Bathroom breaks and IBS(x2)... Do I suck it up or say something?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by trousersquid
TMI maybe but I've two different types of IBS (inflammatory and irritable) and sometimes, I have to take longer bathroom breaks on shift. I don't try to make them any longer than necessary, my body just hates me and trying to make it move faster than it wants to literally makes the problem worse, long term. When it's bad, the most time it'll usually take is 10-15 minutes, but more often closer to 5. (Many are just quick pee breaks, though, it's not like this happens EVERY time I take a bathroom break.)
I've had shift leaders mark down my bathroom break as my 10 and not even tell me until after I ask about my break later, saying "oh you were gone so long I just assumed that was your break" even though I NEVER go on break without a shift telling me to, and always communicate when I'm running to the restroom and find someone to cover before I even ask.
It's happened enough times now that I'm feeling super shitty (no pun intended) about it all and I'm not sure what to do. Do I waste my breaks on bathroom visits simply because my body sucks? Or should I bring this to my SM's attention?
I really don't want to have to tell every single shift leader about my bowel issues. 🙃

Talk to your manager. Get it documented and submitted through Sedgwick I believe. You will have special accommodations whichever that may be best for you.

Talk to your manager for sure. I have Ulcerative Colitis, (irritable bowel disease) and before I was diagnosed I had to RUN off the floor, even in the middle of talking to a customer, 3-5x a shift for 5-10 minutes because I was in extreme pain and couldn’t hold stuff in. All of my shifts were extremely understanding. Don’t have shame in your health issues, ya gotta make it comfortable for yourself.

You need to get accommodations set up.

All these people are telling you to talk to your employer and... Like, they're not wrong, exactly. But talk to your doctor first. Getting reasonable accommodation in the US (unfortunately, for horse shit reasons) is not easy and can result in retaliation by the employer including termination of employment (wrongfully, illegally). You need to talk to your doctor first. Tell them how your employer is behaving and have them prepare the paperwork ahead of time for what you are going to ask (demand) from your employer. It will make it much harder for them to say no, or to fire you. Not *less illegal*, just harder to come up with a plausible justification that won't get torn to shreds in court (and maybe cost you legal fees and lost income).

Tell your manager. They're legally required to accommodate you.
