Considering applying for a job as barista. What's it like? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by PassionateBeanEater
Hey everyone! I'm considering becoming a barista at Starbucks here in the Netherlands so I've been lurking in this sub recently. So I thought I could ask here what working here is like.

What are the tasks of a barista? I know that you also interact with the customers but do you also have to do things like clean the store after closing? Is the work stressful? (At peak hours I imagine it is) I keep seeing stuff about licensed and corporate stores. What does that mean? And finally, is the work a bit enjoyable? I've heard mixed stories, some people love it, some hate it. I know it is work so pretty much by definition it's not exactly "fun", but I was hoping maybe there'd be some room to make work friends or something. Just be brutally honest :)

Also bonus points if you're a barista in the Netherlands. I think this sub is mostly inhabited by Americans, but labour laws are very different (much better) over here, so the experience may be different.

Sorry for the wall of questions, I'm sure stuff like this gets posted constantly here. Thanks in advance! :)

I'm in the UK!

*Don't do it oh god don't do it*

If you have to or really want to, the job itself is alright, but at mine at least, we're understaffed, underpaid and overworked. Our problems are not listened to, or if they are, they're ignored. Customers are almost always rude, even if not intentionally. Your name is now "I'll have a- (order)"

hi! im an american so i’ll answer what i can :D

whether being a barista is a good job is widely up for debate. personally, i love it in spite of rude customers. i think it’s really fun! but i also thrive in a fast paced environment so..

1. the tasks include: taking orders/connecting with customers (be prepared to make small talk), taking orders over a headset if in a drive thru, obviously making drinks, but also taking care of the environment! so cleaning bathrooms, sweeping/mopping, cleaning drains and fridges, doing dishes, deep cleaning etc. and yes, you clean after closing. not always a deep clean though— there’s designated plans for that.

2. it can be stressful, especially during peak and rushes. you might find yourself running around and doing a lot of things at once. hopefully you have a good team to support you cus it’s great when you do! when you’re short staffed it’s a lot harder.

3. a licensed store is a starbucks inside another store, so like the barnes and noble cafe or target starbucks. they don’t 100% follow corporate standards because they’re not starbucks employees, they’re employees of the store they’re in. corporate stores are standalone locations, whether it be a cafe or drive thru.

4. i think the work is enjoyable! a lot of my coworkers are my age (18-25), i think making drinks is really fun, and even if a customer or order is particularly annoying it’s still enjoyable to poke fun at those. it’s really up to the person though. i also don’t find myself in a lot of store drama either so that can have a big impact on if you like it or not. also if you get anxious or don’t do well with fast paced environments you probably won’t have a lot of fun.

i hope this helps!!
