coworkers who won't do anything - grande rant(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lovey12120
i'm getting kind of peeved with one of my coworkers at my location. most of my shifts are pre-closing so i usually just come in, assign to a register and get started on pre-closing tasks. generally, my shift will take over on reg until they need to start the pull and other things so i can get breakdown and stuff like that done asap. i think that's pretty general across multiple locations (i could be wrong). i love pre-closing and i'm very efficient at it and can get it done pretty quickly.
however, everytime i see that i pre-close and this one coworker closes, a deep sigh escapes my body because here we go again. here we go with nothing getting done because she won't do her job. we'll call her "jane." jane stands on her phone when she should be working. jane walks away from the bar when there's a line of drinks. jane goes to the back to be on her phone some more. jane takes 30+ minutes to sweep the cafe. jane refuses to help customers and will ignore them until i realize they need help. jane leaves me at bar and reg and warming alone while the shift is in the back doing the pull. jane will leave the cafe unattended when both me and the shift step in the back to do necessary tasks. jane takes 5+ bathroom breaks a shift that last more than 10 minutes.
like i get it. it's a job that barely pays but we're still here to work. i usually am very good at pre-closing and can get the tasks done quickly and efficiently so that the closers have it easy. however, whenever jane works, i always miss at least 1-3 things and i feel bad for my SSV but i can't do my job efficiently if i'm stuck doing jane's and mine. i want to talk to my shift who usually closes but she LOVES jane. one time, i worked 9 hours because jane decided to call out and someone had to close. it wasn't like she was sick because the shift told me that jane had told her the day before she was thinking of calling out. she said "jane is so funny for that." i've heard she's either quitting soon or transferring and i feel bad for looking forward to her resigning but she has an awful work ethic and it's so frustrating to work with her. and i do understand that at the end of the day its just a job, but its still our job and i don't want to get in trouble because i couldn't complete tasks due to a coworker's poor work ethic

that’s a tough situation. Jane sounds incompetent. Have you tried nicely pointing her in the direction of tasks? Like “hey, can you go do this while I do this?”

i would but she’s a little passive aggressive towards me and she’s also been working longer than i have so it feels kind of weird to be like “can you do this” when i’ve been here only months and she’s been here for more than a year

If she is leaving soon then ask her to do things and don’t worry about how she feels about it. It also doesn’t matter who is newer tasks need to be done so respectfully saying “I need to break down the left machine, are you able to help with cold bar?” is totally fine. And if she makes a smart comment why does it matter? Her personality stinks in that regard so don’t let it bother you.

she sounds terrible and I'm sorry you gotta deal with that. don't feel bad for looking forward to her resignation, i would be ecstatic

ugh i have a jane that the store manager just adores for some reason. isn’t it so fun taking orders while doing every single drink and praying the customer at the window doesn’t say anything about how long it takes?
maybe bring it up to your store manager or another supervisor. if she’s quitting like others said don’t mind telling her what to do because you won’t see her again lol. “hey i really need some help out here” “hey can you just help me with those few drinks” “can you come out here and grab reg?” and if she makes a big stink about it hopefully you have more to tell your manager lol

You can ask your SM to put someone other than Jane on closing because she doesn't seem interested in working & you need someone efficient to help you close.
Your SM can then A) Schedule Jane when its busier during the day where she can't just dick off her whole shift and get you a better closing partner B) Talk with Jane and figure out why she's not doing her job, also talk with the shift to coach her to do her job. C) both

it’s funny because jane will be scheduled for a mid shift sometimes and we’ll get super busy (esp on weekends) and she’ll just walk away and leave me by myself at bar. so at least i’m not stuck doing like a billion things at once. but now i’m stuck between running from hot bar to cold bar to get things done.
but i’ll try to talk to my sm about it. it’s just that she gets away with a lot unfortunately :/

Maybe it's an authority problem as well if they aren't on her for being... useless lol then she'll just think it's okay to be that way. I'm sorry you're going through that

Sounds like SSV needs to start telling her what to do exactly and also that she got x minutes to get it done so better get moving

How i combat this is I literally would say im backed up or I need help—I can’t do three tasks at once or I also just stopped working so they get the hint. If u preclosing, don’t worry, u ain’t closing so the supervisor is gonna have to figure it out at night time and take the hint they gotta start coaching. If they get in trouble, they won’t sit back anymore. U can’t win against these people by complaining to sm or anything and especially when supervisor on her side for some odd reason (friends maybe?) so u just gotta play their game. U being so worked up for no reason is just gonna take a toll on ur body and mind and make u hate working. It’s ok to celebrate that that lazy fcker is leaving.
