Store closed early due to hazard, will i still get paid? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Chemical-Less
Hey guys, hoping someone can help me with the policy for this because im not finding any good answers online. Today my store closed because of a hazard (i dont want to give many details because ik my coworkers browse here sometimes-- but it was "could kill you" dangerous). I was already in the store and i was literally due to clock in when they announced it would be closing for the day for repairs

when i asked if we would be getting paid for our missed hours, my manager told us that we could either take a shift at another store or use our SICK HOURS if we wanted the money, but otherwise we wouldnt be getting paid

i need this money, and it was of no fault of the employees that the store had to close, does anyone know if this is actually true? What are my options here? i feel we should be getting hazard or catastrophe pay or something, as we were literally willing to work that day, but physically couldnt. taking a shift at another store isnt an option for me as i have no car.

if someone knows ANYTHING on this policy it would be well appreciated

thanks in advance

Short answer: No.

Long answer... maybe, if you work for it. Starbucks policy says no. However, the fact that they are offering you sick hours shows they are willing to play fast and loose with the rules. Sick hours cannot be used for store closures. If you have lots of sick hours... do it. If you don't, call your DM and ask about getting paid, specifically mentioning that you were told you could use sick hours. Tell them you don't have sick hours, and it doesn't seem fair those that do are getting paid and you are not.

Wait, pretty sure this constitutes cat pay.

Only if the DM or RD approves it.

Well, yeah. But that’s what cat pay is for. I’ve never heard of them denying it if someone is willing to work, was scheduled to work, and they couldn’t because the store was closed.

It happens all the time. It's at the discretion of the RD.

I do know that had you clocked in you would have been paid for the rest of your shift. Like others have stated it’s not policy to pay when the store closes for shifts that were schedule but not worked. The other advice given in this thread is good.

During the Texas storm when our stores were closed we were given cat pay. I’m not sure if that was a unique situation though. But I’ve been told by my sm and dm before we get paid if store closes due to a hazard. I’d talk to your DM maybe.
