New required minimum hours a week? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Fragrant-Pound-9675
Has anyone heard about this? My SM mentioned it to me when I told him I would be submitting a new school availability and that I would have to work a certain amount to remain a partner. He said it was company wide and would take effect sometime in October. I started the conversation asking about seasonal leave for academic semester because I’m a full time university student, and I was hired for an on campus job that goes with my major (but it’s minimum wage). He said they don’t offer that and I said that was okay. I wanted to keep my job at Starbucks and work a day or two every week and have an open availability during winter and summer breaks, but now I feel like I have to put in my two weeks because of this “new requirement”.

My sm said we had to have an availability of 18 hours a week and work 12 hours. And that we could use vacation time to meet the requirement

My shift manager told me that they’re letting go the partners that only work 1-2 days a week & that you have to work a minimum of 12 hours a week when this new policy hits. I’m not sure all the technicals of it but that was the gist. I normally work 15-20 hours during school semester & now I have to be able to meet almost full time availability if I still want those hours while I student teach this fall. 🫤

so if you want 20 hours a week provide 30 available hours - from that you will get scheduled 20 etc.

omg what!! i too am a university student, i already talked to my manager and am transferring to a store near my university (working there during the academic year, then at my home store in breaks and such). i had mentioned that i would only be working 12 hours a week and she said that would be fine so now im stressed. i have an on campus job as a teaching assistant but it’s only about 10 hours of work a week and i need starbucks to make enough money ugh

I know, Im worried that if I have 18 hours of availability my SM will schedule me the full 18 and I will have to choose between my reporting job, my grades, or my Starbucks job. This new rule feels like it’s directly attacking students, it just does not seem very “Starbucks-y” :(((

yeah, that’s my fear as well. i do enjoy my job for the most part and i would hate to have to leave and finding a new job seems like a hassle but it’s looking like i won’t even have a choice at this point

This policy was in effect when I was a SM - if you only want 12 hours a week that's totally fine - BUT you have to be able to provide 150% of available time that they can chose your 12 hours from. For example you need to provide 18 AVAILABLE hours if you want 12. if you wanted 40 hours you would need to provide 60 available hours etc.
