was told by corporate we can't put up a pride flag (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by NeonCloudAstro
but what do i see on the OFFICIAL starbucks partners instagram today? a partner standing in front of a pride flag in their store! wtf...
ladysingtheblues 34 points 11m ago
Our district manager (in like a fairly big city) told us we couldn't decorate for pride bc we "might get harassed". Meanwhile Starbucks in much smaller Southern towns do it anyway. And you'd think that with us being the ones who'd actually deal with it, and most of us being visibly queer anyway, that'd be our decision.
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 16 points 11m ago
ours told us that it’s bc of uniformity 🤷🏻‍♂️. but honestly whatever excuses they have are complete bullshit
sammieduck69420 3 points 11m ago
Put up the flag, wait for the “uniformity” claim and then show all the stored you can with flags in their lobby. I don’t care what anyone says, if they’re true and valid I will respect it. But the second the start to go low before I do, I will go low however is necessary
heyitsmaria24 10 points 11m ago
We still have our pride flag up. District manager is okay with it. Surprised corporate isn’t. It’s weird they told you it wasn’t allowed anywhere at the store.
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 6 points 11m ago
it’s a bit ridiculous isn’t it? starbucks pretends to be all progressive but won’t allow us to put up a pride flag? bunch of horse shit
th3_thing 7 points 11m ago
Leave up anyway. If they start crap, call the news. Document everything. Profit
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 2 points 11m ago
our manager is the one that took it down so i don’t think that’s the best course of action
th3_thing 2 points 11m ago
Email (for documentation purposes) your Regional Manager. See if you actually need to take it down. If yes, call the news. If no, ask your boss if you can put it up again
Tvdrone16 1 points 11m ago
Really? Surprised? They banned us from wearing BLM gear during the George Floyd murder ordeal. Surprised lol
hotgirllifestyle 0 points 11m ago
this also just really isn’t true. we were literally encouraged to wear BLM clothing and were given starbucks partnered BLM shirts to wear
Tvdrone16 3 points 11m ago

..after the backlash
heyitsmaria24 0 points 11m ago
I wasn’t there for that. I’m sorry if my lack of that time period made you upset?
Vilali -1 points 11m ago
Not everyone has been a partner since then. Chill on the hostility.
Tvdrone16 1 points 11m ago
No hostility, but it was in the news
Vilali -1 points 11m ago
Not everyone sees the same news or has access to it at the same level. Assuming everyone was aware of it is ignorant. I'm not saying that Starbucks doing that was right--it wasn't--but don't jump down someone's throat for not knowing.

Edit: Nice dirty delete(s). Probably protecting your precious comment karma because you knew you were wrong. 🙄

I live in PHX and a store has a pride and a trans flag up !!
pleutparty 4 points 11m ago
We were told the same thing. We were also told no stores will be allowed any decorations or flags yet, like you pointed out, they're in all kinds of marketing images. If you're going to tell us no stores can decorate, find, but at least do it consistently. It makes the stores that can't feel crappy.
smolspag 3 points 11m ago
no flags yet but it makes pride day cups… (of course its not *explicitly* stated)
Necessary_Low939 3 points 11m ago
Lol now I understand why they won’t order us pride shirts
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 5 points 11m ago
the pride shirts this year sucked anyways lol
Necessary_Low939 1 points 11m ago
True lol
Vilali 1 points 11m ago
We got pride shirts but someone took mine. So I have to squeeze into an xl if I want to wear it. I know who exactly did it, too.
Necessary_Low939 2 points 11m ago
That’s messed up
RepresentativeRan 2 points 11m ago
yeah that's def weird bc at my store we blocked out our front windows with the rainbow and trans flags...
ConfusionDisastrous8 2 points 11m ago
We have a pride flag up all the time.
persona-2 2 points 11m ago
Was it in the window or in the store? There’s an actual policy about no flags in the windows. If you just had it in the store though it should have been okay.
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 1 points 11m ago
it was in the window, but we were told it wasn’t allowed anywhere in the store
persona-2 2 points 11m ago
Put it on your community board. I don’t think there are any official policies besides in date and not offensive on there.
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 1 points 11m ago
it’s a full sized flag though. too big for the community board
Wonderful-Put-5972 1 points 11m ago
I don't know where these decorations are that you speak of. And you only highlighted two months out of 12! Our store wasn't even allowed a Christmas tree so I think it's just an attempt to maintain uniformityl of the displays and decorations in stores.
ittybittybakerkitty 1 points 11m ago
We have a diy pride wreath still up in july
sirencursedwithrage 1 points 11m ago
we have ours up ... do it anyway and report him for discrimination
fuwaldah 1 points 11m ago
Can you elaborate on what "told by corporate" means?
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 1 points 11m ago
first our dm said we couldn’t have it up. then one of my partners called prc and asked about it and they told him it’s against corporate policy and that if he knows of any stores that have it up he should tell them so they can handle it
fuwaldah 1 points 11m ago
There you go.

Never ask permission.
Strange_Salad_9695 1 points 11m ago
We keep our pride and trans flags up in our store in Greenville despite discrimination from the community.
NeonCloudAstro [OP] 1 points 11m ago
it’s not about discrimination it’s bc of corporate policy
Strange_Salad_9695 1 points 11m ago
Right in spite of both of these factors we have ours up. However our SM had approval and both our new and old DM have not said anything so perhaps the policy isn't as clear cut as they make it seem.

This is gonna get a lotta resistance but I can see both sides. If a corporation allows one group to celebrate "their" month then they must let every group celebrate "their" month. There is no way to keep these decorations uniform and honor the individual groups. Consider the time involved to decorate and undo, cleaning around decorations, safety measures, etc. That's a lot of extra consideration for something that should be done at home. I hope everyone can see this from a perspective of maintaining a corporate identity and being fair and reasonable to EVERYONE.

I am not home phobic or anti anything except guns and hate groups. Wasn't Pride Month in June? FYI July is Minority Group Mrntal Health Awareness month and French Heritage Month and August is National Civility Month! 💛
Vilali 3 points 11m ago
July is also disability awareness month. Really tired of that one getting brushed aside.
Wonderful-Put-5972 1 points 11m ago
Thank you for the reminder.
AdSuspicious1888 1 points 11m ago
For one july is disability month put on by the ada like pride it's a government recognized month for two Starbucks already celebrates pride month and black history month so there is already deco. For two all businesses change the deco once a month from new items to limited time so nothing added there either so I really don't see any point you made.
