Help demoting myself (self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m a fairly new ASM, about 2 months into the roll. I really enjoy the team of partners that I’m with and my SM is incredibly supportive and helpful. Even though my experience has been a good one, it just feels like this job isn’t aligning with where I’m at in my life. I’m 20 years old, I want to go back to school, and I want to be able to actually enjoy my life outside of work and not have it consume me when I’m off the clock. I just feel terrible having the conversation about going back to being a shift with my SM and DM. It’s embarrassing in a way, especially after the time and energy they’ve invested in me. Any tips on what to say to my SM/DM? Is this even the right decision?

As a previous ASM and SM who later stepped down to shift myself, my advice is to just have the conversation with them. Hopefully your DM is one of the cool ones who will respect your vulnerability and honesty. Being unprepared to be an SM is a terrible experience and I've seen many new SMs terminated for petty reasons. I'm a shift now and it's much less pressure and I have more fun. You always have the option to try and move back up later. Also dunno if you're doing Scap but ASU as an SM /ASM was pretty difficult to manage so being a shift really gave me the flexibility to adjust my hours with my class work which helped me to graduate on time. Good luck to you!

You might frame it that way - say that you really enjoy working for the company, but you want to prioritize going back to school, and changing your roles would allow you to do that. Good luck with sorting this out!

Being an ASM isn't fun. It's the hardest role in the company. I would wait it out until you become a manager and see if you like it more.
