Do you consider people who work at a Starbucks within a store (target/grocery) as actual baristas?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ChainWild
I’ve seen some back and forth about it and I’d just like to know what the majority of people think.
QuartzMatrix332 points11m ago
Yes, cause they do the same thing as an actual Starbucks but don’t have the support or resources as us.
EliMinivan100 points11m ago
As a Safeway bux barista, thanks bro
ChainWild [OP]45 points11m ago
I’m a Safeway one too lol that’s why I was asking
QuartzMatrix38 points11m ago
Lol no prob, I started at a grocery Starbucks before moving to an official starbs. Y’all seem to deal with more BS than we do when it comes to training or people. At the grocery Starbucks my training was garbage and I had to googles a few drinks to know how to make them
EliMinivan11 points11m ago
We've been having problems with store management hiring awful people for Starbucks who aren't willing to learn. Past 2 of them went through their training and quit as soon as they started working alone. It really takes more than a heartbeat lol
QuartzMatrix6 points11m ago
I hate when that happens, I wholeheartedly believe in leaving a job if it isn’t for you, but some people just quit so quickly without waiting to see how it goes
plasticflowerrs9 points11m ago
as a target barista, i love the solidarity
galaxydisco178 points11m ago
As a kroger bux barista, I appreciate that
dayahorne3 points11m ago
Another Safeway here, thank you.
Nemmin6022 points11m ago
This is the correct answer. Thank you.
Alternative_Exam3723122 points11m ago
Are any of us really baristas? Lol everything is automatic. All we do is add syrup milk and ice😂
Jaded_Fun_713364 points11m ago
If you think we don’t do that much look at dunkin they have buttons for literally everything except sugar packets
wavydazed420036 points11m ago
before i worked at starbucks, i worked at dunkin for a short period of time, and i can confirm that dunkin even had buttons for the sugar too 😂
Jaded_Fun_71336 points11m ago
Omg 😳😂
SlipImpossible71811 points11m ago
I work at dunkin now and god its so much fucking easier 😂😂😂everything is in a machine thank god

Alternative_Exam37234 points11m ago
I’ve never been to a Dunkin’ I live in a tiny little town we don’t have one😂 we don’t even have mobile ordering yet 😂
Specialist_Salt_50795 points11m ago
I don’t consider any one who works at any Starbucks to be an actual barista
CynicalCharmer24 points11m ago
As a trained barista whose favourite job was Starbucks, you're absolutely right 😂
2166K11 points11m ago
As someone who works at Starbucks but who desperately wants to work at a small coffee shop instead, yep.
pickled_goblin6 points11m ago
I worked at a small coffee shop in my town and they had me take espresso 101, espresso 102, and milk foaming 101. I was really strictly trained on everything and am a total perfectionist about espresso and milk stuff because of it. so you can imagine that my first day at the first starbucks I ever worked at, I almost noped the fuck out hahaha.
Tofukjtten4 points11m ago
everyone at my store is so inconsistent about milk foaming.

Broad-Flounder-49713 points11m ago
I was an “actual barista” before Starbucks, so I feel this is a blanket statement, but if you mean someone who has only worked at Starbucks, well…yeah. I was shocked they at automatic shots and the milk wand was also automatic, but if they want 48 second window times, we can’t waste time tamping shots or even teaching how to perfect them much less keep an eye (on ear) on steaming milk.
It has the fast pace and time management I like from fast food jobs, but none of the grease 10/10

MrsClaireUnderwood86 points11m ago
What is an "actual barista"? If it's someone who is underpaid that makes coffee or coffee-adjacent drinks for the public, then yes, they're actual baristas.
ModeMore33755 points11m ago
How much should you make to not be underpaid? I'm genuinely wondering, no sarcasm here.
couchpillowmuppet19 points11m ago
Enough to live comfortably
ModeMore3375-5 points11m ago
I'm asking what that number is
Broad-Flounder-49719 points11m ago
Roughly $20 after taxes would be a decent starting wage in this current economic climate. Anything less than that is simply not enough (especially considering it’s rare for a barista to get 40 hours in a week)
You should be asking an economist for exact answers. You don't need to be an economist to recognize the problem.
HappyJos30 points11m ago
Who cares lmao
Zealousideal-Star44820 points11m ago
Are they baristas yes! Do they deserve better yes! Do I trust their training? No. Do I think they are well supported by Starbucks as a company? No. Do I think they have enough resources and benefits to be called the Starbucks barista? No. Is that Starbucks fault. Fuck yes! Do I think this can be fixed? Yes. Those baristas need more support. One thing that makes be sad is the fact we have a target between two of the busiest stores, yet they aren’t apart of that community! They aren’t able to use partner numbers to get the discount right? The most basic thing everyone barista is owed, if a freaking discount. Starbucks has flaws everywhere but this one is painful because Starbucks branding is that it’s a people first kinda company, yet here we are
ModeMore33756 points11m ago
Try unionizing Target
megs128820 points11m ago
As a former target sbux barista and currently a corp barista, they don’t have the exact same knowledge since licensed stores are a little less regulated but they could easily come to a corporate store and do just fine. So yes absolutely
livingfortheliquid16 points11m ago
This is some really reaching gatekeeping here. Do they operate an espresso machine for work or at home at a professional level? If so, sounds like they are baristas.
ChainWild [OP]8 points11m ago
I was asking because I work in a grocery store one? No gate keeping I just wanted to know if other people felt the same as other people on Instagram. If it was a common thing
bonjourimeric13 points11m ago
Barista: one who makes coffee 😌 Starbucks corporate store, licensed, or just some random coffee shop
trentablondelatte13 points11m ago
yes, working inside a target or grocery store doesn’t matter
anitasdoodles6 points11m ago
Worked at Starbucks for many years and switched to Target because they paid better. Take your skills where the money is!
ElijahLordoftheWoods5 points11m ago
Yes, they should be full on partners. They often get left to man a kiosk totally alone, having to ring, bar, warming, everything, by themselves. Frankly if I came in to zero other support in a corporate bux I’d call PCC and tell them I’m not working by myself. It’s the South, I’m very gay, like visibly so. I’m literally not safe closing by myself. They put up with shit we’d be able to refuse.
lilkiosk5 points11m ago
Yes. BUT I do not believe them to be trained properly enough to be considered like 100% STARBUCKS barista. They’re like 85% there (I just see so much inconsistency in training and ingredient use). And also not to mention, many of our TikTok “enemies” work at those locations so I have a little bit of bitterness. However, they are definitely still baristas. They do the job of a barista. A barista is just someone who makes coffee imo. Some stores have their own coffee shops inside and those people are baristas so why not the Starbucks baristas as well?
patrickburn5 points11m ago
I worked at Target Starbucks as a lead for years. We did the same training, used the same products/machines, and were monitored by a district level Starbucks manager. Imagine everything the stand alone stores do in each of their roles. Now imagine you’re by yourself and you are responsible for everything. EVERYTHING. Yes the volume is substantially lower, but that doesn’t lessen the workload and prep work. Also no tips.
Keyndoriel5 points11m ago
I am a SSV who got their start in Target. Those baristas work just as hard, if not harder, with none of the benefits and protections of starbucks. Starbucks barely supports us, but minor support is so much better than none. The only reason other baristas don't see them as the same is due to the fact they lack any of our benefits. Theyre the "other".
ladysingtheblues5 points11m ago
None of us really get to know what we're doing by working at Starbucks; it's just rotely following recipes to crank things out at a high volume. If anything your Target people at least get to take more time and put more care into it I think
hotgirllifestyle6 points11m ago
i would not say that that’s true. i’ve worked at a siren retail store in seattle for ~3 years now and the thing about grocery store/licensed sbux is they are often expected to handle everything by themselves. like literally every position as one person. it’s wild. that would never be allowed at a siren retail idk why starbucks is so okay with the drastic difference in experience but i guess sbux makes the money either way
foxygrandma1011 points11m ago
I thought working every position was normal. Tho I do work at a target Starbucks
hotgirllifestyle1 points11m ago
ty for making my point
ladysingtheblues1 points11m ago
Lol that sucks, I guess I've only seen them when they apparently aren't that busy? Also I'm moving to Seattle in like two weeks, are the winters really that bad?
hotgirllifestyle3 points11m ago
hahahahahaha depends on what you’re used to and what you consider bad, but yeah it is very dark/cloudy/rainy during the winter. but the spring/ summer is gorgeous and even the fall usually is decent and has nice days
ladysingtheblues1 points11m ago
Looking forward to it! Happy to get a little summer at least
Babs92204 points11m ago
Do they make cafe drinks?? Yes
breadcat33 points11m ago
Do they not also make coffee beverages??
angryairheadaries3 points11m ago
i was a licensed barista for 1.5 years and i can say that the only difference between licensed and corporate is that the corporate rules and regulations are definitely 10x more supportive than the licensed side… and i am always twice as nice to the target/grocery baristas than i am to the corporate ones, cus the struggle is real.
cosmicmoonpierx2 points11m ago
the only difference is that y’all have it harder, make less money (probably) have less benefits, more entitled customers, less staff, are taught less minute details. starbucks is a whole in-depth community that you decide how deep you wanna delve into. it doesn’t make baristas at licensed stores any less valid. you feel me? i’m an ssv and i started at a grocery store.
New-Ad43642 points11m ago
if tarbucks, barnes and Nobel, etc Starbucks baristas aren’t baristas then neither are regular Starbucks baristas. They do the same exact thing as us
Gameb0i62 points11m ago
Baristas yes. Just not Starbucks baristas.
gyrony2 points11m ago
I work at large licensed store. When we opened, we had four weeks of training from a black apron barista/ store lead. I probably have as good of training as anyone in a corporate store. That said, training for licensed stores is spotty. It all depends on the circumstance.
imtotallysurebro2 points11m ago
Agreed. I had like 2+ weeks of training before even working a shift when I started as a licensed employee. Now? You’re on oven your first day.
plasticflowerrs2 points11m ago
coming from someone who works at both a tarbucks and a local coffee shop with a “manual” espresso machine, yes! anyone employed at starbucks that makes a drink is well deserving of the barista title. however, there are levels and skills that differ between starbucks baristas and traditional/authentic baristas
Tvdrone162 points11m ago
Of course they are, brothers/sisters on the Frontline with management that couldn't care less about how busy it is.
Expecto_nihilus2 points11m ago
As a former partner and someone who visited Italy and had shots pulled manually and drinks crafted expertly by someone whose entire profession was influenced family generations of coffee makers, no, I don’t think what any of us ever did in what the stores’ current iteration could truly be classified under the work of a barista.
makemeahamsandwich1 points11m ago
Of course.
OkFile68421 points11m ago
Yes
Beefman4531 points11m ago
Yes but not Starbucks baristas
North-Nectarine91381 points11m ago
Of course….
capsule_of_anxiety11 points11m ago
I worked at a Starbucks for 3 years as a barista trainer, now I just got hired at a Starbucks inside a Publix (grocery store). So, ye. Lol
ceoofindica1 points11m ago
Yea! They deserve the world :)
Torirock101 points11m ago
ehh it depends. cuz sometimes they be wild
Wspitsamanda1 points11m ago
i started at a campus one before i went corporate and yes, i consider all my old coworkers actual baristas, just a lot of us weren’t trained right because of the lack of resources (i’m guessing it’s the same for safeway, target, b&n, etc)
International_News931 points11m ago
Well of course they are baristas. Just because someone doesn’t work at a company owned Starbucks store doesn’t make them not a barista. They are making and serving coffee based drinks, thus they are baristas.
nikkicarter11111 points11m ago
Of course.
LtPixelSky1 points11m ago
If my partner numbers don’t work no >:(
Jokes aside uhhh I mean it’s all the same. They still have to do the standard drinks recipe. They get rushes here and there. Still rude customers so yea I would say I consider them as actual Barista. Only that sucks they kind of get the short end of the stick :(
ohhot-pot-ao1 points11m ago
Yes.
sammieduck694201 points11m ago
Barista yes but a "starbucks barista" not entirely, or not the exact same experience as corporate vs kiosk
sarahshark1 points11m ago
I have worked as a Starbucks barista at a licensed store within a SpartanNash grocery store for 10+ years and I can confirm that we are legit. While it is true that some licensed stores do not train their green beans as well as others, we perform the same tasks as corporate on a smaller scale. My store does not participate in mobile ordering (THANK GOD) and we are unable to let customers redeem stars on the mobile app. We are also paid much better than corporate baristas. With tips, I average anywhere between $17-$21/hour.
sh3nan1gans_1 points11m ago
I would say yes, they still do the same things we do. They make coffee, and deal with people. So yes. They are baristas.
LilKaySigs1 points11m ago
They still make coffee don’t they
No_Offer_10881 points11m ago
i don’t really consider any of us baristas simply because we don’t know how to work espresso machines that aren’t superautomatic lol
that doesn’t mean we’re bad food service workers or whatever, we’re just not baristas
RRKWD401 points11m ago
As a licensed store leader I feel that we are often held to a different standard than corporate stores. Our DM is constantly visiting to make sure that we are doing xyz to standard. There have been multiple locations around the area that have been help non compliant and shut down to retrain and hire new staff. With that being said we have seen exponential growth over the last year, nearly double the sales, because of guest that leave a corporate store because of inconsistencies in execution. Example; not knowing the quantity of shots in drinks, out of product, building drinks wrong, wrong amount of syrup in certain drinks/pump dosage (half vs full).
All in all every location stand alone or licensed has the potential to execute every aspect of of being a barista to the highest level. If that is happening depends on the leadership at the store, district and corporate levels. And the willingness of the "partners" to commit to excellence. It's not every everywhere and we all have our faults and make mistakes. We should support all aspects of the brand and help our fellow baristas do the best they can with the information that they have access to.
labraydon71 points11m ago
Yeah. We get the literal certification
Pale_Flower_12621 points11m ago
no because they don’t get the benefits and make up stupid ass drinks
Old_Specific_12331 points11m ago
yes, with no hesitation. licensed stores receive less support too, and still persevere with the added stresses of being a starbucks!! you all are icons ❤️
floofxs21 points11m ago
Yes, why not?
kay-yoh1 points11m ago
As a former Starbucks Team Leader for a licensed store inside of a grocery store, I believe so.
At the end of the day, the tasks and work are the same. Food production and safety, customer service, operations and logistics. Sure, one type may be busier or have heavier traffic than the other, and being in a licensed store comes with work that may not be directly related to Starbucks, but that doesn't mean it isn't the same work.

Our big box store recently went through a full-store remodel, and I am still cool with the leader of the SB now. He told me that now that our licensed store is fully remodeled, they are consistently having higher sales and connection scores that then closest corporate store, which is literally across the intersection from the big box store. I have no reason to distrust this person so, it looks like the licensed team are killing it.
BabeLincoln4201 points11m ago
yes. i worked at one for about a year before i worked at a regular store. Same exact job
hotgirllifestyle1 points11m ago
lmao yeah it’s not their fault they get garbage training, if any
rudebii0 points11m ago
I don’t consider Starbucks baristas “actual” baristas.
Everything is so automated and customized that a Starbucks barista would be lost on a bar at an “actual” coffeehouse.
sysiphusrockstar2 points11m ago
What does a coffeehouse do differently than Starbucks? Other than filling a portafilter and tamping.
rudebii2 points11m ago
hand tamping every shot, the steam wands require more finesse, run cuppings and tastings, better ones start being able to customize blends, etc.
Even semi automatic machines still require baristas to adjust dosing and tamping, knowing how to do that, gauging shots by smell, by sight. The machines the siren uses now can’t make the kind of silky, beautiful microfoam possible with a machine with more barista input. I doubt there’s anyone left in the company that can steam an absolutely perfect pitcher of milk anyway.
I started at the bux when we did all that. I moved onto coffeehouses still holding to the traditional ways of preparing espresso, coincidentally, when the shit like ovens, automatics, etc started. Shortly after, I worked for third wave shops, back when 3rd wave was becoming more prominent.
It’s a different thing than what Starbucks is now.
