Pineapple sin 🍍🍍🍍🍍 (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by 00100110100
So we can’t wear perfume because coffee beans are porous and they will absorb the scent, but the pineapple base (which we need to prepare backup in cubies), not only stains but the scent stays in the plastic, nothing I do can get rid of it, I’ve opened a cubie of beans that had pineapple in it previously and I could smell pineapple more than I could smell the beans, so how does perfume ruin the beans but a cubie that’s been tainted with pineapple somehow doesn’t??
lilmissambersue 196 points 11m ago
It also makes the iced coffee taste weird
00100110100 [OP] 103 points 11m ago
Literally any dish it comes into contact with is ruined, then any tea or coffee you try to put in there afterwards, cubies, pitchers, whatever, 😐
dreadheada 68 points 11m ago
my store combated it by making designated pitchers for the pineapple. We don’t make cubes for PA, we just make pitchers, but same idea. Bring it up to someone if you guys don’t already have something in place!
Awkward-for-You 23 points 11m ago
We did the same. Made the decision before launch just because we assumed it’d be just as bad as the kiwi
amaris-ballamira0920 12 points 11m ago
A couple weeks ago we had a lot of customers ordering drinks with pineapple base during that week and one of our tea shakers started to stain :,)

Honestly the smell is foul. It’s even stronger than the kiwi
Buttafly_360 33 points 11m ago
I rather smell that then the Kiwi fr fr😭
Necessary_Low939 8 points 11m ago
True because pineapple smells more pleasant p
Buttafly_360 1 points 11m ago
Yes, the Kiwi one smelled like ASS 🤢
Necessary_Low939 2 points 11m ago

the kiwi smelled like gasoline
5AV1OR 77 points 11m ago
As much as I agree the pineapple is absolutely terrible because of the staining and the smell, I believe corporate doesn’t see this as an issue because it’s not *technically* supposed to be stored in cubes
kakimike17 10 points 11m ago
woah.. i'm relatively new so if it isn't supposed to be in a cube what is it supposed to be stored in??
Mazziic 26 points 11m ago
My store has sooooo many pitchers, we have at least four of each base, and that’s not including lemonade and vanilla sweet scream, do you have just one per base?
kakimike17 3 points 11m ago
we have like 7 i think and we have to use 2 on iced teas and so that leaves 1 for each base, lem, and vsc
5AV1OR 20 points 11m ago
I believe it’s just supposed to be made and stored in the pitchers, I could be wrong and cubes could be standard but I haven’t seen it anywhere
kakimike17 12 points 11m ago
i can't even imagine only having one pitcher of refreshers.. my store goes through a pitcher so fast
5AV1OR 20 points 11m ago
We make multiple pitchers… if you are just using one how often do you clean it?? They should be cleaned each time they are emptied.
saltandseasmoke 5 points 11m ago
Our store uses full-on toddies rather than cubes for mango dragonfruit and strawberry açaí. Pineapple's stayed in pitchers cause it just isn't much of a seller.
Pippy575 4 points 11m ago
My store uses 4-6 pitchers for each refresher, lemonade and vsc, plus another 8 pitchers for iced teas and we still don’t have enough backups for how fast we go through things.
b99__throwaway 4 points 11m ago
but it does that to the pitchers too😭
5AV1OR 3 points 11m ago
Yes yes it does
TheOnesLeftBehind 2 points 11m ago
It stains the pitchers too though
5AV1OR 3 points 11m ago
Yes it does! I never said it didn’t lol
TheOnesLeftBehind 2 points 11m ago
I just love how they didn’t think any part of the drink through. You’d think they’d learn after the kiwi fiasco
5AV1OR 2 points 11m ago
For real it’s like they don’t even test these new releases, like did they never put it in a pitcher? Did they not sample the chicken maple before launching it??
awordaphrase 33 points 11m ago
I swear the entire corporate development team caught covid early on in 2020, and their taste and smell are messed up. The last two years have had some of the most disgusting new drinks ever.
00100110100 [OP] 25 points 11m ago
The most foul drink someone ever ordered that I had to make was a venti passion tango tea lemonade with 2 shots of espresso and whip on top, I was so grossed out that after they left I remade it for everyone on the floor to try and it literally tasted like puke, like when you throw up and you taste puke in your mouth that’s what it was like. When Starbucks came out with the cold brew lemonade I was shook asf, honestly anyone who gets tricked into drinking coffee with lemonade deserves financial compensation for their trauma.
TheOnesLeftBehind 6 points 11m ago
Lemon and cold brew is common in other countries besides US, I believe mostly Asian countries? I’ve tried it made with both concentrated and it was better than then being cut. Very shocking to the palette however
00100110100 [OP] 3 points 11m ago
Fair,
jams1015 17 points 11m ago
Hehe, seeing "cubie" in the written flesh made my day.
purpleelephant77 11 points 11m ago
On the day of launch I was a little nauseous and the smell of a pineapple refresher at 6am sent me over the edge. Upside is I got to go home early but I can’t stand that damn drink.
star_pants 9 points 11m ago
Wait why is it even coming into contact with cubes? It should be made/stored in pitchers. Pick some sacrificial pitchers and go for it
00100110100 [OP] 7 points 11m ago
We sell too much refreshers and we don’t have that many pitchers or the space to keep them, we can fit more cubes than pitchers. Besides, it ruins the pitchers as well that also and up getting used for other things like iced coffee and iced teas

Edit: someone above also said it was only supposed to go in pitchers and never cubes but I looked all over the store resources app and couldn’t find anything about it, the instructions on the carton do say to make it in a 2L pitcher but it doesn’t say that it can’t be stored in cubes, we have to keep it in cubes and refill the pitcher from there because we go through so much and we get so busy we can’t stop to mix up more if we run out, we can store 4 cubes in the fridge + 4 pitchers, a cube can hold 3.5 pitchers worth but we couldn’t fit that many pitchers in the fridge unless we started stacking them or something which feels like risky business, I also don’t think we even have enough pitchers to do that even if we tried
ittybittybakerkitty 9 points 11m ago
Our store has specific cubes, pitchers, and shakers for it
TigerAffectionate659 7 points 11m ago
Bruh you can’t wear perfume because some people are allergic to it and when y’all wear it they get massive migraines. At work they can’t just walk away from you. You gotta be mindful.
badatlife15 6 points 11m ago
I wish my store actually followed this. We have one partner who wears the strongest smelling cologne/body spray. I’ve heard others saying “at least it smells good,” but it drives me nuts. I’ve been trying to keep track of how frequently I end up with headaches when I work with this partner before making a big deal of it.
00100110100 [OP] 3 points 11m ago
Just tell them that coffee absorbs odours lol, tell them all the reasons, 1. People are allergic/get migraines, 2. The smell messes with peoples palate, 3. Coffee beans are porous and absorb odours; it doesn’t have to be “because of you”, that’s not the only issue anyway, and the fact that coffee absorbs odours is one of the reasons it’s not like anybody can “blame” it on a specific partner, ie. “oh well we can’t wear perfume because so-and-so is allergic” (that’s wrong of them but people are assholes), plus sometimes you can feel like a burden asking people to change something “for you”, even if other people don’t mind accommodating you, but don’t worry, there is more than 1 reason not to wear perfume, you should say something to your SM
Electrical_Metal_106 2 points 11m ago
This is part of the dress code policy and should be addressed by the SSV who checks them in.
00100110100 [OP] 5 points 11m ago
Rules can have more than one reason behind them
Minute-General-2090 6 points 11m ago
wait what? no perfume? my co-worker literally comes in either overly smelling like she walked through the perfume department in Macy's or she took a bath in colone.

but agree, that darn pineapple thing stains the crap out of everything.
Potential_External67 6 points 11m ago
I remade a customer's iced coffee from another store today because it tasted like pineapple. We keep our PNR pitchers faaaaar away from our other pitchers after the first time someone used it for iced coffee.
Pixiedusted1321 5 points 11m ago
We have a partner allergic to it 🤷🏼‍♀️ can’t touch anything that has touched or made contact with that refresher base or the inclusions.
emmalllemma 4 points 11m ago
If you have no choice other than to use cubes, maybe use masking tape/ sharpie to label that cube and only use it for the refresher base? Then it won’t be getting used for beans and such
Ok_Investigator4314 4 points 11m ago
we have pineapple only pitchers!
TheOnesLeftBehind 3 points 11m ago
I’ve had so many customers stop ordering teas and iced coffees and ask for things to not be shaken because it sets in so deep that it fucked up everything.
ViAmplify 3 points 11m ago
Honestly at this point we stopped putting them in cubies and instead used designated pitches for the pineapple, and we cleaned out all of our pitchers with a shit ton of urnex
sleepiflwr 3 points 11m ago
aaaand the pineapple drinks are so gross😭 not worth. they need to bring back very berry!!
Nemmin602 3 points 11m ago
We had to set aside a few pitchers to only be used for pineapple. People were complaining that the iced coffee tasted like pineapple.
LovelyLatte 2 points 11m ago
i miss very berry everyday, pineapple is nowhere near the same😭
vwar00 2 points 11m ago
Make lemonade in the cubes to get stains and possibly smell out. The acidity eats it up. Use to do this for kiwi.
Fun-Reference3618 1 points 11m ago
We have labeled pitchers just for pineapple - because it’s soo powerful
ch0nkim0nki 1 points 11m ago
Pineapple literally has 2 different multi-purpose proteases in it—which means it will break down most proteins it comes in contact with. Not a smart move by upper management not providing special separate containers for it cause now all the containers that it comes in contact with are going to be messed up
albinopigsfromspace 1 points 11m ago
We don’t use cubes for backups so I haven’t run into this problem but that makes no sense. It probably ruins the coffee
PauseAccording20 1 points 11m ago
I wear perfume idgaf
bigheftyhooker 1 points 11m ago
Don’t put the pineapple in the same containers as coffee. Use the p touch to label specific pitchers for pineapple
Flat-Whereas3075 0 points 11m ago
Okay! So despite the claims on being able to taste/smell fragrance, vs. coffee, I believe that -This- is the real reason against cologne and fragrances in Starbucks.

Asthmatics and other fragrance-sensitive people.

I am one. Asthmatic to be precise.

Asthma is a serious health condition! If you don’t think it is, then stop reading. You are wrong. You have to breathe to live. You can withstand not breathing for three minutes—and then you die or experience extreme brain damage, depending upon conditions. The key is when and why the lungs themselves stop working!

And, for asthmatics, some chemicals can make the lungs stope working.

For example, I personally cannot handle the ammonia present in off-the-shelf Windex! It isn’t uncommon! Go look! You’ll find that the glass cleaner in many companies is ammonia-free! The one at SBUX certainly is!

As far as the freshets go—let me tell you!! I can avoid a refresher by asking not to be on bar!

I can avoid a refresher by not smelling it! I can stop breathing for 60 seconds! (Asthmatics can often hold their breath! I am SO good at it! It is the difference between me and an ER or hospital visit! You BET that I am gonna try not to do that! In America?! With my insurance?! In THiS economy?!)

Asthmatics often Know what their tiggers ARE, but there is not an exhaustive list! We don’t know -ALL- of our triggers. You can find a new one out of the blue!

So, I cannot avoid 4-8 hours of you sweating a new trigger to the oldies! And sometimes you can be fine at first, but over time you become a life-threatening trigger! And you may not even smell bad—But, suddenly I can’t breathe!

The problem arises because there are so many varied ingredients in perfumes, lotions, conditioners, beauty products, etc.

And ANY OF THEM can be an asthma triggers! Even some of our cleaning SBUX products are triggers! I personally have to avoid our restroom cleaner! I know a whole store that cannot use Kay 5.

Many chemicals and beauty products that tigger asthmatics have strong smells—not all—but statistically MANY of them.

So if you are asked to stop using “strong fragrances,” it is likely that the cause is someone being allergic or reactive to your scent.

Let me be clear.

I avoid a person for as long as I can. I do not want to be the pain in the ass who “can’t breathe!” People in controlling positions don’t always believe it. See: recent history.

But, there comes a time where you have to weigh your job and your physical well-being against someone else “stinking pretty.”

I also worked in a pharmacy that made medication—I can tell you fragrances are often allergenic. They are rarely necessary. We usually aimed for the most neutral binders and liaisons!

This means the item you are using that is causing problems is most likely NOT necessary to your physical well-being. But, if that thing is included in another person’s environment, it can cause severe lung distress!

This means not breathing!
This means not smelling!
This usually means that this person will have to use additional medicine in order to simply EXIST in the same space with you, and they will most likely tax their lungs in an unhealthy manner!

Just so you can smell nice.

If the managerial staff takes you aside based on smell, I promise it isn’t that you necessarily smell bad, but that someone on your staff is having real problems.

Save it for dates and your days off. You may have to do some sleuthing because sometimes multiple fragrances combine.

Finally, I don’t want to work for an SBUX that thinks that you being attractive is worth more than my life and well-being.

Also, PPF smells weird, but we still have 2L pitchers that stink of green apple Jolly Rancher. They’re bad, but not as bad as some designer perfumes that make me huff the inhaler that makes me go home for three consecutive days while my lungs recover.

Do you want to smell pretty, or would you rather have a supportive team member? Your decision and eventual write-up!
00100110100 [OP] 4 points 11m ago
I hope I didn’t come off as making an argument for wearing perfume ?
Flat-Whereas3075 2 points 11m ago
Nah! You’re great!
Sweetness414 -11 points 11m ago
We can’t wear perfume because it effects the palate. It interferes with one’s ability to taste and fully appreciate our product and has nothing to do with the porosity of coffee beans.
Sequential-River 13 points 11m ago
The people who want to fully appreciate coffee will not go to Starbucks.

We're now a dessert store, not a cafe.
00100110100 [OP] 10 points 11m ago
Of course if you’re actively smelling something it messes with your palate, regardless of that coffee beans *are* porous and absorb odours
sirencursedwithrage 5 points 11m ago
this, plus it'll make me sick with migraine and have to go home. stop just take a damn shower and stop worrying about perfume. 🤮
