Have any of you had an injury happen at work and your shift told you to walk it off? Bc I left work early and now I feel like my crew is mad at me.
new_direction_134 points11m ago
As a supervisor if someone gets hurt or has a medical issue on my shift, they are now my first priority. I’ve worked at my store for a long time (currently longer than anyone else) and have been very heavily involved in training and encouraging a certain culture, and if someone gets hurt, is a no brainer for everyone on the floor that they need taken care of. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, they’re sitting with me somewhere safe with a glass of water and us going through what happened to figure out what needs to happen. I’d rather be understaffed than know everything is relying on someone torturing and possibly further injuring themselves on my floor to stay. And everyone I work with also knows that if a customer has an issue with any of this, I’ll be right there to explain to them like they’re six years old that their coffee might take a little longer with an emergent medical issue happening on our staff.
I used to have a manager who just didn’t care in that way. I had a migraine on the floor that came on suddenly ninety minutes before I was supposed to leave. She kept me on the floor and on bar until I broke two (2) glass things because I couldn’t see what I was doing because I lose vision in parts of my eyes, and sent me home thirty minutes early. I will never be that person and I won’t let anyone else deal with that either.
bestowcurse [OP]70 points11m ago
You sound like a great shift tbh. I've had to leave because of a migraine before and everyone seemed to just get annoyed and mad at me because of that.

At my store I have a partner (who we now know has hyperventilation syndrome) who one time got really dizzy and was hyperventilating and her vision was going blurry and in and out and was in the office trying to ask for help but couldn’t speak, ambulance was called on her and she went to the ER, that’s how bad it was and my manager just shrugged it off as anxiety. Didn’t even check on her or anything. We need more supervisors and managers like you. 🥺🥺

What was the injury??? I’ve been burned numerous times where I’ve had to sit down and cool it for a few minutes, but never something so bad I had to go home. Also, if you get an injury on the job, it’s Starbucks that should feel bad. Your coworkers can suck it up. Your workplace should never, ever be a place that causes you harm. Even the tiniest bit.
bestowcurse [OP]35 points11m ago
Falling on my knee bc the walk way wasn't clear and I slipped lmao.
I usually just ignore cuts and burns unless it's bad enough I need to use burn gel lmao.
But when I fell I felt like I was about to pass out from pain for a moment and u was pretty much limping and still am tbh! I was told to walk it off
[deleted]68 points11m ago
I would recommend filing an incident report if you haven’t for that.
bestowcurse [OP]28 points11m ago
I did do that. I felt guilty as I was leaving and had to call some people to get my shift covered 🙃
[deleted]43 points11m ago
You could even report your shift for being unsupportive of you. The other day, mocha tubs fell on top of me and I wasn’t even hurt cuz I got my hands over my head in time but my shift was so concerned, asked if I was okay, needed ice, wanted to file an IR, asked if I needed a break. Your shift is there for you. Sounds like they weren’t this time around, and that’s not okay. Maybe have a chat with them if they’re the type of person who can have that kind of chat.
vegan-trash3 points11m ago
If they want to try to make you feel guilty let them. It’s the way of Starbucks tbh. Prioritize yourself. I’m an SSV for 7 years and your team shouldn’t hold it against you, and you didn’t do anything wrong!
Zealousideal-Star4486 points11m ago
Call your manager and then call Sedgwick if your injury is bad enough to leave early it has to be on record so if it gets worse or reoccurring you can get workers comp
bestowcurse [OP]5 points11m ago
I filed an incident report through sedgwick on BOH before I left. My manager was on the floor and I told him.
Zealousideal-Star4481 points11m ago
Ok they shouldn’t be mad at you if they are they are assaholes lmao. Take care of yourself so you can go to your next shift
ashley09276 points11m ago
I fell once and hurt my leg REALLY bad to the point it hurt to walk. My old shift told me she needed me to get up and do a trash run and finish my shift when I requested to go home to ice it. I was in pain for multiple days after that. I was SUPER new and I should have filled out an incident report.
bestowcurse [OP]2 points11m ago
I'm really sorry that happened. That's awful
Spookybabette3 points11m ago
I burnt my hand Really Really bad during a evening rush and didn’t even know I had to file a report or even tell my shift because it wasn’t mentioned in my training
I stayed the whole night, even showed my shift how bad the burn was and they were like “oh wow!” But didn’t get sent home. My sm saw how bandaged up my hand was and asked me about it the next day and when I told her what went down she was maaaddd. The next couple of days however, I barred during peak like 3 or 4 times that week with my hand bandaged up in a plastic glove and it sucked Ass so bad lmaoo. Not only the pain and throbbing but I almost dropped everything and stickers kept sticking to the glove and shit
I should have spoken up more because yeah, I helped my team out and that was cool but also I should have gotten some sort of comp maybe and not been put on positions where I used that hand so much because it hurt so bad lol
Your health and safety matter more than non empathetic coworkers
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
Yeah one time I had busted my ankle once really bad. I'm not sure how just walking during a rush and it hurt so bad that I had to wear a brace for weeks after. I wish a filed a report at the time.
I am sorry that happened to you.
nicolelynnejones3 points11m ago
First off, it needs to be reported for sure
bestowcurse [OP]2 points11m ago
Yeah I did that.
cookiemonstah872 points11m ago
The fact that so many people at the level of shift and above tell people to "walk it off" is insane go me. I used to be in management at a previous job and we had to file incident reports for workplace injuries as minor as a papercut that doesn't even bleed. I don't know if this is entirely true, it might vary by state, but as far as I know, anyone in any position of leadership who was around at the time of the incident can be held directly responsible if they fail to report it themselves, and the company as a whole can be fined pretty heavily
hfgkvjf2 points11m ago
I JUST had this happen to me. I fell at work, my knee gave out on me as we were closing and I was cleaning and 2 of my coworkers had to help me walk to a chair because I couldn’t walk on my knee because of how badly it was hurting. I asked the shift lead that was in charge if I should go to the emergency room and he told me to “walk it off” too. I ended up going and texted the store manager about what happened and I overheard later on that he got upset at the shift lead for not doing an incident report.

That's a very toxic environment. They should be able to understand that you are human and sometimes things happen. The crew is brainwashed by capitalism and they think it's your fault but I'm reality it's the standards and pressure of working while 1 person is down that makes them angry. They are forced to be there (work) and society puts ur worth and value on whether or not you can do the job. It's so fucked up. All we need is understanding. It's so simple but many cannot step back and see the big picture. They just see their pov of events.
This has happened to a crew member before and she felt awful for leaving. I went to the back and told her not to worry, "You are in pain and I wouldn't want you working through that rush. That is capitalist guilt you are feeling but I'm here to tell you it's ok and to take care of yourself from time to time"
There's is work mode and human mode. Some people have a tough time switching back to human mode if something happens at the workplace. So don't feel bad or scrutinized. It's not your fault. In that moment they didn't see you as a human being, they saw you as a coworker leaving early. I would say talk to ur manager or dm of there are any residual feelings of distrust or negativity from those coworkers.
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
Yeah. I'm an anarchist and a leftist but I get the capitalism brain struggle.
I feel like the first thing I ask people is if they need any kind if medical assistance if anything happens but not everyone does that or they're too busy to think about anything other than window times I guess.
SportsChick792 points11m ago
I stumbled over my shift's foot today and she was freaking out that I hurt myself and I didn't even fall (I trip over my own feet, I'm pretty good about catching my balance). I can't imagine a shift angry because I was legit injured.
Ill-Notice37531 points11m ago
I went on a medical LOA, had ACL surgery, my first shift back a partner was cleaning the drains and left puddles of water everywhere. I was in my tennis shoes, which was most comfortable, at the time due to swelling from over use after being off for so long. I went back into my routine as solo partner for open while the other finished prep and drains. Well on my way to grab my iced coffee from the brewer and slipped and fell right on the knee I had surgery on. Needless to say, I was light headed and in excruciating pain. My manager asked if I was okay enough to finish the order or did he need to take over. Didn’t ever ask if I needed a break or wanted to go home. He just stuck me in the window for the rest of my shift. Turns out I had a bone bruise from the fall and decided with my surgeon to go back on LOA
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
That's so messed up. I'm sorry that happened to you.
park-bug00331 points11m ago
It really depends on the individual store. I had a parter have a full melt down taken them to the back talked them through till a shift recognized and sent me to the floor. They left soon after. I myself had an injury occur that hurt for over a month (knee). They adjusted my floor post to help but didn't incorage treatment and wouldn't send me home the day it happened. It was about 4 weeks of window only till I felt better. Also I got sick from taking medicine on and empty stomach and was forced to take a 10 day leave. Communicate with the shifts let them know and the store should work with you at the very least.

I slice my finger on a cinnamon shaker that exploded in my hand. i didn’t even notice that it cut me at first, i was more concerned about the glass and i requested fellow barista get a broom and towels to clean up the glass so i wouldn’t scatter shards around the store. it wasn’t until they came back and freaked out that i was gushing blood did i feel the pain and go wrap it. my shift still put me on bar even though i couldn’t move my finger too much in the bandage and still tried(failed thanks to one of my coworkers) to have me do night dishes after close. :/

PaleontologistLoud371 points11m ago
i fell a few months ago on cold bar and hurt my knee pretty badly and had to be taken to the emergency room. i ended up needing months of physical therapy to recover. if you're hurt you shouldn't be working. also if your shift/manager is trying to discourage you from filing an incident report or seeking medical care, please don't listen to them
bestowcurse [OP]2 points11m ago
I'm sorry that happened to you! That's awful.
It took them 2 hours of me bugging them until I got them to help me file an incident report but I got there in the end.
anxiouspeony1 points11m ago
Hope you are okay OP. Never let the possibility of your team being mad at you prevent you from putting your health and safety first. They can get over it, and will understand once it eventually happens to them too that they need to leave suddenly. These things happen!
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
Yeah I was told to walk it off lmao 💀
anxiouspeony1 points11m ago
I would tell therm to shove it and then leave bc store managers leave for the dumbest shit all the time
Ok-Bowl43921 points11m ago
Go to the doctors straight away if you’re actually hurt and then call pcc and get work comp. If you’re now ok I’d get in touch with your DM about the situation as that’s not ok
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
Yeah I'm gonna go tomorrow if there's 0 improvement on the injury!
lilangrytiger1 points11m ago
I’m glad you reported the injury! There is a number to call for reposting a partner for negligence. If you feel comfortable talking to your district manager I would recommend doing that next as well. I’m so sorry that happened. If you feel like you need to go seek medical attention do it asap. The longer you wait the more likely they are to not pay for it. That is a clean safe and ready issue. That can cause your store to get a fine if it’s not taken seriously. We had a partner slip and bruise her tailbone at my store while I’m was the shift. The first thing is to always support partners during injury. I am so saddened that you felt so unsupported not just by your shift but also by the team. I hope you heal well! You are your own advocate but also your helping advocate for other partners who do get injured by reporting to the appropriate person. And by that I mean to your District manager or to the hotline to allow them to take action in proper training the shift. I hope this helps.
bestowcurse [OP]2 points11m ago
Thank you for taking the time to tell me this! I'm waiting to see if it's bad enough to bother about it. I've broken bones before and I had a preexisting injury on that knee so it's possible it's just a bad bruise or something. I'm definitely going to get care tomorrow if I wake up and there's 0 improvement.
Unfortunately we have the ever cycling dms so idk who's the current dm even right now.
different_as_can_be1 points11m ago
i had a shift who forced me to work through some horrible illness. couldn’t speak or breathe without hacking up a lung. i was in the back crying bc it hurt so bad, and she told me to suck it up. bad shifts are out there. but the next day i had the two best shifts i ever worked with and they sent me home straight after rush and left me on customer support until they could step away and take over for me.
i did indeed report the prior shift for pulling that stunt and she got in trouble for sure, and deserved it.
bestowcurse [OP]2 points11m ago
Yeah I've had a shift guilt me to coming in while sick despite me failing the covid coach. And you'll never guess what happened (I had covid). I reported it and nothing happened unfortunately
hayliis1 points11m ago
Not an injury but I had one of my ovarian cysts rupture on shift and I was the shift supervisor. I was vomiting from the amount of pain I was in and I called my SM and she said she couldn’t come in because “she didn’t want to,” and “I would be fine, just take some ibuprofen.”
There was another shift where I couldn’t see properly because I got a migraine and was out of my medication for when I get them. I ended up getting super sick and she told me I couldn’t go home for “a headache“ but I could go sit in the back, as I was the SSV.
bestowcurse [OP]1 points11m ago
Bro what the actual fuck. Are you ok????
hayliis1 points11m ago
Yeah, this is a couple years ago now. That SM was the reason I left the company. After I left though, I had like a 3 hour meeting with our DM about the SM because of that and how unprofessional she was in other senses.
EliMinivan0 points11m ago
I worked a full shift on a broken foot, walked to work and back before going to the hospital the next day. Broke it jumping a fence the night before and thought I had just pulled something funny when I landed
