So, my store has a lock that requires a 4 digit pin to eneter the bathrooms and honestly it kinda feels partially useless. The reason I say this is due to the fact we give the code to anyone and everyone that walks in. I remember I asked my shift what was the point to putting a code to open up the bathroom if we would tell anyone it anyway. They responded with "if anyone looks off to keep them out", but honestly I haven't seen anyone denied the bathroom code yet. Anyone have any ideas why we do this feels kinda stupid.

Helps to keep drug users from shooting up in the bathroom.

But it kinda hard to judge what someone gonna do to the bathroom 😂 if we judge based on looks all the time
FlowerCurious5816 points11m ago
Not judging on looks, but if you are insecure about doing something shady you won’t ask for the number.

Not insecure(and not the person to be doing anything shady as well), I was wondering why we just hand to code out to everyone and if so why do we have the lock in the first place seems counter intuitive

i worked at a store where that was a problem, if anything it was more of an obstacle for the paramedics trying to get to the person who overdosed in it

Well now that have a blue light that goes off in the office when someone is in there too long, so hopefully if that happens we can recognize there is an issue and hopefully save them.

the number of incident reports i had to file for bathroom related incidents plummeted when we got this lock. they were also dramatically cleaner.

I see, yeah it funny because it was last week when one of my coworkers went to restock the bathroom and found a crack pipe and had to call non emergency...we close at 10:30p after that we had to stay until 12. Ig it probably the neighborhood because where my store is really shady.

One of you should be putting in the code.. that's why it's useless lol
Straight-Complaint-7 [OP]3 points11m ago
Yeah I suggested the idea, but I was to be meet with sarcasm.

It is somewhat of a deterrent but more of awareness I think anyway. If someone “looks off” you don’t keep them out judging solely by physical appearance, but if an incident occurs you have someone who can say yes I gave that person access to the bathroom.

So originally the locks were introduced to prevent “non customers” from using our bathrooms. It led to a huge discrimination issue when people were being denied access to the bathroom for being perceived as “non customers” and so Starbucks as a company removed the locks in most stores and basically discouraged denying codes in the ones they didn’t remove. Some districts are returning to using the locks though with the increase of issues related to the bathrooms and customers.

It used to be that a lot of stores had these locks and only gave out the code upon purchase. Then the Philly scandal happened and the rule was anyone was allowed to use the restrooms to prevent from bias, paying guest or not. Covid then had a lot of stores close restrooms to non-employees I think. I've seen some articles that since Howard Schultz is back, there's talk of going back to customer-only bathrooms because of safety concerns instead of anyone-can-use, but I'm not at Starbucks anymore to confirm.

Yeah honestly I guess making people pay to use the bathroom is a good idea but for the unfortunate of the community 😬 idk what to tell them then...
Unlikely_Turnip_94691 points11m ago
right?! in my city most bathrooms have codes bc of the large unhoused population, and a lot of stores can’t even tell you or will straight up give you the wrong code. you have to buy something and the code is printed on the bottom of the receipt. it is so immoral on a bunch of different levels, being able to use the bathroom is a right, not a privilege!
yungfroggie2 points11m ago
i live in an area where we get a lot of unhoused people wandering and i agree it’s immoral but it’s also for our safety :/ we have a lot of people that have gotten violent or stolen from us that are banned from the area, and we’ve had people either OD or leave needles and pools of blood on the floor which are biohazards.
