did i handle things correctly?(self.starbucksbaristas)

CW: for overall gross things such as vomiting and diarrhea.
I feel bad for having to call in on such short notice especially since this is only my second week at starbucks, but I am genuinely too sick to work. I started having the symptoms for food poisoning around 1:00 (my shift is at 4:30) and i literally couldn’t speak to anyone for an hour because I was vomiting and having diarrhea. I’m 99% sure you’re supposed to call in when having those specific symptoms. I called my store twice but they didn’t pick up so I gave up. I called my store manager but she didn’t answer so I left a voice message. I then texted her just to make sure she was notified about my illness because I didn’t have time to make any more calls (doctor’s appointment) and the last time I tried to call her she didn’t get my voicemail for two days later. My store manager responded saying that text isn’t the appropriate way to call in for a shift. She said I needed to call the store again and call people to cover my shift. I tried my best to follow the policy but there’s not much I can do when the store doesn’t answer. If I had more time to get people to cover me I would have but I need to visit the doctor. Did I handle this wrong?

It is absolutely not your responsibility to find coverage when you fall ill. The policy:
”In the event of an unplanned absence, e.g., the sudden onset of illness, injury or emergency, or when the partner is using paid sick leave allowable by law, the partner will not be held responsible for finding a substitute. The partner is still responsible for notifying the store manager or assistant store manager (or partner leading the shift if the manager is not in the store) of the absence prior to the beginning of the shift so coverage can be arranged if needed.”

First, NEVER report to work when experiencing those symptoms. No matter what your reasons are, it's wrong to tax yourself that much AND risk getting everybody else sick. Keep your butt at home, and REST. Please. :(
Second, you do need to call work to notify them, but if they don't answer you'll need a record of your attempt to reach them. I call a few times and if nobody answers, send a text containing the screenshot of my call history to prove I tried.
Third, getting people to cover your shifts is your boss's responsibility, not yours. You didn't plan to get sick, so you couldn't plan to trade shifts or anything like that. As I said earlier, stay home and rest. I say this in almost every post I find like this, but the job is not worth risking your health. If your boss can't understand that, find a new one that can. Please.

The SM was right that you have to call, not text when you are sick. But you do not need to find coverage.

They did call a few times and no one picked up. Next best course of action In that scenario is to reach out the SM which is exactly what they did. What more could they have possibly done? SSVs should be answering the phone.

What do I do when the store doesn’t pick up?
fuwaldah10 points11m ago
Then I guess you can text your SM and say you tried calling several times and nobody picked up. Then turn your phone off and go to bed.

I take a screen shot of my call log showing that I called the store at whatever time. Then I text that to my SM. Just to cover my butt.

Precovid: I went in with a fever one time only because the sm was trying to get me fired, now that I think about it. I should’ve just stayed home and have my ass fired.
