I am visiting my brother and his family and wanted to get drinks for the kiddos and everyone. I asked my sister in law if she wanted anything, she replied with " I don't drink Starbucks. They hate Christians. If they don't want me there then I won't go that's fine with me" I'm pretty sure if I walked into a Christian coffee shop I would be treated like shit because of what I look like.... and the fact that I'm atheist lol I just said " well the store I work at has a large after church rush and we always treat them well, just like every other customer" She said nothing back to that lol
Necessary_Low939295 points1y ago
No Starbucks don’t care enough to hate anyone.

thatactorjoe3 points11m ago
Except their employees lol
cookiemonstah873 points11m ago
Nah. They don't hate employees, they're just apathetic. They do hate unions, though!
thatactorjoe2 points11m ago
Idk, it felt like they hated us at our store when I was still there. I think our DM was just the most un-feeling person I've ever encountered lol; he'd come visit on Saturday mornings, when we were running a three person play b/c of callouts, and would take me (the shift) off the floor with our manager for like an hour while the remaining baristas were dying. Idk if this was unique to our DM, but it certainly made it feel like they hated our baristas...but yes, they fucking despise unions, and It's so satisfying seeing them crash and burn with their union busting bull-shit.
Necessary_Low9391 points11m ago
They also don’t hate unions. The company makes them hate it. They don’t hate it because it doesn’t affect them. They get a damn salary
Necessary_Low9391 points11m ago

jazzysoranio209 points1y ago
In some peoples minds not being treated exclusively special = oppression. As someone who grew up in those circles let me tell you the feeling of “we’re the most oppressed group in America” is strong. I remember thinking how can that be when I have never once been afraid of the government raiding our church and taking away our bibles. And there’s more churches than McDonald’s and some of them are wealthier than god.
lilmissambersue [OP]4 points11m ago
Yep spot on. I grew up a Jehovahs Witness and we for sure thought we were SO OPRESSED. And there were instances in other countries where the church service was raided and people were beaten and killed. I was very regularly scared that would happen to us in America because we were taught everyone hated us lol
jazzysoranio2 points11m ago
Here in America we think not having a cross on our coffee cups is totally the same as being burnt at the stake. Real 1st world martyrs.
topic_discusser162 points1y ago
I think they were mad a few years ago because the Christmas cup was red instead of having a design, which many Christians acted like was erasing Christianity or something? Typical US Christians pretending to be oppressed so they have something to complain about.
ladysingtheblues48 points1y ago
The funny thing about the rightwing outrage about "erasing Christmas" is that it's purely focused on aspects of its commercialization. No Christmas tree on cups, stores saying "Happy Holidays", etc, when this commercialization is antithetical to its spiritual meaning anyway. As dubious as that may or may not be.
cookiemonstah873 points11m ago
Not to mention all the little images they would want on cups are actually from pagan traditions. Unless they straight up want a picture of baby Jesus in the manger or something... now THAT would be a bizarre cup to be drinking peppermint mochas out of...
interyx17 points1y ago
Manufactured BS anyway. We have Christmas Blend EVERY. YEAR.
NotyourangeLbabe6 points1y ago
Multiple Christmas blends at that Edit:sp
mrcupcake183 points1y ago
I remember that and I was like seriously? There are worse things going on right now and also you are not being oppressed, you never have and you never will like stfu -___-
cookiemonstah872 points11m ago
I mean we're at war against Christmas, aren't we? And our best attacks so far have been a red cup that says happy holidays, another the following year with snowmen and ice skates, and then the most egregious attack yet, a red gradient with no little images at all! Not even a snowflake that year! *DOWN WITH CHRISTMAS!!!*
(In case the sarcasm isn't oozing as heavily as I meant it to be: /s)
TheDoorMatts40 points1y ago
I think it also has to do with a certain portion of “Christians” having the perception of an “LGBTQ agenda” (whatever that means) that Starbucks is/was promoting partners to wear pronoun pins if they felt comfortable doing that.
Zealousideal-Star44828 points1y ago
It’s cuz they told baristas to say “happy holidays” instead of “merry Christmas” cuz not everyone celebrates Christmas. So in her mind they aren’t naming Christmas by name so it’s being exclusive with “holidays” and being hateful to Christian. I get lectured about it every holiday season. I always say “well I don’t celebrate Christmas but I do celebrate New Years, I don’t know what you celebrate but I hope yours is a happy one!”
ryzzostar9 points1y ago
I was letting the customers tell me Happy/Merry whatever holiday they celebrate and I would say it back to them. If they didn't say anything I just said I hope whatever holiday you celebrate is full of joy and love. And left it at that. It also started conversations about traditions and helped me make great customer connections.
Zealousideal-Star4483 points1y ago
It’s a great connection starter to bring up holidays like that if they are happy and happy understanding that not everyone is the same as them. Also I should have added that the holidays are a hard time of year for a lot of people who have lost loved ones or have moved away for whatever reason and can’t afford to fly back and take time off, Starbucks is the 3rd place and they can celebrate it with us as long as it follows the 3rd place rules and no fire/ candles with real flames are allowed, but your welcome to us electric! I think as partners we should keep this in mind especially with the pandemic not everyone can see loved ones and we should emphasize these values then. Whatever y’all celebrate hope it’s a good one year around
fuwaldah26 points1y ago
It's possible the service workers who have had to deal with your sister hate her. It's unlikely it's because she's a christian though. Be honest... is she just an asshole?
lilmissambersue [OP]18 points1y ago
BAHAHAHAHA yess..... yes she is
fuwaldah14 points1y ago
There you go.
No, Starbucks doesn't hate Christians. Most partners are probably Christians. We don't care. But if you're an asshole, please don't come.
emmalllemma11 points1y ago
As an alumni partner, we don’t care if you’re religious or not, just be a good customer! The vibe check skills of Starbucks baristas are also exceptional from experience
ryzzostar5 points1y ago
You pass the vibe check for sure friend.
Neat_Mix_619223 points1y ago
I think people reach real deep for stuff like this
Sarahthelizard17 points1y ago
It's because they support LGBT people and other "progressive" causes, which they see as oppression.
I'm not a christian but during the holidays starbucks has a literal fucking christmas tree holding gift cards and ornaments and trinkets that say merry christmas, and usually little to zero Hanukkah/Ramadan/Kwanza-themed merchandise.
Sdee12348 points1y ago
There is almost always ONE hanukkah themed gift card. I would always make sure to sneak one in the stack when people would ask for "20 assorted $5 holiday cards"
lilmissambersue [OP]3 points11m ago
Right??! I'm gonna decorate the store for Christmas. I love the decorations and lights and smells! I want to include Hanakkuh decorations too though. Just decorate for every holiday. Like all the holidays threw up in our store
lady_victory15 points1y ago
Some ppl just think that supporting or being part of LGBTQ = anti-Christian
tori216589 points1y ago
Some Christian’s have this werid oppression kink going on….
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
Hahaha yessssss
whatsthebigdealwith_9 points1y ago
Do they pay money? That's what we like.
Assiqtaq9 points1y ago
Starbucks wants money from everyone. Just as any other large corporation.
Exhausted_mama937 points1y ago
That’s so strange to me cause I worked there and am Christian. Actually I know tons of Christians that work/ed there and drink Starbucks daily 🤷🏻♀️ Also I genuinely hope you’re never treated horribly just because of your beliefs and appearance when encountering other Christians. Imo they’re not really Jesus lovers if they’re treating you that way
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
Unfortunately I have interacted with Christians who don't seem to pay attention to what Jesus said. But, I've also met alot of very sweet and accepting Christians too
BlackberryOpposite316 points1y ago
Starbucks never directly mentions Christmas in their holiday launches. It’s simply “holiday themed”. This makes sense to me because Christmas is not the only holiday that is celebrated during that time of year. There are many other holidays from many different cultures and because Starbucks serves a diverse group of people it would make sense to be inclusive. However, Christian’s with a persecution complex like to whine about it.
ProfessionalRock79406 points1y ago
BAHAHAHAHAHA that's the funniest thing I've ever heard 🤣🤣 it might also be because of how queer friendly Starbucks is for partners
MrsClaireUnderwood5 points1y ago
Ah, the ever-persecuted Christian. Gotta love it.
rudebii5 points1y ago
The siren only hates unions. It couldn’t care less about a customers’ religion so long as the money’s good.
FoxyOnTheRun_5 points1y ago
Christians? Naaah.
Now your sister on the other hand? Yeah we don’t want her there lol
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
I don't want her near me either hahaha
laurthegr85 points1y ago
lol is this because sbux is pride friendly? seems like the only reason they’d “hate christians”
peepeepoopaccount4 points1y ago
Pretty sure she just thinks that because of that stupid red cup that one year lol
mewwissa3 points1y ago
Nah Starbucks loves the Christians. They want everybody’s money so they pander to as many groups as possible 🤣
orangethrees3333 points1y ago
They don’t hate Christians at all. But one year, possibly 2017-2018 for the holidays, Starbucks decided to exclude the word “Christmas” from their advertisements, more specifically, their holiday cup design, and people went bonkers. Christian Americans thought it was a war against Christianity but truly it was a move to be more inclusive for all religions. Honestly, all my time working for Starbucks, open Christians have been the most offended by Starbucks choice to move from a Christian approach to a more inclusive company.
Playful_Sector3 points1y ago
Hi! Christian partner here. Starbucks only hates people who want workers' rights
geogrokat3 points1y ago
Lol I had to explain to my nephew that no, SB doesn't hate veterans. Solidarity, pal
RebekahR843 points1y ago
Ah yes. Manufactured outrage.
chipqueen25323 points1y ago
they say this bc Starbucks stuff generally doesn’t say merry Christmas, it says happy holidays, which they think means they hate Christians lol
lunarmadz2 points11m ago
lol I work here and I’m a Christian…wear a cross necklace all the time at work. not Christian in the conservative way but I don’t care about customers religions at all. They’re just looking for a way to feel oppressed and act like the victim. Love is ultimately in my eyes what Christianity is about but a lot of people are missing it….
Swimming-Fee-24452 points11m ago
I can tell you that my very older Christian neighbour made a comment like “how can you work there? It’s full of gays and trans people and there are rainbow flags all over the place - it’s disgusting”. So I told her that the people I work with are amazing and that her attitude wasn’t very Christ-like.
majik_rose2 points1y ago
Lmao imagine being so self centered and hateful that you see being accepting of groups/people that you hate as being hateful towards you
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
I cannot roll my eyes any harder at these people.
ryzzostar2 points1y ago
There was a holiday cup controversy in 2015 (plain red cups with the Starbucks logo on them instead of having a winter themed pattern or scene on them like the years before that) about them taking Merry Christmas of their holiday cups when they had never had those words on their holiday cups ever before that year. A conservative Christian named Joshua Feuerstein started the rumor and said it was part of a secular war on Christmas and also was saying that Starbucks partners couldn't say Merry Christmas or they would be fired. None of it was true. They're are several different gift cards and cups each year that have the words Merry Christmas on them as well as some Kwanzaa and Chanukah themed gift cards. We don't leave anyone out except maybe solstice celebrators like myself. I am not complaining. At the time my parents fully drank that kool-aid about the war on Christmas and banned Starbucks from our family home. When I went to work at Starbucks in 2020 my mom had a full on Jesus cow about it. I even bought her a Christmas gift card to prove to her that they weren't evil like she was told.
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
Ohhhh I see! Very interesting!
AmIAwakeOr2 points1y ago
Baristas hate working during the Sunday rush. I'm not sure it's all the Christians fault but they do have a ton more churches by comparison.
jondgul2 points1y ago
Does she still have a trump flag out front of the house?
devilsreject49262 points1y ago
Lol starbucks don't hate Christians but as someone who's been abused by them I sure as hell do
bottlehalffull1 points1y ago
We have a huge crowd the comes every Sunday because of our proximity to a church. They don't come the entire month of June though...
killerweeee1 points1y ago
Sounds like a chronically aggrieved conservative Christian.
chaddybabydaddy281 points1y ago
I would’ve cared so little id reply “sooo…. Dunkin?”
alicetracie1 points1y ago
Huh, here I was thinking it was in reference to how open LGBT+ Starbucks (generally) is. Given the typical 20th century Christians going on about how being gay is a sin and all that.
sag6061 points1y ago
i only hate the christians that tell my coworkers and i that jesus loves us because of how we look

> I'm pretty sure if I walked into a Christian coffee shop I would be treated like shit because of what I look like.... and the fact that I'm atheist
I'm a non-believing, non-religious person who has worked in Christian stores in the past...
No, you almost certainly wouldn't be. No one would likely give a shit what you look like, or whether or not you're an atheist. By and large, they're just there to do their job.
*Edit: Similar to how some religious people sometimes seem to think that atheists go through their lives with gods, religions, and believers at the front of their minds, I think some atheists occasionally make the same mistake, seemingly assuming that religious people live in a perpetual state of atheist panic. Perhaps some do, but my experience is that they are by no means the norm or common. Having worked with religious people in religious settings, I can't personally think of a single example of someone treating a person "like shit" for looking a certain way or for not sharing their beliefs. If anything, someone obviously "different" coming in was often a welcome change. Otherwise, no one cared.*
lilmissambersue [OP]1 points11m ago
I'm sure you are totally right, and I'm really happy you have been treated kindly. I have known alot of very sweet Christians who never made me feel judged. But, this weekend I had to listen to so many off handed racists, homophobic comments. Telling children to "stop being retarded" Just all over making mean rude comments about non Christians. Oh and the cherry on top, saying women in Africa should be sterilized.... These Christians would for sure treat people worse for what they look like. The only reason they expect me is because my brother loves me so much and isn't as much of an asshole as his wife and church. They don't want to like me, they have to. If they knew I was queer and my partner non-binary- I wouldn't be allowed to see my neices and nephews. I'm just sad and frustrated at how alot of Christians act.
