should i apply? + some general questions :)(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by softluvr
hi guys! 17 year old here, thinking about applying to starbucks. i really want to apply but a lot of people tell me that they dont like hiring people under 18 so do you guys still think i have a shot?
also, this will be my first job so im really hesitant but my teacher worked at starbucks for 10+ years and he heavily recommended it, so i trust his judgement. that being said, how do you personally like working at starbucks? ive read a lot of bad things about working at starbucks lol but tbh i just wanted to hear a few good things to ease my mind.
i know its a really fast paced environment and i am sort of an anxious person so i dont know if ill be a perfect fit but i really want some job experience before i begin university next year. ive researched it thoroughly, like read through basically every cheat sheet ever, stalked sbux subreddits, and looked at their dress code, so im not completely lost, but im really worried about memorising drink recipes. how does that even work? do you guys just read off of a paper or something because it seems impossible to memorize every drink recipe...
and *finally*, a few questions about the interview process:
* is it virtual? (god i hope it isnt) * \-what to wear? (thinking something semi-casual that adheres to the dress code) * what did they ask you? (any key words/phrases i should use?)
anyways i probably sound like an idiot and im so sorry if this was a burden to read but im just really nervous and inexperienced haha. looking forward to reading your answers! :)

1. It depends on the store manager of the store(s) that you're applying to. Mine here in the US was not virtual but ultimately if you are selected for an interview they will let you know how the interview will be performed. 2. I wore a green sweater over a white button up with some black jeans. Dont show up in a suit or anything but try and look decent. 3. They really like when you're passionate about helping people (you should probably know the starbucks motto and play off of that). At my interview they asked me a lot of open ended questions, like "tell me about a time when you were faced with a challenge, helped someone, etc.". My store manager often talks about failed interviews and she says that you have to be able to answer questions, tell a story, etc.
Some other random pieces of info: Leaning the drink recipes will take some time, but you will have around 2.5 weeks of training to get them down. Once you learn how to make the regular version of a drink, everything else will come naturally. For example. once you learn how to make a regular latte, all of the modifications will be easy. You will know how to make a cinnamon dolce latte, vanilla latte, etc. And the environment is fast paced, but that also heavily depends on what shifts you work. If you work mornings, then yes it will be extremely busy (this is usually 4am-11am). Mid shifts I find are sometimes very busy but there is a lot of downtime (11am-4pm). And night shifts are a lot more laid back but are more focused on cleaning, making pars, restocking, etc.

i was 17 when i started just be prepared for chaotic shifts, especially if you work weekends. came to interview in smth nice and in dress code
i have autism& anxiety so like i said can be very chaotic especially while you’re adapting to the chaos and being close to people and loud blenders and with the headset and everything so i’d be prepared for getting used to a lot of noise. might just be extra sensitive tho due to the tism
i get ab 27hrs a week, and im not in school anymore but i easily would be able to get about 25 with school
best of luck!

i’m 17f and i LOVE working here. seriously, if i would want to come in without being paid just bc it’s literallt fun to do. of course, lots of people are unlucky and get bad coworkers, but the type of people that work at starbucks are generally very chill funny (mostly) young people - who are easy to get along with. i’ve put in my two weeks because going into 12th grade requires my full attention, but im seriously sad to be leaving :(

im like the complete opposite because im going into 12th too but like i want a job so idk if that'll backfire but thanks sm for your answer!

i'm 17 and have been working here for 10 months! personally i think its a good fit- i can get shifts that work with my school schedule and still get 20 hrs a week. i have an anxiety disorder and work at a very high volume store. it can be pretty overwhelming at times (very loud, crowded, a lot going on a once) but tbh you just get used to it eventually.
i could make all the drinks in my sleep at this point, it just becomes muscle memory with enough practice. in the beginning its hard to remember but you can always ask another barista for help or review the beverages guide under store resources on the tablet. itll have step by step recipes for all drinks on the menu!
1. mine wasn't. i guess its possible but ive never heard of that happening before 2. buisness casual, so like blouse and some kaki pants or nice black jeans 3. talk about how you like meeting new ppl and getting to know them, say that your fav customers service experiences (at sbux and otherwise) were when the workers were friendly and had a conversation with you.
edit: sorry about the deleted comment i posted a keysmash by accident lol

the main thing thats stopping me is my anxiety too tbh im very high functioning but idk how ill react to an environment like that so im overall just very nervous but tysm for the answer!

1. mine wasn’t, but my coworkers hired during the pandemic did have virtual interviews. this will likely vary by store but i would hope it’s in person 2. my manager told me to come before my shift at a fast food place next door (I told her I would leave that place for sbux) so I interviewed fully in uniform for another job LMFAOOO. i would dress business casual! 3. google “starbucks interview questions”, all of the questions I were asked were on there. they like hearing anecdotes and unique traits of yours so focus on that!!
as a 17 yr old barista who has been w sbux for a year it is honestly a good starter job, especially if you’re at a smaller store. get as much training in as possible bc you will need it!!! best of luck :)
