Leave of Absence - longer than a month?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by wuddupitsjess
Hi everyone!
I'm wondering if anyone here has taken a LOA longer than a month. If so, were you just on an extended LOA? Or were you separated from the company and rehired?
Some partners at my store have been needing a LOA longer than a month (not medical related), and management is telling them that they need to quit and will be rehired when they plan to come back. But I swear that in the past (I'm a 6 year partner) I remembered partners just working with the manager to be gone longer than a month. My store recently filed for a union so this is feeling like union busting, but I want to confirm my suspicions before reading into it further. So if anyone has some experiences or insight please let me know!

Hi, sm here :) When it says LOA has to be “approved by the manager” all that means is they have to sign the paperwork from Sedgwick along with a signature from the dm or prm. Sm does not get to determine whether or not the leave is needed for whatever reason. Do I want people to take extended leaves? Not typically. Do I want my people to take care of themselves? Absolutely. Whatever the reason is, it must go through Sedgwick. Sedgwick will approve or deny the leave. Hope this is helpful!

Apparently my first store manager put me as leave of absence instead of quitting when I went overseas for a year. So it is possible, and how nice ur sm is. This was years ago, not sure if anything changed

I think the LOA can only be approved for 30 days, but the way I got around it was that I requested 10 days of vacation time right before the leave started so that I had enough time off. So like my leave was June 1-30, but I requested may 20-31 off and used vacation time for that. It was actually my DMs idea lol, and I also worked in an area with a lot of unions so it’s definitely possible

What happened in the past doesn't matter. LOAs have zero to do with the SM. They are handled through Sedgwick or the PRSC, neither of whom care about unions.

Yes, but Sedgwick has told the partners at my store they can only approve one month and anything longer needs to be worked out with the store manager. So once the LOA is needed for longer than a month, then the SM has to be involved. And the SM does care about unions- hence my question.

That is incorrect. The SM does not approve LOAs,.

Then Starbucks needs to figure out their policies.

I did. I had a major family trauma happen and I was off from April to July trying to get a semblance of a life together.
I transferred stores three months into being hired as well. As much as I hate some of the corporate shit, my managers have been amazing and have bent over backward for me and others. I'll sing praises all day for that shit. A lot of people stepped in to help my situation.

The policy is a LOA can only be approved for up to 30days. There are ways to extend this by taking vacation time before or after the LOA, or by working out with your manager that you’ll be scheduled one or two shifts but get coverage for them. But a SM can’t approve a longer than 30day personal LOA. We had a partner get 6 weeks off by requesting two separate vacation periods, for an unexpected study abroad trip (rescheduled due to Covid, found out recently after hire about the rescheduling)
Their willingness to work with a partner on taking more time off is really up to the SM/DM discretion, and they don’t HAVE to allow it
