Customers throwing their cash(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by SortaSketchyNDed
New poster but I work at a Starbucks and I have this same man come in each day and throw wads of one dollar bills at me. Or sometimes, they’re singular dollar bills crumpled up. Does anyone else have this happen? For context on what he gets, he orders the same thing, a tall pike, no cream, no sugar etc.

Whenever that happened to me, I’d just deadpan stare at the customer until they got uncomfortable, picked up the cash, and handed it to me.
Once in a while, they’d do something like point down at the counter or say “here’s the money” and I wouldn’t flinch or look down, just waiting to be handed the money. Usually, peer pressure from the line behind them would make them capitulate, though begrudgingly.

I would do the same thing to people that get to the front of the line and would still be on the phone.
I wouldn't be rude or anything. I would just stand and wait until people demonstrated the minimum of decorum. It was also easy for me to do it as a brown dude working in a super WASPy, high-income area. I just had that "I wish a motherfucker would today on my shift" look of a salty barista. But again, I was always nice, I just looked mean.
I only had to ever do it in the morning, our PM crowd was super different. It was like we had two stores - one for the people that live in little ticky tacky boxes that look the same, and one for people come to Starbucks with their exotic pets on their shoulders.

Lol if u read my reply on this post I threw the bills and coins back to the customer. They look at me like 😒 and I look at them like 🤨 only tourists. If they left money on the table I would do the same.
I hate when they fcken ordering and talking on the phone and I go what and they give me an attitude. Yo u fcken bitch I don’t understand ur dumb order if u talk on the phone. Pick a fcken struggle.

I’ve never had people throw wads at me, but when people put their money on the counter I give their change back to them on the counter and don’t say anything and walk away.

yup!! had two older women come in last week who were arguing to themselves about who was gonna pay & one of them got frustrated so she threw a $20 bill at me 🙃

Tdawwg785 points11m ago
It’s a pet peeve of mine as well for receiving but even more so for doing tills and deposit bags as an SSV

I got caught on the wrong day with no line. This guy threw his cash and it splayed all over the counter. I just looked down, looked back up at him, and said “you wanna try that again?” He turned beet red, picked up the money, and straightened it out before handing it to me. Sometimes you just have to call people out on their bad behavior. Odds are no one else has, therefor the behavior existing.

Crumpled cash is a HUGE pet peeve but also throwing it??? Dude my temper does not go over well with that.

I HATE it when ppl try to defend this shit with excuses like “its normal back home / we do this all the time in xyz” like no you WILL get clocked by the wrong person you keep this up 😭
Necessary_Low9391 points11m ago
Wtf? They throw money back home? These are Italians/French people that threw money. Can anyone here confirm?
Praxlyn1 points11m ago

This is the perfect time to say: YOU ARE IN AMERICA, OK?! LEARN THE MANNERISMS!

Whenever people do this I sweep the money to my side of the counter, but don't cash out just yet, then I prepare their whole order, hand them their stuff and say thank you. Sometimes they take their stuff and leave and I put their change in out tip jar. Sometimes they'll wait for their change in which case you better believe I'm taking my time with picking it up and counting it twice. We keep a 'for here' mug at our pos so I drop their change in there and slide the mug over to them with a "sorry, covid 🤷".
I only do this during closing shifts though lol
pettingneos2 points11m ago
yeahhhhh this happens a lot. honestly not worth the fight to ask for it to be handed to you
Mea-fae_Owl731 points11m ago
This used to be very common place even with credit cards before customer facing readers. I always found it rude
Doggo-01 points11m ago
there’s a regular at my store that pays only in coins. and by coins i mean mostly pennies 😀 i cry every time on DTO for that
Expecto_nihilus1 points11m ago
Wait, is there a hybrid Starbucks strip club concept being tested we don’t know about?

A couple weeks ago, I was at DTR and I handed a man his change and said, “ and here’s you’re change sir, 13 cents. You’re drink will be out shortly.” Customer service smile and voice. As soon as I turn to the screen to get a look over the next cars order. I see out of the corner of my eye this GROWN MAN, throw his change at me! My window was wide open and luckily it just hit the side part the that doesn’t close, as he was sitting in the back seat. I was too stunned to say anything too him and just handed him his drink when it was done. This is the first time I’ve ever had this happen to me and it was during my first week running the shift.

Yeah had a customer do this too. He would always get a pike as well and just throw a $5 at me and walk away. As much as I appreciate the tip… who the fuck does that?
