Hey everyone! Today I had a lady come through drive through ordering two slices of banana bread, one warmed and the other in the plastic. I told her that we weren’t allowed to serve food in the plastic because i was always told to always take the food out of the plastic. after she left, i asked my other partners on the floor weather we were allowed to serve food in the plastic, but none of them had answers. if any of you know i’d be very grateful!!
TLDR: does anyone know if we can serve food in the plastic if the customer requests?
TootsiePuff29124 points11m ago
if they request that, yes 👍
RavenMcG57 points11m ago
If it requested we do at our store.
Mea-fae_Owl7345 points11m ago
I partner at my store called the pcc to ask for clarification on this and they said that policy is to not leave it in its packaging but if they request it then yes. They could have been blowing smoke up my ass but it sounds legit
highspeed06 [OP]15 points11m ago
Thank you!! yeah i guess i get to do a very embarrassing apology if she comes back and ordered it again… (maybe i’ll just pretend it never happened) and thank you/ your coworker for calling!!
TinyTinasRabidOtter22 points11m ago
If it was specifically requested we could. My favorite regular always got enough lemon loads for his home bound wife for a week. And every week she would send a hand written thank you for all our trouble. She'd tip as well bit it always made my day to see her beautiful handwriting and the smile her husband always had. One of my favorite interactions ever

I’m lazy and clumsy, so I leave it in the bag if they don’t want it warmed. Only one has ever complained about it so I opened it, proceeding to break the pastry accidentally. When they ask why leave it in the package I say it’s more fresh.
Edit: always still put it in the pastry bag
highspeed06 [OP]7 points11m ago
honestly it’d be so much easier if we could, i wouldn’t have to worry about the lemon loaves splitting in half…
i wonder why they don’t make packaging anyway that we can serve in? i’m assuming the answer is because it costs more but it would save baristas trouble and the pastries would say fresher for longer.
Necessary_Low9397 points11m ago
Yeah I wish they did. Like just slap a Starbucks stickers on the packaging and get rid of pastry bags. Ain’t it great??
highspeed06 [OP]4 points11m ago
we’d still need the bags for warmed items but yeah, it’s not like and of it is fresh anyway? and it would reduce waste from having to give out pastry bags that people are only gonna throw away.
Necessary_Low9395 points11m ago
Warm items of course but it would limit the pastry bags.
new_direction_3 points11m ago
Because for them to be sold, and intended to be sold, in the individual packaging, the packaging would need to meet all of the label standards with ingredients, nutrition information, allergen information, and so on that any other packaged food would require, which would require them to hire someone to design the packaging and pay a whole lot of money to have the packaging printed and produced, and it would be a very expensive undertaking compared to just having us use tongs to put it in a paper bag.
highspeed06 [OP]2 points11m ago
that’s true, i guess there’s a reason i’m not running starbucks lol, the minor inconvenience of dealing with broken pastries is probably not in corporate radar anyway.
Thinking_Emoji14 points11m ago
Canadians keep in mind that it’s illegal to serve food still in the packaging here ❤️
highspeed06 [OP]10 points11m ago
i’m sorry 💔may your iced lemon loaves otherwise be mended
ELISAxiii6 points11m ago
Why is that? Genuinely curious
Thinking_Emoji9 points11m ago
Can’t sell food prepackaged without the ingredients/nutrition info on the packaging
Intelligent-Hunt-9061 points11m ago
Is this at a Starbucks ? Do you guys have a sticker for each item?
lightweight19791 points11m ago
I’m surprised! I’m in Canada and always just get it served in the brown bag but a couple of months ago I ordered a lemon loaf and they gave it to me in the plastic which honestly I didn’t really like but obviously didn’t say anything about it but I was definitely thinking how weird it was as it had never happened before lol
francescugh13 points11m ago
yep, it was an update abt a year ago but you can literally sell sandwiches unwarmed and still in the bag. just whatever to make the customer happy.
highspeed06 [OP]6 points11m ago
are all of our sandwiches fully cooked? I though only the ones in rtd&e were…
francescugh8 points11m ago
they’re precooked.
mypoopoosmelly696 points11m ago
i just leave the lemon loaves in the bag. i get so annoyed from how easily they break!! theyre so sticky and such a hassle to give PROPERLY so id rather just leave it in the bag
shes-got-issues6 points11m ago
I’m not sure, but personally, I always serve the food in the plastic if it’s not getting warmed. I don’t even bother asking the customer. I’m worried I might get in trouble one day, but I’ve been doing this for almost a year and it’s all been good so far haha
highspeed06 [OP]2 points11m ago
I did that at first too!! I was told simply not to do that, I assumed it was because of quality assurance or something. that’s why i told the lady we weren’t allowed to serve food in the plastic.
sero50745 points11m ago
tbh i always left unwarmed food in the plastic and put it in a pastry bag cuz our store was such high volume and no one ever complained or corrected me 👍
somewheredaydreaming4 points11m ago
Make the moment right. When coming to a question, always do this.
highspeed06 [OP]5 points11m ago
totally, only reason i didn’t end up giving it to her in the wrap was because the shift had already taken it out because he didn’t know if we were allowed to do that.
mandylee_283 points11m ago
I usually do it by request.
Kaluskydrak3 points11m ago
If they ask yes, by standard no, it can’t be left in the plastic because there are no ingredients on it to tell you what it is, it was meant to be taken out
mstuver153 points11m ago
From what I understand the reason we have to remove the food from the package is because there isn’t any nutritional info on the package
highspeed06 [OP]1 points11m ago
from what i’ve read this is totally the reason!!! i didn’t even know there were labeling requirements in the US but products sold in packaging have to have calorie, ingredients, weight, product name, etc. I wonder why this just doesn’t apply if we put it in a different bag though? All that information is still on the menus. i’m still of the belief that we should package pastries for individual sale unless the customer wants it warmed though, even if it costs a little more for starbucks’ profit margins.
CyzophyTacos7332 points11m ago
I was told that we weren't allowed to... I guess it's different for each store tho.
I'd ask your store manager.
highspeed06 [OP]3 points11m ago
yeah after reading about labeling requirements i’m getting the feeling again that it actually isn’t allowed, even if everyone says it is… i’m definitely gonna talk to my manager next time i see her.
CyzophyTacos7331 points11m ago
Ye
broadwaybraby2 points11m ago
we do it all the time!
kennsnaps2 points11m ago
If they request it we do it at my store. As long as it's not something that requires being warmed before serving (egg bites, certain sandwiches they're saving for later.)
Chondodo2 points11m ago
Only when specifically requested. If they say they don’t care, take it out of the plastic.
uwumoment2 points11m ago
we do but at my store we take off the sticker from when it was pulled
highspeed06 [OP]1 points11m ago
i can understand that, those stickers are kinda annoying tbh
vg_14951 points11m ago
I’ve had plenty of costumers ask for in the wrapper and we do it, who knows 🤷♀️
Joranaxis1 points11m ago
For most managers I’ve worked under in the package is fine for pastries but a hard no for warming items. We cant do frozen sammies because we dont want to be liable if custies incorrectly warm them and make themself sick but if they want a loaf for their tomorrow morning breakfast and want it to stay fresh til then, why the hell not. Make every moment right :)
Evanescent_Enigma1 points11m ago
It would make sense that you could do it by request, but at my store we aren't allowed to give it to them in plastic even if they fall to their knees and beg.
Fozzybean1 points11m ago
We can’t take the lemon loaf out without the icing staying in the package anyway.
highspeed06 [OP]1 points11m ago
RIGHT!! at the very least that one deserves individual packaging it’s impossible to get out of the plastic without absolutely ruining it
DifferenceUnhappy8151 points11m ago
There is a store near me that has the lime frosted coconut bar and they always give to me in the plastic wrap.
Intelligent-Hunt-9061 points11m ago
Standard: No Per Manager (differentiates): No /Yes Starbucks Policy: “Make the moment right!”
Inevitable_Emu_2211 points11m ago
I leave the lemon loafs and lime bars (which should be refrigerated like the cranberry bliss bars, just saying) in the packaging. I don’t have time to mess with frosting and hoping to not smash the pastries. Always put them in a pastry bag still.
Zealousideal-Star4481 points11m ago
I give it and actually offer to do it all the time! Especially for things not needed to be warmed up (egg bites etc.) but loafs and croissants can be given no problem.
