99__throwaway 2 points 1y ago
it has to be taken before the end of your 6th hour (5th in california and some other states). unfortunately you aren’t legally entitled to another one bc you haven’t hit the hour requirement for a second lunch (10 hours in california, 2nd lunch needs to be taken before the end of your 10th hour)
cpv_91 13 points 1y ago
Our previous SM did this. She had no interest in actually giving you a 'break', she just wanted to meet her legally mandated requirements. If you only got a 10, she didn't care if she made you take it at 6 when you would be there until almost 11a. Meanwhile she took as many 'breaks' as she needed. I hated that bitch and I'm so glad she transfered to a new store 'she could set up exactly how she wanted'. Good riddance. 😝
pezookazoo 9 points 1y ago
in rhode island my shifts always space out all 10’s and halves so it’s every 2 hours we get a break
converse_ing 3 points 1y ago
That is how we do our breaks too, but my old GM use to make us go early on the weekends. Va SSV
kittykaty14 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I wish 😭
Torirock10 7 points 1y ago
mine does that sometimes and it’s annoying
stephybear3 6 points 1y ago
As an opener, I get it. They don't want us to break during peak. But honestly? Same.
kittykaty14 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
That's where I'm at. I get it I guess but man it SUCKS. I don't even know how I made it through
platypus253 5 points 1y ago
In Washington state your meal break must occur after two hours into your shift and before you hit the five-hour mark.

tell them no. it’s policy to try to get it as close to the middle of your shift as possible
geminibxtch666 4 points 1y ago
Dude yes. I hate it so much it makes my shift go by so slow
Electrical_Metal_106 4 points 1y ago
All the openers do this at my work so that the lunches are taken before peak. If you start before 6am, you better believe your lunch will be given 1.5-2 hours into your shift. It took me a minute to get used to this but that’s how they do it at my store.
eyveggg 3 points 1y ago
I’m an ssv at a high volume dt and I do this :( but I send myself first and give my openers their lunches after. And during peak I give them their 10s. I make sure to give them their breaks every two hours. Honestly helps with the flow of operations when you’re running a 6-7 person play. :( so I’m sowwie.
kittykaty14 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I'm not crazy mad because I understand why stores are doing it, it just really sucks and seems a little unfair considering today we had 12 people on our floor. It makes the days feel even longer and I'm straight up exhausted at the end.
ItzBoogieMan 4 points 1y ago
Sometimes when i work exactly enough to have 3 breaks, one of them is usually a bit early or a 30 minute break and 15 minute break is back to back to make it 45. But 1h into ur shift for a meal is stupid
National-Vehicle1063 3 points 1y ago
That isn’t okay, coming from a SSV, I do have some baristas who want to take it later or earlier into the shift but if they don’t communicate that I play towards the middle of their shift and around peak.
rudebii 3 points 1y ago
The legality depends on the state. In California, I believe the language says as close to the halfway point of the shift as “reasonably possible.”
kittykaty14 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
It seems really weird that there isn't an issue with us working 7 hours straight
b99__throwaway 1 points 1y ago
if you’re in california, the law only says that you need a second lunch before the end of your 10th hour if you work more than 10 hours, which is dumb :(
kittykaty14 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I'm actually in California and after a quick google search all it says it that it if you work 5+ hours you have to a lunch and it must be before the 5th hour has passed.
verdeuce 1 points 1y ago
Are you an opener?
AtTheBarMatt 2 points 1y ago
Oh hell no. That may legally be allowed but its against policy and just a dick move. Your shift is clueless and can't manage time properly...they'd revolt in my store if we pulled that crap, and with a 9-10 partner play that ass whoopin would be real bad.
smoolbeean 2 points 1y ago
yeah but i get a 30 an hour in and a 20 maybe an hour before im off. wish my management was better
yvesnings 2 points 1y ago
my store does that on Saturdays and Sundays only. Before the start of peak. I hate it sooo much
flamingavocados 2 points 1y ago
I ask to take it later 🫡
Tricky-Figure8373 1 points 11m ago
I’m confused as to why shifts are giving 30s so early…If it’s a morning shift, you can send 30s after peak ends. That’s fucked up lol. You’re supposed to get your first ten, a 30, and then a second ten for an eight hour shift. They can send a break an hour into your shift as long as they give you a break. it’s just fucked up but I would tell your shift something or talk to the SM to find a better way to make the schedule so they don’t feel like they have to send 30s so early
floofxs2 1 points 1y ago
Once I had to take it really early because we were going to be short staffed during peak but usually it was at a time that made sense.
Federal_Pumpkin_6410 1 points 1y ago
… my shift always schedules my lunch in the middle of my 8 hours
kels0kickflip 1 points 1y ago
I’m not sure what’s worse… taking your break as soon as you go in or the last 45 minutes of your 8 hour shift. Tarbux did the breaks at the beginning. My shift has been sending me on break within my last hour. 🙁
th3_thing 1 points 1y ago
One of the partners in my store worked at Dunkin. He said his manager there did that so she could get the break out of the way and make him work longer during peak hours. Sounds like something similar is happening to you so I would go to your store manager and kindly request they knock that off. Might take that to your regional manager if I didn't see change after talking to the store manager
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 1y ago
Sounds like it's against Starbucks policy, as you're working a period of time that's over six hours without a meal break
almostdied_at711 1 points 1y ago
Sometimes I used to skip my lunch or go first so that my beans breaks would be on time. I used to pre schedule the breaks for the week so that they could order food too. Like write them down on my schedule for them ahead of time. Everyone has stuff going on and everyone gets hungry. So I always made sure there was time for them to order food if they had to. I would ask everyone "hey guys, it's blank o'clock. If anyone is gonna order food for your lunch I'll give you 10 minutes to do it right now. "
ZzalFfz8cQgZoFXdqSNS 1 points 1y ago
Lol yeah i would tell them thats not happening
ConditionFirst2522 1 points 1y ago
Chipotle used to do this shit 😭
ZaftigZephyr 1 points 1y ago
Absolutely not. I would first tell my supervisor that I was not ok with that and if they push back talk to your manager. If your manager is okay with that then go to your district manager.

I am a ssv at one of the busiest drive thru in my district. We are frequently understaffed as are many Starbucks across this great land. I would Never do that to one of my baristas. There is no reason for that.
Jowila68 1 points 1y ago
California here, state law is it must be taken by the 5th hour or you violate meal break standards. My store has us get them out of the way as early as possible. I believe the store/company get fines for meal break violations
LycaenopsPictus 1 points 1y ago
As a shift manager sometimes I'll take my lunch super early in the shift to make sure my beans get theirs at a more reasonable hour.
rainyxday 1 points 1y ago
At my store they take a 15 an hour - twoish in and their 30 around 2 hours before they leave
starbucksbarist28 1 points 1y ago
I don’t for others, but myself if I open I enjoy taking my lunch as my first break so I can eat and be ready for the day before it gets super busy
dallizzlee 1 points 1y ago
Yes. And I complain every. Single. Time.
ambambiii 1 points 1y ago
y'all are getting 7+ hours?? 😭 i can barely get one 5 hour shift a week 🥲
S0NofThunder176 1 points 1y ago
it’s common for me to not get one until the last hour of my shift so yknow i think my ssv forgets sometimes
