If a customer gives you a tip with a note in a card, are we supposed to share it with the other baristas on my shift? (self.starbucksbaristas)

No that’s definitely just for you to keep
Mickey_Fan51 [OP] 129 points 11m ago
Cool! Thanks for replying. One of my coworkers was asking about it and wanted to know if the customer put a tip in the card and hinted about me sharing and I said no (there was actually a nice tip) and all it was a note of encouragement and thanking me for working hard because that day we were short handed at a store in the airport and it’s getting busier.
HappyMelonGirl 74 points 11m ago
Yeah definitely keep it, I let my coworkers bully me into putting the Christmas money a regular gave me in the jar even though it was in a card for me 🥲 but no, if it's handed to you that way, it is completely yours to keep.
turpentinetears 2 points 11m ago
That happened to me. In a sealed envelope with my name on it and they made me share. I was afraid to get written up or fired though.
HappyMelonGirl 2 points 11m ago
ME TOO I was like lmao it isn't worth it 😭
lily-amber 159 points 11m ago
DONT EVEN OPEN IT TIL YOURE AT HOME.
HappyBarista 121 points 11m ago
If it’s in a sealed envelope with your name on it, that stuff is for you only!!

If a customer hands you a tip, that has to go into the tip jar.
Mickey_Fan51 [OP] 53 points 11m ago
That’s what I thought. As long as a card is addressed to you only with a tip inside then it’s all yours and it’s up to you if you want to share or not. If it’s addressed to the entire shift/store then yeah, everyone shares.

That was the rule at my old store. We also weren't very strict about it. Like if a customer didn't know the baristas name but wrote "girl at window" we'd let whoever it was for keep it. Or if a customer handed us like $2 or something or made it clear it was for a specific person then we'd let them keep it
HappyBarista 4 points 11m ago
Yes that’s right
OneRoseDark -29 points 11m ago
this is not a policy. my SM and i went on a documentation hunt for it and that's not written into any of our policies. technically all tips must be pooled.
HappyBarista 30 points 11m ago
No. When someone gives me a card in a sealed envelope with my name on it, there’s NO way that’s for everyone. This used to happen at Christmas time at my old store. The customers who did this gave out cards to all of the morning crew. Those were personal gifts for us as individuals.
idkcassie 23 points 11m ago
but if it’s in a card addressed to you alone, it is considered a gift for you, personally. it cannot be proved that it was a “tip”, as they did not put it in the tip jar or hand you cash alone.
OneRoseDark -31 points 11m ago
if it's money given to you in the course of doing your job, it's a tip.

I agree with whoever said to not open the card until you get home, because what they don't find out doesn't hurt them. but saying it's "considered a gift" implies that Starbucks is doing the considering, and I'm just saying that's not accurate. Starbucks considers it a tip, and tips must be pooled. Therefore... maybe repeating incorrect information is not a great service.

One time when I was closing by myself I got a $200 tip from a lady becuase I comforted her while she was crying and I gave her a free pastry. I most definitely did not share that since I was alone, and I didn't even realize how big it was becuase she just slipped it into my pocket 😩
Difficult-Resist3780 14 points 11m ago
Isnt it illegal/against policy to close alone?
emileeavi 40 points 11m ago
Oh I have no idea. I was in a Starbucks inside of a city market lol we also weren't allowed to get tips so 😂
okaybutall 18 points 11m ago
Yeah licensed stores make people close alone all the time
lilpears 10 points 11m ago
me closing target starbucks alone rn 😭😭😭
ElijahLordoftheWoods 5 points 11m ago
Licensed stores make them solo entire shifts, those poor tarbucks barisras have to ring and bar solo a lot

That's awesome! I was given a "Holiday Card" by one of my favorites. He handed me a sealed envelope with my name on it. A beautiful note and $200 inside ☺️ Only told my Manager who advised me to keep it and suggested I didn't share the story. No longer a Partner, so there's my story 💚
michy808 1 points 11m ago
I had to open my store by myself after my opening barista called in sick on short notice(and yeah I know we’re not supposed to open or close by ourselves) one of the regular morning customers felt bad for me and tipped me $20. I asked my manager later on if there was a policy on tips and he said since he doesn’t get tips it depends on what the store agrees on. In that case he thought I should keep the tip especially since I was the only there at the time and handled the situation well. My
Store agrees that if the customer hands you a tip and says it’s specifically for you, you can keep or add it to the tip jar
Zealousideal-Star448 11 points 11m ago
I’d say keep it. But don’t make a big deal of it. It’s obviously ment to be only for you. If it has your name on it then yes, keep it, but if the note is kinda for the whole store then put it in the jar
agigante02 10 points 11m ago
as long as it was given to you in an envelope with your name written on it, then yes the tip is soley yours:)
reinadelastrigoi 3 points 11m ago
I got a $100 for myself and my DTO barista today. I stupidly asked if I my SSV could split it and mentioned that it was in an envelope…nope. Had to put it in the tip jar. I so could’ve used that $50…
Praxlyn 2 points 11m ago
oh no 😭 im pretty sure that ssv was in the wrong too considering that it was in an envelope
reinadelastrigoi 1 points 11m ago
I did check our store group chat and my SM had said we couldn’t even have if it was in the envelope. :/
Toomanyboringpeople 2 points 11m ago
If it’s in a card you should be good. I will say typically if someone tries to give us personal tips we’re not allowed to accept it, we have to put it in the jar, but ngl as a shift manager my baristas know I’ll look the other way if they get personal tips so they don’t have to share 😂
Inevitable_Emu_221 2 points 11m ago
If “this is a gift for you” then it’s yours!
HamiltonPolka 2 points 11m ago
If they wanted your coworkers to have it then they would have put it in tip jar
Fun-Reference3618 2 points 11m ago
Definitely just for you!
turpentinetears 1 points 11m ago
Is there a written policy on this somewhere? I couldn’t find anything on the hub
verdeuce 1 points 11m ago
Yeah If it’s in a card you get it. It’s a gift
florencelovelace 1 points 11m ago
yup! as long as it’s sealed with your name on it then it’s all yours (:
fuwaldah -8 points 11m ago
Technically, yes. But just don't mention it.

Lots of people on this sub will tell you that as long as it's in an envelope with your name on it, it's fine, but there is actually no written rule about this.
Beautiful-Director 3 points 11m ago
I would have to go searching for it but Im pretty sure there is a written policy for it
fuwaldah -2 points 11m ago
I'm pretty sure there is not.
