Why can’t customers tip on credit cards ????(self.starbucksbaristas)

Because Starbucks has always chosen not to have that as an option. Apparently it will be rolling out this fall or winter, though.
I've always thought it was because they think it will slow down drive thrus letting people take a moment to tip while in line like that. But pressure from unionization has finally pushed them into offering it.

I actually asked this question during the Union busting meeting. They say it’s to promote the use of the app bc people can actually tip on the app. The problem w that is everyone closes the app before the tip screen pops up, so few people actually realize you can tip on there. It’s extremely frustrating and takes tips away from us when people don’t have cash

Even if you close it, the tip options pops up as a notification
_lanalana_7 points1y ago
Yep! But after you get and ignore the notification maybe 3-4 times iphones will have a little popup with it to turn off notifications for the starbucks app. So a lot of people probably have those notifications turned off

Especially when the tip thing expires after a few hours, it should be 2 days in my opinion with more pop ups but idk I guess beggars can’t be choosers right Howard?

Yeah but the tip on the app never makes it to the partners.

I saw on the weekly update that they are going to implement credit card tipping in “late 2022”. I believe they were trying to update all stores with new PED credit card readers so it is a nationwide rollout at the same time

Whoa that’s be so amazing! Because I often times get customers trying to tip but they do t carry cash…it’d probably increase tips by a lot
PercyGabriel112910 points1y ago
It definitely would. Any we won't be getting new cars readers, they are just updating the readers. They call it "unlocking," which means it was in the software, they just won't allow us to have the feature until later this year. A bit infuriating, but it's gonna be nice to finally be able to get card tips not on the app.

That’s amazing thank you for the info! I feel like we are morning bartenders and if a bartender can make an extra 3$ because they pulled a draft beer, I want that for nitro haha

How will tips be split amongst baristas if tips are done with credit card or on the app?
Ordinary_Theory853416 points1y ago
On your pay check just like how digital tips are dispersed
Jaded_Fun_71331 points1y ago
Then taxed
[deleted]3 points1y ago
But I found a tip feature on the app. You can turn it on or off. Under account, and notification preferences.
SportsChick793 points1y ago
Only if you pay with a gift card can you tip I’m the app right now
[deleted]1 points1y ago
Ohhhhh mkay
deeciphered2 points1y ago
Yeah the amount of customers that tell me to add a dollar tip on their card and I have to tell them that I can't is sad. A lot of them want to tip but don't have cash on them.
Jaded_Fun_71332 points1y ago
We are going to have to get our tips taxed tho I don’t want that
FlowerCurious5811 points1y ago
Better then nothing
francescugh2 points1y ago
it should be launching sometime this year
[deleted]2 points1y ago
The problem with credit card tips is that they must be claimed.
EarthLaser2 points1y ago
Yeah, but you’re still going to make more money.
[deleted]2 points1y ago
As a server in a full service restaurant, you will break about even after taxes. Unless you have no state taxes.
persona-22 points1y ago
Explain? If I make let’s say $2 more an hour from tips I’m going to owe $2 in taxes? Shouldn’t it be whatever my normal tax rate is on the $2 dollars?
[deleted]2 points1y ago
Right now Starbucks has a tip compliance, they have an agreement to report X amount of tips to the IRS. If you start doing credit card tips and it makes a significant difference, IRS is gonna come looking for their cut. So now your tip compliance that was $.25/hr is no longer, and now you’re claiming an extra $150 per paycheck.
poopylilbutt1 points1y ago
Digital tips in the app must also be claimed.
[deleted]1 points1y ago
Yeah but it’s so little it falls under their already agreed to compliance
Zealousideal-Star4481 points1y ago
Manager claims they are working on it but it’s delayed cut they need to change the whole pos thing and might even change the actual card machines, which will take a bit due to the amount of stores we have. Especially in our district
