i am a strict opener but i took a shift for a partner who had to call out last minute (thankfully 2 hours before her shift so i had time to get ready and come in on time). this is the second time i’ve ever done a closing shift… but i will honestly start doing the undertow thing when i have my next opening (tomorrow. at 5:30am 💀 rip my soul)

So to start off my ~ lovely ~ 8 hour shift day, I got a woman in the drive thru who asked me if i wanted a card to see what she’s about and i said sure not knowing what to expect. I took the card and saw that it was an invitation to the church 🙄🙄
Anyways, 5 mins later one of my coworkers comes (a green bean) in and i was like “i got invited to the church of jesus christ” and he was like “oh no whatever am i going to do when i go to hell bc i didn’t accept jesus as god?? we’re all sinners!”
then afterwards, i asked if my coworkers wanted an undertow…. they were like “what’s that?” so i gave 2 green beans an undertow and they really liked it!
finally, to end my day i got my nails done at the starbucks bar nail salon. i say they were prestigious when handling my fingers 😆

after the undertow, there was a small intersession of a family who were road tripping from nevada (they did get a lot in their order but what comes next made it totally worth it) and there were 3 girls in the back of the car. while doing dto/dtr, one of the girls smiled at me real big and waved so i smiled and waved back and gave her 2 peace signs. highlight of my day honestly

my one regret is not drinking coffee today. i had 2 evolution super greens blended with ice only. but now that im back home after doing a closing shift, i regret not drinking coffee bc i forgot that i still have to clean and cook and study… and could’ve really used the coffee 🥲

What is an undertow?

if you look at the pictures, it’s in order of the writing. so an undertow is going to be the third picture. it’s layered and you’re supposed to drink it all in one shot kind of like a vodka shot for example. you’re supposed to feel hot and cold at the same time. it’s really good!

I've seen this a few times lately. Why does this sub assemble their undertows into the shot glasses? Are you taking the shot from the glass? I always assemble the whole thing in a short cup. Even an unused ceramic mug would work, but why the shot glasses that are used on the bar. Seems unsanitary even tho you hopefully clean them afterward.

oh god no. i made the undertows in a short cup as well. i just made this one in the shot glass to take a pic and send it to my bf to show him what i do at work (he knows nothing about coffee and i’ve been teaching him). but i didn’t drink that one out of the shot glass. this one i ended up dumping in a short cup, stirring and drinking. the pic was just to show the layering as you can’t do that in a short cup. but generally, that is where i will make it.

some people start off with syrups/sauces (optional). personally i like to do 2 pumps of mocha.
then you’ll add in the milk of your choice.
you’ll then put the cup under the espresso machine so that the machine can pull shots into the cup.
you’ll get a spoon (the super big ones used to take off foam from milk). some people are particular and say you need to put that spoon in ice before you do the next step. but personally, i skip it.
you’ll then prep the spoon by flipping it over so that the rounded part is up. you’re going to carefully place it half an inch into the cup (upside down… the spoon that is).
then you’ll pull 2 blonde ristretto shots
make sure that the shots are pulling on the spoon.
it should be layered. do not stir or swirl. just take it in all in one go as a shot. you’ll feel hot and cold at the same time. it’s great.

only at the best place in town called the starbucks nail salon! make sure you go to the DRIVE-THRU BAR section. if you get it at the cafe/mobile bar section or even the warming section, it won’t be as good. trust me, based on personal experience 🥲

The undertow was a pre rush ritual in my time and area (Atlanta 2010-2014). I preferred mine with vanilla and there was no joy like introducing a green bean to the magic.

God I hated undertows 😂 but I’m a dinosaur (2007-2015) and we only had espresso, which I hate the taste of. But I remember the relief of having a good shift.
