Regulars blatantly Mispronouncing menu items.. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by AuntieRia1128
Here’s the deal, I know some of our items are hard to pronounce, especially if you don’t come every day. However, some of our worst perpetrators are regulars!!! How difficult is it to say “oat milk” or “matcha”? We have a lady who orders a “venti toasted vanilla oatmeal shaken espresso decaf with an extra shot and a “strawberry ass-ii”, Every. Single. Day. And you can bet that when we read the order back we pronounce it all correctly, yet… it continues. We have a man who orders a “Venti hot green tea Matchey late, extra hot, double cupped”, every day, and the same goes for him… I know it’s stupid, but it drives me absolutely bonkers!!!

What are some pronunciations they were entertaining at first but now make you want to bash your head against the DTO screen?

may-gan dragonfruit
themergatroid 52 points 11m ago
I want my refresher made with megan
RareLingonberry 39 points 11m ago
Why do SO many people say may-gan or mane-gan dragonfruit like they have never heard of a mango before?
Gameb0i6 3 points 11m ago
I pronounce it “man-go” and people get confused all the time.
CrookedEros 10 points 11m ago
Oh my god I have such a problem with this. The thing is that I know how to pronounce mango. Something about the dragonfruit addition short circuits my brain and I say mang-gan. It’s so embarrassing.
wankmasterr_69 4 points 11m ago
I lose my shit whenever they say Megan or Mongo dragon fruit
anonbaristaandstuff 64 points 11m ago
If I hear one more megan dragonfruit or a caramel micheal I’m quitting
PhenomenalPhoenix 19 points 11m ago
To be fair, “megan dragonfruit” is a pretty easy misspeak. When I was a barista I said “mangon dragofruit” way too many times lol
Heidicindy 56 points 11m ago
Asking for "6 brown sugars" in their pike when they want raw sugar.
lilmissambersue 13 points 11m ago
The first time someone asked for brown sugar I just assumed they really did want brown sugar. But they wanted 7..... I put all 7 in and gave it out lol the dude was like, oh I'm sorry I wanted the raw sugar...it was sooooo thick when i dumped it out lololol
SportsChick79 10 points 11m ago
100% did this my first week. No one, my trainer included, told me that when someone says brown sugar they mean raw sugar.

I saw somewhere on here that a customer referred it as bacon gadoodie and I’ve never called it anything else since.
sirencursedwithrage 19 points 11m ago
ok everyone I know including myself says bacon Gouda , like goo-duh , but one time I fucking said it and the customer was like "aw:).nice try. bacon gow-da"
can someone??????
that cant be right ????
meowdrian 15 points 11m ago
Back in 2012 when the Bacon Gouda was called the Bacon Gouda Artisan breakfast sandwich, I had a customer (male, in his 50’s based on appearance) order one but say “artesian bacon gouda.” He then stopped and asked me “is it artesian or artisan?” I responded with “you can say it however you like, we know what you’re after.” And he just responded with “This is your first job isn’t it?”

Like…. What? .-.
hufflepuffisonfleek 7 points 11m ago
Gouda is a Dutch cheese, the American pronunciation is goo-dah. The traditional Dutch pronunciation is How-dah or something similar. My step mom is Dutch (her parents immigrated here in the 70s) and I’ve had this conversation with her before which is the only reason I know this.

You mean the oatmeal shaken expresso? (Expresso is one of my pet peeves and has been since long before I became a barista. I try so hard not to let it bother me, but it makes me want to slap someone every time)
perixe 27 points 11m ago

Elegant-Tomato720 5 points 11m ago
Same man I was a barista for another company before Starbucks and it happened there all the time too I guess people are just dumb 😭
cookiemonstah87 4 points 11m ago
I actually looked into this once because expresso and relitor (realtor) both drive me up the fucking wall. For some reason nucular doesn't bother me?

Anyway, turns out it has to do with the fact that the dictionary pronunciations are pretty uncommon sounds in English, and if people don't encounter and pronounce them by a certain stage of brain development, it gets cemented in their brains as the incorrect version. They may not even hear a difference between the two. It's the same phenomenon as the stereotype of people from China or Japan having a hard time differentiating between the English R and L sounds. (In their native languages, there is a sound that is sort of between the two, but not either one individually)

Unfortunately this knowledge does not help me not be filled with an irrational, murderous rage upon hearing the incorrect version. But at least I know it's not just a matter of them not knowing any better. Usually.
Elegant-Tomato720 4 points 11m ago
This makes a lot of sense! Thankyou for telling me this it's nice to have a bit more understanding as to why people do this but you're right, it hasn't really eased the annoyance 😂

In my old store there was a rich business man that used to come in, you know the type, suited up, treated us all like his servents, didn't want to speak to any of us beyond saying "expresso". It used to drive me crazy like dude you order this daily and think you're so much better than us all yet you can't even say it correctly 😭
uwumoment 1 points 11m ago
my biology professor pronounced nuclear as nuclear. it made me kinda mad but you’re right because she’s like 60 years old so im sure she was taught that way and just says it as a habit. she spells it right so it confused me everytime lol.
cookiemonstah87 2 points 11m ago
Same. And the hole is instantly filled with murderous rage
sass_mouth39 2 points 11m ago
My store manager would say it like this. Every. Single. Time.
Elegant-Tomato720 2 points 11m ago

Better_Dust_2364 7 points 11m ago
Not bad pronunciation but I had a lady ask for a Carmel macchiato Frappuccino yesterday. had to ask so many follow up questions because she just didn’t understand. She told me it wasn’t just a normal caramel frap. thought it might be affogato, nope. With a shot in it? No. In the end she did indeed just want a Carmel frap 💀💀💀
gabbysafari 7 points 11m ago
we have a lady who orders a “vientay” caramel macchiato every morning 😭
molwalk 5 points 11m ago
Damn she must be rich as hell lmao

For real though, Venti is not a hard word to read I don't know how people manage to mess it up
molwalk 6 points 11m ago

Tit scones?
IzzyLac 5 points 11m ago
I had a man order a caramel crunch frapINO with an AVOCADO (translation: caramel ribbon crunch Frappuccino with an affogato shot). This one really tested my ability to translate customer orders
punchbunny26 5 points 11m ago
WHEN PEOPLE SAY CARMEN RIBBON CRUNCH 😭 and the rage i get when i hear oatmeal is unmatched.

i’ve started to say “did you say oatmeal or oat milk?” just to cause problems. also, when people say “trenti” i want to scream. quick solution to that one is “what size? venTI or trenTA?” and that solves the problem 70% of the time. the other 30% they’re too stupid to function
goreboyfriend 5 points 11m ago
dude my SHIFT LEAD incessantly mispronounces acai save me

sixsmallsheep 3 points 11m ago
damn some people are getting so heated 😭😭
sometimes customers just slip up or genuinely dont know a pronounciation, calm down a bit

but i did have someone ask for the "dragonfly refresher" and that was pretty funny
AuntieRia1128 [OP] 2 points 11m ago
I had someone say this as well!! Also, I didn’t mean for people to get so heated, I just was saying that people who order the same thing every day should kinda know how to pronounce it…
sixsmallsheep 2 points 11m ago
yeah i get that!! regulars who have been told the right word or way to say the word should definitely know how to say the drink they get often
waiting-on-the-day 3 points 11m ago

I pronounce things wrong all the time and it's not on purpose I swear I just always had a speech problem and it doesn't help that I don't talk to people a lot it's so embarrassing. Sometimes it's innocent mistakes 😭
AuntieRia1128 [OP] 2 points 11m ago
I’m sorry! I was definitely not trying to talk about anyone who actually has a speech difficulty. I was talking about the people who order the same thing, every single day and you can tell they just dont care or are doing it on purpose
plasticflowerrs 1 points 11m ago

DisproportionateRug 1 points 11m ago
My fave has been machiati (imagine you’re about to say macchiato but then a Maserati drives by). And one lady who pronounces sriracha as sear-e-ah-che
XepherX 1 points 11m ago
wouldn't macchiati be the correct plural?
Garrickrelentless 1 points 11m ago
To be fair, most people pronounce sriracha incorrectly.

vent-ay
AuntieRia1128 [OP] 0 points 11m ago
As I responded to a few people, I did not mean for this to get so heated. I am not trying to make fun of people with accents or speech difficulties. I was merely mentioning the regulars who order the same Exact thing Every day, and no matter how many times someone says it back they just continue to say it how they want. Yes, this is their choice and it is not the end of the world, but on those days when everything is broken and the cafe has an extremely long line and no one is doing as you ask, it is very annoying…
