My store is so insanely under staffed (especially at nights) and since i’m one of the only closers out of four, I literally cannot call in. No like literally I tried to call in because I had a migraine so bad I could barely see and my shift just said “Can you just come in at five?” What? You’re telling me there is literally no one else who can close so that means I had to suffer for four hours to try and close a starbucks. I’m so burnt out, I’ve been working six days a week eight hours a day with horrible customers and a barely functioning closing since I was never trained to close! The training is so bad the staffing and scheduling is non existing. Can’t wait till i’m promoted to customer in two weeks!

Yes, you can call in. You're just not doing that.

This. Don't let conditioning of an unethical work environment allow you to be bullied into submission.

yeah you’re right. it was my first time ever calling in and I had no idea what to say at that so I just gave in

I hope I don't sound like I'm blaming you. I'm not. The system in our country is designed to make you feel guilty for calling in. I'm not even blaming your supervisor, even though what they said was wrong.

But you can call in. Next time, just say no.

If you get flustered making calls to management like that it helps to write down what you’re calling for and some sticking points. It sounds dumb, but for someone like me with horrible phone anxiety it keeps me calm and collected and keeps me from saying yes to everything.

no. just say no. you can't work. you're sick. you don't have to give a reason at all. and it is their job to find coverage.(if you're sick). take care of yourself.

think of it this way,
if you died, they'd find someone to cover your shift wouldn't they?

companies do not care about you, sorry. stop caring about them more than yourself.

call out.

a fellow migraine sufferer

No need to feel bad or have anxiety about it (I know, easier said than done) you’re not at fault for being unable to work a shift due to a migraine. Don’t let your job control your life you deserve better than that!

Sorry it’s been hard at your store lately that always feels bad.

All of these comments are making me feel so empowered I’ve also been guilty when I say no. 🥹

Don’t not let them make you feel like if you can’t then the store can’t function. If you can’t because you aren’t feeling well then the store can close. It’s not
your responsibility to make up for the lack of staff.

bro i feel you. i open with one shift. but i get super nauseous in the morning and can end up throwing up all morning, but i’ll still suck it up and go in because i know they probably won’t be able to find someone to cover at 4 am 😭
