Hi, everyone!! I just got hired at Starbucks (have only done my first coffee tasting/documents/onboarding “shift”) and I’m searching for advice. I’m honestly excited for starting this new journey, as I am leaving the healthcare field where I’ve been for the last 6.5 years, to work for Starbucks where I can focus more on school. What was your biggest challenge during training, and what did you do to beat it? I want to get my training over and done with and become my towns next badass barista🤠 (not sorry for the cringe and thanks in advance for responses)

I struggled with cold bar at first because I started training during the winter and those drinks were ordered less! what significantly improved my memory were infographics a past partner made I found here on reddit (https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/mobile/folders/1Q-jMHABjTuHSavF5Pil2xO5KfwdrjFMn), as well as looking through the app and testing my knowledge by clicking on the drinks 😌. it's amazing when you realize they're all essentially the same with a few tweaks here and there. ex. for hot lattes the essentials are 2 3 4 5 (short, tall, grande, venti) for syrups and 1 1 2 2 (short, tall, grande, venti) for espresso. for iced venti lattes you add 1 extra pump of syrup (3 4 6) and 1 extra shot of espresso (1 2 3) - with the first 2 numbers referring to tall and grande as there's no short cold cup :)

My god those infographics are to die for. Thank you! When you say “the essentials are 2 3 4 5” do you mean the flavor sauces, like the white mocha, etc?

Training is stressful, but give yourself the grace that you’ll forget everything and re-learn it and that’s basically how it goes for everyone!

Welcome and congrats! Try not to overwhelm yourself at first!! Don’t try to learn too many shortcuts or tricks right away. Focus on your standard routines and you’ll end up better off in the long run. It’s a rewarding job I’m glad you’re excited :)

I’m pretty new myself (less than 2 months) but I think I got most of the basics down pretty fast because I studied a bunch on my free time. What you can’t practice at home is sequencing though. The most helpful tip I got was to only pull 2 tickets at a time (go for the 3rd ticket when you’re finishing up on the 2). It helps me get less overwhelmed & objectively I get food and drinks out faster that way. Also remember that customers can wait! Don’t try to ring all the people THEN make food or hot coffee. Do it interchangeably. GOOD LUCK!!!

For me, hot bar was definitely the most challenging. What I did to get better is I made a spread sheet on the drinks and how many shots/ pumps of syrup go into each drink according to size. I’d keep it in my pocket for when I’d forget, I’d just look at it

This is gonna sound dumb but I didn’t figure you could make a pocket sized cheat sheet. That’s so smart lol thank you for sharing!!

Bro yesss I got lazy printing it sometimes so I took two different colored post it notes for hot and cold drinks, wrote a condensed cheat sheet and it helped me so much.

most of it is muscle memory rather than actually memorizing the recipes and steps on top of your head. so don't waste too much time memorizing the recipes (especially not during ur free time ! u dont get paid enough for that) and just practice by actually making the drinks and have your trainer shadow you while you're on bar
