Am I a scab for picking up shift at a unionized store?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vandilor
I picked up the shifts before I realized the store had won the union vote, I knew they had been trying to unionize though. For context, my former SM had scheduled a store meeting for his return from parental leave but the week or so before the meeting, he was asked to become the SM for that store. We had a kick ass ASM so he agreed. That store is currently closing at 4 due to lack of closing coverage but that might be due exclusively to the seven people that were fired from the store. The last time I worked a shift there, I left two people on the floor for about 30 minutes until the next person arrived so they were already short staffed. My former SM said that he could use the help picking up shifts and I just needed the hours bc corporate said that the ASM was over scheduling the busiest store in the city. I support the union effort but I’m afraid I’m becoming a corporate union busting tool.

It doesn’t sound like you are - you need the hours and they need the help. And especially if you aren’t anti-union I can’t see why anyone there would or should feel like you’re a scab

I’m kinda confused by what you mean? Is it bad to cover shifts at unionized store?

Only if they’re currently striking.

That’s what scab means. You’re only a scab if you’re deliberately crossing picket lines during a strike. Picking up hours at a store that’s won their union vote and no longer striking is actually helping union efforts as it’s showing support.

how would you be a corporate union busting tool if you support the union efforts ? I’m confused why this is a question or what the question really is

my dad jokingly called me a scab for picking up shifts at a union store without being a union member and i was afraid i might be. but everyone seems chill so

You'd only be a scab if the union was on strike at that location.
