Over the past 4 months I have been working with my SM to try and promote to a SSV. Currently we already have too many SSVs at my store, but we were essentially getting the little stuff out of the way so that when a position does open, I would be ready. It started with learning the play caller tool on the iPad (which we don't even use lol), to shadowing other SSVs do the pull to thaw for mornings and nights, counting drawers, etc. Now, almost any time I'm on a shift, it's kinda expected of me to do the pull. I understand that this is necessary to learn to become a SSV, but the part that bugs me is i'm not getting paid as a SSV to do the work of one, especially when I'm not even guaranteed this position when one opens up. To this point i've sucked it up and went along with it, because I really want to show my SM that i'm more than capable for it. Today, I walked into my shift knowing that my GM will be having a meeting with all of our SSVs, but not my SM. As I'm clocking in, my SM asks if im excited to run the floor today, since all the SSVs will be in a meeting. I'm a little bit baffled by this because I have little to no prior experience to running breaks, assigning barista positions, and making sure everything is running smoothly. Again, not to mention the fact that I'm not getting paid as a SSV to do the work of one. My SM was on the floor the whole time, just standing around as i'm scrambling to make sure everything is going right. The part that sets me off is that I was expected to run the floor even after all the SSVs got back. I'm a little too concerned to voice my opinion on how I feel used at my store to my SM in fear of them thinking im not ready for a SSV position. So I dont really know what to do. Are these normal steps to getting promoted?

Edit: grammar

You should NOT be touching money as a barista - that’s a huge no.

The pull is technically not a SSV only task. SSVs are responsible for ensuring it gets done, but it can be delegated to baristas.

I have personally ran the floor on a couple rare occasions we didn’t have a SSV on the floor (running late and our SM was doing admin, in a meeting, etc) and I didn’t mind because it was voluntary, not expected. To do it for the meeting is one thing. To still do it when the SSV is back? I would refuse.

its just been a thing at my store that you dont do the pull unless you're a SSV 🤷🏻‍♂️ for a hot second we werent even able to use our numbers to log into the ipod unless you were a SSV

I had a shift from another store come in and ask if I was a ssv after I told her I did the pull too and that I used my numbers for it so I'm not sure what it is but I'm hoping to become an ssv soon 😂

as a new ssv (promoted like 2 months ago), absolutely not acceptable. we just had to wait for me to graduate before promoting and the MOST that they had for me do was watch a shift do the pull ONCE. i would definitely tell your sm that you're not comfortable performing shift duties and running the floor without the position
