Yo! So for some background, I work at a kiosk inside a grocery store. Our system is pretty old, we can’t load/reload the cards with a barcode on the back, but it’s still useable.
Yesterday I was working a closer and this lady ordered some drinks, and then tried buying a cup using her stars. She had around 387 stars or so on her account.
So, I tell her “ma’am, I’m really sorry but you don’t have enough stars for this. You need 400 for a free merchandise item, and you only have 387.”
She responds asking me if I can just “charge her the difference” meaning I use the stars that she DOES have, and then just charge her the difference of the stars she wouldn’t have.
I tell her that’s not possible (because I can’t even select the reward.) and she responds with “I’m from San Diego and they used to do that for me all the time.”
And I just tell her “Well I’m not able to do that here. Maybe at a stand-alone, but not here. Our systems too old for that.” I showed her my POS’ screen to prove that I was doing what I could, and she just asked if there was any way I could override it so she could get the cup (lol). I said no and she eventually just left.
I honestly doubt that someone out there in San Diego did that, but I do just wanna know if that’s possible? I know Starbucks rides hard for their customers, so I’m just kinda curious.
The strange thing is that the POS wouldn’t let me select any rewards. Again, she had over 300 stars, but the system wouldn’t allow me to pick any of the like 50/150/200 reward tiers at all. It’s like her stars were locked behind something. I was wondering if anyone knew why.

I definitely don’t think that’s possible, unless she means they ring her up for something cheap that would still get her the points, have her pay for that, and then she has 400?

No I’m from San Diego, you have to have 400 stars. At ALL Starbucks at least in the USA…. 400 = a free cup up to $20 value and ifs it’s more that $20 then you can charge the remainder. If they don’t have 400 stars then they haven’t earned enough for the cup. It’s LITERALLY IN THE RULES on the app she can’t read obviously

Right i just mean that maybe someone has her make two purchases, one to bump her up to 400 and then the second to redeem the 400 and she thinks that’s “paying the difference”
streetratroadie8 points11m ago
Nah, it’s not your system. You CAN charge the difference only if she has enough stars and the merchandise is worth more than $20.

Stars only are clickable if the correct items are scanned. So if she wanted a drink, the 50 would become clickable. But if she only scanned a cup, then the rest of her stars won’t pop up bc there’s nothing they can be redeemed for.

Oh whaaat? I didn’t know it was a real thing. My best friend (works at a stand-alone) told me it wasn’t, but something told me it was possible.
Also, thank you for clarifying on the stars, I was worried out system was acting out again!
irritablegarlic3 points11m ago
yes it’s only if the item is worth more than $20, because the stars only cover up to $20. so if it’s $25 the person has to pay the $5 difference.

I feel like we should clarify that you pay the difference ONLY after using all 400 stars. You can’t use 387 stars for merchandise and pay the difference.

Maybe she had 400 stars but chose something over the highest monetary value (which I can’t remember now) and she paid the difference that’s the only way.
victorious_gem2 points11m ago
yeah she would've needed to have had 400 stars already to technically get the cup for free, I don't understand what she's talking about. also if she didn't order anything where she could use 25 points for an extra shot or 50 points for a pastry, it wouldn't pop up as an option

Probably just confused when she paid the difference in the past **after** using 400 stars.
Like she bought something that cost $25, used 400 stars to get $20 off then paid the $5 difference.
Probably thought she did pay the difference in the past just did not realize that it was just the overage not paying for stars.
