how much trouble am I in for over time ? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ittybittybakerkitty
So I was told there was hours available to work and I just got two kittens that have some medical bills and some credit card debt so I jumped right on that and ended up going an hour and a half over time, me and my shift both didn't realize. How much trouble are we/I in? I have extreme anxiety and low-key obsessively freaking out

It has to be approved by the DM. It’s over, though. You already did it. The SM COULD get scolded over it, and shit rolls downhill, but I’m sure they will understand and you won’t lose your job over it. Don’t sweat it.

Also, depending on the circumstances, it may have been necessary and the DM won’t care either.

Thanks, is it possible for it to not be approved? Like I won't get paid for that work I did?

they are legally required to pay for the time you worked, the most they could do is write you up and stuff, but you already worked the time, they have to pay you for it.

I don’t know that they could even write you up for it. You will get paid for what you worked. I can’t imagine it’ll be more than “pay attention to your hours”

page 19 of the starbucks partner guide
“Overtime hours must be approved in advance by a manager. A partner who fails to gain approval for overtime will be paid at the applicable overtime rate for such time worker, but may be subject to corrective action for failing to obtain prior approval.”

However, i also doubt it will be anything serious. if your manager is any amount of understanding im sure they’ll understand that you were stressed about debt and medical bills.

You won’t get in trouble. If anything, the DM will say something to your SM and your SM will make a general announcement to be careful about OT. Honestly I worked at stores that didn’t care at all about OT though, some SMs and DMs would rather a couple people go into OT than the stores be short staffed and numbers suffer

If this is the first time chances are high that you will just get a coaching conversation (along with your shift) that you need to be more mindful of your hours. If it becomes a habit then it will result in a write up.

we get in trouble for overtime?? i’ve worked for the bux for about 2 years and food service for 5 and that’s so freaking weird

Overtime that wasn't approved

eight full hours is way different than an hour and a half

Former shift and 7 year barista here! Your manager will most likely just talk to you about it. You always want to get OT approved but it was less than a couple hours so you’ll be fine. And yes you’ll still get paid..no write up or anything. It happens. Just be careful and double check next time :)
