This has happened to me 3 times and I'll almost always do the book. One time in particular, my Manger did question it. I took a photo of the store on the day the shift is late and I sent her the photo with its date,time,and location information. It's saved my butt since my then shift tried to say me and my other opener, were late and she didn't have anyone to go in with her.
